AFC Telford United (Official) · Our first preseason friendly! We host Shrewsbury Town at The New Bucks Head in July. The words “Telford” and “Friendly” do not sit well with me! It's like the World Cup Final to a few of the Telford Neanderthals.

Just popped on the site between practice sessions here in the Isle of Man. I'm still amazed by the optimisim on here. How do you all cope? Right then best get back to work, roads close shortly The optimism will continue at least until our first friendly, thennaybe till our first league game. It did last season, and look how that played out.

So the pitch could actually be almost square (not quite but almost). Could be 100 yards long x 99 yards wide. Interesting, never knew diamentions could be so close. Not in the efl though 64-75m x100-110m Thought that was rather generous with options.

IFAB Laws of the Game 2023-24 3. Dimensions The touchline must be longer than the goal-line. Length (touchline): minimum 90m (100yds) maximum 120m (130yds) Length (goal-line): minimum 45m (50yds) maximum 90m (100yds) So the pitch could actually be almost square (not quite but almost). Hurst doesn't play entertaining football. We only really hammered one side that whole season, Bristol Rovers. What Hurst does is very effective and competitive football. Disagree, I was throughly entertained most of the 17/18 season, we played some lung busting energetic football, with some real neat elements of play. Our ability to retain possession from throw ins being exemplary that season compared to what came before Hurst, and after as well. I dont think too many would agree with you about it being entertaining tbh. Effective and competitive is a much better description imo. On the whole that is always going to be more succesful than simply being entertaining which we were.

I used to quite like Telford being the relatively friendly non league club down the road. We loaned them younger players. You used to see several town fans at their games when Shrewsbury were away at Gillingham or whatever. Likewise with their FA Trophy Wembley trips and big cup games. I remember it getting a bit rougher. We had bricks and masonry thrown at us on the old terrace of the bucks head in a SSC final. Then Andy Shaw came, Radio Shropshire was taken over by this "two clubs in Shropshire" narrative. It was as brash as it was nonsensical. Shrewsbury at their lowest point for 75 years, Telford spending money they didn't have on players they couldn't afford. I don't think the Lee Carter/plucky AFC thing did it any good when the restarted either. I've only been to Telford as an away fan since. The banner on the bridge wasn't an isolated incident, it was part of an overall change in attitude and relationship between the two clubs. I never thought I'd spend an afternoon glued to the radio supporting Leamington but there you go. If they wanted to imagine and create some sort of rivalry then they got their wish. The fact a player they lost due to going bust scored the penalty that put us back in the league was just beautiful. same player we signed on the basis we didn't play him in the upcoming game against them, we promptly did, and they beat us with Sam Ricketts scoring the winner not sure who had the last laugh really, them or us Allegedly. Came in for some rough treatment that night did Challis. Dont think there is any doubt who had the last laughter though. Then who won a 90 minute game and then what they have suffered for the last 20 years, or us who got back into the FL (however fortuitously) and then stagnated for the last 10 years at a level higher. Know which one I'd take every time.

Ah, the No1 club in Shropshire.
Possibly not the No1 club in Telford these days.

So when I'm settling down for the evening and its getting close to bed time I'm often found listening to some sort of music, trolling through whatever takes my fancy for that night. The ads are annoying (refuse to pay the £10 pm to be ad free) so just about put up with them. But im taken squarely by surprise tonight to see Sean Davies, Labour candidate for Telford telling me why it's time for a change...... Go on, just tell me it's totally a coincidence 😲 What conspiracy are you hinting at here? Ads are of course targeted locally at times, as with almost all media I guess I'm well behind the times on what is available these days. I understand that ads are targeted to whatever area they want to get to but I'm still amazed that the local Labour candidate can target me (and anyone else in the Telford area too no doubt) can get to address his message to us via such means. He wouldnt get the chance if he knocked on my door as it would be closed quicker than it was opened. And I was unlikely to vote on before, now he has tried to get his message across via an ad on my phone he has got less than zero chance of my vote. Bye Sean.

Can totally agree about "stick your Wembley up you're arse".
Think they have lost there more times than we have now.
To think leeds were coasting to 2nd place till about 3 games to go them got hammered 4-0 at lowly QPR to let Ipswich in.

I see Travis Hernes came on as a sub today for Newcastle in Australia against Tottenham. I wonder if we’ll receive a payment for this? I know a number of add ons structured the deal - although it’s technically not a competitive fixture I don’t think I actually went to this game, I have never been to a game where the final score was so clearly pre arranged so there could be penalties, both teams ended up with virtually the reserve teams on the pitch with what appeared to be unlimited substitutions, absolute disgrace, would rather pay to watch Shrewsbury on ifollow than what was dished up by these two " premier " teams Are yes, but dont forget these clubs dont have room to fit in Fa cup replays if they fail first time round to beat the minions like us. Becoming more and more like a circus at the top level.

Must be the first time in years that no side that got promoted from league 1 the previous season didn't come straight back down and no side relegated from the championship the previous season didn't bounce straight up. Good spot, although I always assume Rotherham are either being relegated or promoted every season. Every season, or every other season for sure. Never stuck playing the same teams for very long Rotherham arent.

It will be interesting to see when we get the Birmingham and Wrexham games home and away when the fixture list comes out on 26th June. Odds on one of them will be over Christmas. First game will be away because of the Flower show. Is the thing about not clashing with the flower show an issue now? Understand it back then as we were closer to the Quarry and used the club car park for flower traffic. Is it such an issue now we are stuck out on the by pass?

The most offensive thing in the article was "Shrewsbury Town FC is a professional association football club based in Shropshire, the north of England" CBA to read it, but if that's the standard of it it was 100% the right decision.

I hear we are in for the young Danish winger Havne Hopinhell. Might be out of our price range though Dont tell me, he is a Micky Moore find. Right?

Kalimera from the balcony 🍺 I’ve just passed a digital temperature display. 25 C at 1 am I see we’re linked with your goalie. Marco Moretti. Out of contract players like this will always be linked with us. If he signs for us instead of you……then all the better🍺 The jungle drums are suggesting a £7 K a week deal. This would absolutely smash our top earner. Mullin was on £4.5 K. That has risen to just under £7 K because of promotion, bonuses etc. We’re shopping in Waitrose now. Not Morrisons. Get his name right for god sake.....

27, poor scoring record - why are we looking at him when our philosophy is getting young players to build and sell on ? I'm guessing we will be looking at them too. Just no experience up front assuming Udoh goes. Will need someone with a bit of experience to go with the youngsters. I'm guessing if we go for this bloke it wont break the bank.

Funnily enough my Mate is a Cheltenham Town fan and also helps with transport at the club. He told me that we were interested in the goalkeeper as he had been told about it from someone at the club who monitors social media. I hadn't noticed it myself We could do worse, we could go for an up and coming LOI youngster....... 😉

He's been offered a new deal by his club. But it's a level below where he could be playing. Are even the likes of Crewe above our budget these days?

Was he one of the ones that didn't perform at Wembley? That would make him just our type No goals at all in 2022/23. Yes I noticed that as well. Was he played in a different position I wonder

We are talking to him I've heard from a fairly reliable source. 16 goals last season I think. Guess now Crewe are staying at level 4.

Sadly this is going to happen more and more often. I go on regularly about clubs who are just not big enough to in reality become FL clubs, Morecambe were just one like that only about 10/12 (??) years ago. They get up into the FL and cannot sustain it. They have done well to be there for as long as they have. They have lasted longer than the likes of Sutton and FGR, and will probably be followed back down eventually by the likes of Harrogate, Bromley, Fleetwood.
These clubs dont bring enough into the FL for me.
There are loads of clubs throwing money at getting into the FL but no real support to be able to sustain it long term once the initial enthusiasm wears off. I give you Rushden as a prime example.

I've seen Hells Bells a couple of times. A great tribute band. I had thought Brian Johnson had retired Think he had throat issues a few years back.
