Wow. Another pretty ridiculous target - from needing below 6 an over, which should have been a very do-able run chase to over 7 an over from 26. 7.28 an over isn't much in a normal T20, I guess, but 26 overs? Just doesn't quite seem right to me; have to agree with critics suggesting that DL isn't all that accurate with the way the 50 over game has evolved over the last couple of years. Whilst I agree DL needs modernising, that's a very gettable score in 26 overs. I'd rather be chasing right now. 7.38 an over isn't a HUGE ask. It all depends on our top 4. I agree it's gettable and not as farcical as the previous DL target (it seems to work best if called into play before any overs are played) or the Blast game someone (Northwestman?) said about, but personally think we would have strolled to the existing target. Feel sorry for Jason Roy - he needs a score to boost that average of his, and he gets a T20 game instead. Hales gone. Damn.

While there can be absolutely no blaming this farce on the D/L - it's just the inexperience of this new team showing, and a pretty poor shot from Morgan - it's a real shame that the rain came along. Even if we get a miracle win, it still won't feel quite the same.
Santner does look a decent player, mind. Ian Smith was very positive about him and he's shown flashes with both bat and ball, and of course today we've made him look like Murali.

Also, I'm undecided on Roy. He came in on great form with good pedigree and rave reviews, and obviously he's still young, but he hasn't looked at all ready this series. Both times he made OK scores he was pretty lucky. Heard some pundit saying he should just be given a year or two of opening with Hales and told not to worry about struggling for form in that time, but is being constantly got out cheaply going to be the best for him if he isn't ready?

I just don't think England really adapted to what was needed early on in this run chase. It didn't need to be all gung-ho and Root an Morgan's wickets were very disappointing. It has been the only downside to England's efforts in this series so far.

It has been the only downside to England's efforts in this series so far. Yes, and that's what I meant by the inexperience showing. With 26 overs there's still time to take the first four/five overs for about 5 each and let the openers get their eyes in before they start trying to smash it about. Some respectability being added now, and Bairstow is an interesting one. Thought he kept really well and he has been brilliant this season. Very highly rated at Yorkshire, and although it didn't work out for him in the test side last time, I'm sure he'll get another shot and it'd be interesting to see if that's as well as or instead of Buttler, when the time comes.

96-5 off 15 overs. We need 96 off 66 to win...
30/70 eng-NZ currently imo

If the plan is to replace Buttler with Bairstow if the former isn't fit, what on earth is the point in including Billings in the side in the 1st place? He's not a specialist batsman, yet has been keeping Taylor out of the side. Incidentally, Taylor was given permission to play for Notts against Yorks at Leeds last night, whereas Bairstow was pulled out of the Yorks side. Where is the logic in this, other than it does tend to suggest that, once again, Taylor will be the drinks carrier? Thus it is reasonable to assume that either Buttler or Bairstow will play, with Billings staying at number 7. And why call up the Overtons as cover when neither of them play regularly for Somerset in the white ball game? I do hope you're watching right now...

Good catch, good knock from Billings but we're right on the edge now. Two superb catches taken to dismiss Hales and Billings in this ODI alone - the Kiwis' fielding has to be one of the things we aspire to in an area we need to work heavily on.

Take a bow Bairstow, take a bow the selectors too. Fantastic call not to drop Billings and to bring in the inform Bairstow.

Strange captaincy by McCullum not to bowl Southee earlier. Morgan certainly would have gone for the wickets. Incredibly that's Bairstows 9th ODI in his career. He's played 2 match winning innings under immense pressure in that time too...

Still got the T20 to come, but this Eng/NZ series is ranking right up their as one of my favourites of all time. Everyone playing with a smile on their face, even in the pressure moments. Both teams should be very proud of the spirit these games have been played in!

I do hope Andrew Strauss gets some recognition. He some very tough decisions early on and thus far, at least 1 of them seems to have been the correct one (Moores). We may lose the ashes but I'd rather back these guys right now than bring KP back. Root, Ballance, Stokes, Roy, Hales and Bairstow are the future. There's clearly a very strong team spirit right now, I wonder how much KP's absence has to do with that.

The shot that Roy played was certainly very poor indeed. It's obvious that if we are selecting our best ODI team that Moeen Ali needs to come in for Roy. Gives us another bowling option too. Bairstow has now given the selectors a problem. Where do they fit him into the side? I'd certainly be dropping Stokes down the order though. Another poor shot in the circumstances yesterday to follow that swipe in an earlier game which left us with 4 overs unused in our innings. Someone needs to have a word with him that even in the brave new world of 300+ scores in ODIs that he needs to take into account the state of the innings when making his shot selection. Stokes' record in ODIs isn't that inspiring as yet. Innings - 24 Not out 2 Runs 424 Highest score - 70 Average 19.27. 2 Fifties.

Innings 24 - Not Out 6 - Runs 137 - Highest Score 38* - Average 11.41
I am more disappointed by this record really as I would definitely class Jordan as an all rounder. I do agree however that Stokes does need to show a little more mental capacity in certain situations, his dismissal at Edgbaston stands out for me, out for 10 chopping Boult on jumping in the air trying to carve one over mid wicket with the score on 195-5 off 28 overs, there was still plenty of time to play himself in for a big one and he opts for the big shot early.....then again criticising one dismissal isn't the way of this new England ODI set up and maybe that is a good thing. I thought on the flip side Stokes bowled very well yesterday really.

Stokes' record in ODIs isn't that inspiring as yet. Innings - 24 Not out 2 Runs 424 Highest score - 70 Average 19.27. 2 Fifties. I think you're right. I like the idea of Roy but I think he needs to establish himself as an international in the T20 side - his strongest format - before he gets expected to open in ODIs too. I do see him as a future test player, but he really hasn't looked ready. Bairstow's knock was outstanding and the culmination of a lot of hard work and a very very good season at Yorkshire. He's always had the talent, but his previous international failings have seen him sidelined for a while and what a way to return. It may seem reactionary, but he has to slot in the side somewhere. Billings did well yesterday, an absolutely pivotal knock, but I think Stokes could play his role as the aggressor down at 7. I don't really think his ODI average is that meaningful - he spent most of it as a number 8, I think, and under the old regime and while he was in his "phonebook" rut in all formats. He's evidently got a lot of learning still to do and Jos Buttler would be a very good bloke to teach him about playing the game situation a bit better, but he's done OK this series and I assume his average is about 25/30 - and the high SR is absolutely crucial in the way we play. We certainly have a nice dilemma coming up, though. Taylor has a great List A record (startlingly similar to Gary Ballance, whose ODI career so far has been a disaster) and will probably have to deal with being first reserve given the success we've had this series; Billings, Bairstow and Buttler can't all fit in the same team (not least because we'd run out of Bs to put on the back of the shirts) when we also have three and four nailed on and 8-11 all being bowlers with Stokes needing to be fitted in there somewhere. Unless we ask Moeen to bowl 10 overs every ODI (although his record is much better with the white ball than red) and also expect that from Stokes, Rashid et al. There's also Woakes waiting in the wings, Reece Topley hoping to break through after making the T20 squad (incidentally, how can you have a batting average below 3?!) and Jordan and Plunkett to come back. I'd perhaps like to see Wood primarily used for Tests due to his fitness issues, so that could create a hole somewhere. Anyway, it's been a fantastic series and the Kiwis have been absolutely great to watch and brilliant sports throughout. Very, very pleased with where we're going and I look forward to seeing how this team develops ahead of 2019.

Yes. Billings can consider himself to be most unfortunate, but I suspect that it will be his place that Bairstow will take in the next ODIs against the Aussies.

After an initial slow start his last 2 innings were very promising. Good thing is we've got some great options. Jordan, plunkett, broad (questionable), Taylor, Ali, Bopara, Wright and Samit Patel are all great options to have waiting in the wings...

Perhaps Roy, and move up Buttler to open? Personally, I'd prefer Ali to open with Hales.
