In can understand folk not been blown away by this one, but there are some drama queens on here! The negatives, would be his age (I'd like to see some younger rough diamonds, like Grandison when he first signed, but that may yet happen) and why a two year deal? On the plus side he's probably not on a huge wage and the Luton fans are not as dismissive as some make out. Comments on their forum include "the lad has talent and MM will get the best out of him", "he's a better player than many on here think", " I've always thought there was a hell of a player in there", "top player with true ability". The concensus is not that he's a rubbish player but that Luton/Whalley has failed to fulfill his clear potential during the time at their club. A signing that could go either way (hence why 2/yr deal compared to Manganese lat yr?)but remember he replaces the combined contributions of Vincent and Robinson... well if he blows hot and cold over the season and is only 50% effective then that must be about ten times what they gave overall. It will all depend on training, who he plays alongside and the formation. MM knows more about it than us, I guess they will have prior knowledge of him too. Hopefully this works out well if he does sign.

I think fans are over reacting, and rightly so, because we've all been and experienced this before. The signings have been very much in the turner mold. I'm not doubting MM but I can understand people's reaction on here, because none of us want a repeat of two seasons ago!

The guy clearly possesses pace and trickery judging by the way he ran us ragged at Luton. If we are going 5-3-2 then he could be very useful coming off the bench if we are struggling.
There were a number of occasions last season when we were chasing games against the better teams away from home where we lacked the pace or width to get around well-marshalled defences. The answer most of the time seemed to be to throw on another striker and hope for the best. At least now we have an added option if we need to change things.

I see that in the meantime Bury have made 2 decent signings, first defender Peter Clarke and now striker Leon Clarke.
As for the signing of Shaun Wally (should it go through)the only thing I would question is the length of the contract, instead of the comfort of a 2 year contract why not offer him a short contract of say 6 months for him to prove that he has got what it takes to play at league 1?

Williams and Mellon will no doubt have given each signing a lot of thought and are doing what they feel best for the club, to see their efforts doubted and in some cases ridiculed before a ball has been kicked is stupid. This man may be a complete success or a flop as is the case with every signing for every club in the league.

Reading some of the comments here, I have concluded that he is pretty likely to end up as player of the season next year

I think it's perfectly acceptable to question a signing like this. We are constantly being told that we will only be signing players that will be an improvement on what we have already got so scrutiny is to be expected. He's a guy that's reached the most important part of his career with very little to show in league football. After 2 years at Luton their staff (y'know the ones that have actually watched him train and play for their club) have decided to release him. Their fans, with no exception, think he's far from good enough for this level. Yeah, fans always react in that sort of way when a player goes but not normally quite so united without compliment. Though they do seem to think he has an exceptional game in him from time to time and maybe that's what Mellon thinks he can get out of him consistently. Now Whalley has to come here and prove everyone wrong and won't they all be happy if he does? Doesn't mean the signing isn't questionable though. But if he's an improvement on Vincent when given the chance then I suppose the 'better than we have already got' box will be ticked. Good luck Shaun Whalley. Of course we might scrutinise, although being "underwhelmed" every time we sign a player (which I think has been the message from some commenting on every signing so far) isn't what I'd call scrutiny, more like off the cuff remarks based on not very much evidence. Sure, Luton's staff have released him. So what? Our guys have seen something they think he can do in the context of our squad and our position, not theirs. I'll back their judgment until they get too many wrong. I'll certainly back it over mine or anyone else's on B&A at this stage. Luton fans "without exception" think he isn't good enough? Come off it. You mean those few Luton fans who could be bothered to post on the topic. It might be everyone from a very tiny, self-selected sample but, as you say, it's rare when a player moves on and that doesn't happen to some extent, so I'd always take such remarks with a pinch of salt. I recall Bury fans saying Marc Pugh wasn't much good when we signed him, as did I and many others when he left us - what did we know!? I don't think Whalley has to prove anyone wrong. Yes, he has to prove himself here but so does everyone we sign. Not sure how much we'll see of him anyway, unless we're changing the way we play. I'd expect him to be an option in reserve for us to do something different but who knows? The key thing for me is that he starts on a level with every signing we make, not some way behind having to win over a bunch of people who, for whatever reason, have already decided he's not good enough. Good luck to him, I'm with you on that!

I see that in the meantime Bury have made 2 decent signings, first defender Peter Clarke and now striker Leon Clarke. I wonder what the reaction on here might have been had we signed a 33 year old centre back from Blackpool? Not to mention a 30 year old "bad boy" striker who's just endured a dismal return to Wolves and no doubt still commands a big slice of the playing budget?

Bury are rumoured to be after Tom Pope who turns 30 this August. They can then add him to El Abd (30) McNulty (30) P. Clarke (33) Nardiello (32) L. Clarke (30) and Lowe (36). Not much re-sale value there then. By the way, what's the current situation with regard to Bury putting up their ground as collateral against loans made by their Chairman? I can hear the rattle of buckets! In the meantime, feel free to invest £10,000 of your hard earned money in a Bury F.C. Car Park space. www.burytimes.co.uk/news/11496724.Bury_FC_car_park_spaces_to_rent_at__10_000_each/

Interesting comments from Matt Williams in todays Star, I assume a bit of a response to some of the comments online
"Yes, we’d all love to sign Cristiano Ronaldo but we have to trust the manager with what he’s doing – and I must point out that the charges he was linked to have been dropped"

Everyone is entitled to their opinion of course but I do wonder who a lot of fans think we should be signing. I'm not privy to the budget or the conversations held between MM/MW and prospective players but I would assume the, as with last year, they have done their research on them. Some of the comments on here basically showing a lack of respect for MM and MW and their judgement and thinking they are complete mugs. Bizarre to say the least

Haven't seen Mr Whalley play enough to make a judgement. From what I've seen he's got the potential there, and MM evidently thinks that he can get the best out of him more effectively than some of his previous clubs. That'll do for me.

To be fair there's no wonder a few fans are s**tting themselves about the step up after our experience last time. I really do think we are much better equipped this time though and the mood in the camp is a lot better too. Even if we do lose a couple of players here n there...

B & A members voted unanimously that based on never having seen Mr Whalley play but having studied Wikipedia at length it was clear that this signing would be a DNA failure............. All future targets set out by the MM / MW and future STFC managers, CEO etc to be run by the Supporters Parliament and social media - with no insight into budget, contracts and players wage demands.

Shaun Whalley who played for Telford last season...hardly seems an inspired start to transfer dealings. Good job its not the start then............woods and sadler!
Here we go again, "He's s**t cos he played non-league" - so did Mangan who was also branded a "Trouble Maker".
Give the lad a chance! FFS.
