Interested to see how often Morgan Feeney got into their penalty area, and to the byline for getting crosses in. I think he also won the penalty? He posed quite a threat going forward.

The crosses were coming in from the opposite side to benning, yes I agree pilch, but benning wasn't marking up,or tight enough to his marker....same happened with there 2nd goal yesterday....cross comes in to far post..the lad taps it in...benning nowhere near him....that's what I saw anyway 🤷 2nd goal was not Bennings fault. Rossiter pushed up to press but the front 3 didnt press so it meant all 4 of them were within 10 foot of each other and taken out of the game with a simple pass. Meaning Fenney (who was playing LCB) had to push out of defence to close down the midfielder who had acres of space leaving a big hole in the defence that Benning had to fill which left a man at the back post free to put away a pinpoint cross. If anyone is at fault it is Rossiter for leaving his position, the whole defence for being too deep when the midfield pressed or the strikers for not closing down when they should have. Extended highlights 4.26 if you want to see what I mean.

Same team again Thursday.
I might be in the minority but right now I’d keep Winchester on the bench, he hasn’t been at it yet this season.
A fit Rossiter is our best holding midefielder and it’s between Ojo and Winchester for the other slot.
Id also like to see TOR start in the whole behind the strikers but looking very unlikely right now.
Confident we can get another result Thursday

I agree. Winnie has been lots of puff but not much end product this season.

Yes - it was nice to see Morgan getting forward a bit but it was Marquis who was pulled down for the penalty - quite brainless from their defender.

I was concerned that we would be down to 10 given the number of yellows being given, Marquis was clearly up for it and frustrated at the fouls he either didn’t get or was pulled up for. There was one corner where their player was so obviously pulling his shirt it was hard to believe the ref never saw it.

Rossiter is indeed very good and will be an asset for this season if he stays fit - a huge if though.
Lloyd deserves credit for already scoring more goals than all of last season.
Hopefully we’ll play with confidence on Thurs but since PH’s return we’ve definitely been more of an away team than home one. And also can we do it against 11 men and against a team that’s had a decent start, we’ll see

We have moaned about poor ref decisions going against us...but having watched back the extended highlights:
1. I think most refs would blow for Toto's goal as he was on top of the defender.
2. The red card, i think neither foul is a yellow. Maybe both would constitute a yellow if he was unlucky.
3. Our pen was soft.
Good to see decisions going our way for once! And they were pivotal in affecting the outcome of the game, just like the poor decisions against us in earlier games.
Have we used up all our luck already? Hope not! I recon we have a good damn chance against Exeter now. I expect they will be cursing how both our strikers' are scoring, and at how we have finally found a formation that works.

Floreat Salopia I think toto said himself post match that he wondered if the goal would stand. Personally I think its great attacking play but yes i see why it could have been disallowed. Marquis was canny for his foul but it did look like a pen. Rossiter keeps his place ahead of Winchester for me.

I would agreed about point 1 point 2, persistent fouling often leads to a yellow even if the actual foul is not necessary a “yellow card” offence, once on one they know the ref is watching maybe even waiting. 3, thought it was a pen all day long.

It has to be one of Ojo or Rossiter for me. Otherwise we are too defensive. Unless we spend training this week getting one of them to push forward. That starting 11 has Benning and Castledine to create goals otherwise it's just hit and hope with a lot of running.

Lloyd and Marquis with 2 a piece, would hope that their tales are up.
Some of the off the ball running from Lloyd was great.

Lloyd's workrate is much more effective with Marquis occupying a defender or two

Stonewall penalty for me, defender has both arms around him for a time. He does go down fairly easily but that's just modern football but a penalty every time for me.

To be fair Toto didn't seem to be the problem today but was watching from a dodgy feed. Must be the first game that he has not done anything stupid in defence. All credit to him for the goal,he showed a lot of determination to get that header.

Reading between the lines of Hurst post match interview suggests to me TOR is firmly on the naughty step and doesn't look like moving any time soon. There was also a hint that Marquis was one of the players having a sulk. I think TOR will get his chance once Hurst has made his point about who’s in charge. It will be up to the player to earn his place. He won’t do himself any favours in long run as it will get back to Villa if he has a poor attitude. If he has a poor attitude than it needs dealing with, it also needs to be reported back to his club. I don't agree with Hurst making comments about players sulking to the press, whoever that player may be. I know he has been out due to a groin strain . Whilst Hurst has to show his authority as there can only be one boss, if he is now fully fit and Hurst is just keeping out of the first team and bench to just make a point, then that is stupid and short sighted as we need him playing well as he did have an impact as he has pace and a few tricks. We also need to have a good relationship with the club that let him come to us on loan.so we can have more loan players in the future.

I do agree that having two of Winchester, Ojo and Rossiter could be seen to be too defensive, particuarly if we are playing 5 at the back, although i can't get on board with the idea that Benning is one our creative options! Assuming we play with 3 central midfields I'd ideally prefer one of Rositter, Ojo and Winchester to sit with Castledine and TOR ahead of them. However I do appreciate that is putting a bit onus on that one defensive midfielder and therefore I suspect it will always be one of TOR and Leo. If we go back to 17/18 in the middle 3 we had a nice balance of ballwinner (Ogogo), box to box (Godfrey) and playmaker (Nolan). We have plenty of midfielders but I'm not sure who the best 3 are to give us the best balance, I've realised that I've omitted Shipley from the discussion so that's another option too.

Mr Hurst in his post match interview made some interesting comments.
In particular regarding Mr Winchester not being picked to start at Crawley. Mr Hurst explained the position to the player and his response was a positive acceptance, to which Mr Hurst highlighted that the player was a 'proper pro' in terms of his attitude and inferred that there were not as many players with that attitude in the modern game - make of that what you wish but clearly something is niggling our leader about a player (s).
I can remember he didn't tolerate a young Dan James who came to us in Mr Hursts first spell and was sent packing back to Swansea - this was probably the kick up the backside that the player needed as his career took off over the next 18 months.
There is no doubt that our manager has a good record with loan players previously such as Godfrey, Henderson, Morris etc who learnt a great deal from their year at the Meadow and went onto greater things. If in deed the young lad from Villa has an issue with not being picked (and we are all guessing about this) he needs to look at how others have prospered under Mr Hurst.

I've no doubt that players who come on loan have some contact with the staff of the club they are loaned from and Hurst and our coaching staff will have some contact with the loaning club too. So if there is a problem with the player the loaning club will be aware of it by now.

Disagree has to be the 2002/03 defence which took us down to the Conference, did we concede 90 odd league goals that season? I’ve checked using three different calculators, and I can confirm 2002/03 was definitely more than a decade ago. Case closed. "Worst defence in a decade plus" is more than 10 years case re-opened..... Take a holiday CI Swann

Has anyone else viewed those social media clips pre match, where some guy stands behind the camera and the squad fist bumps / shake hands as they go past. Everyone gets involved even Hurst and Doig except Marquis who rolls in near the end and doesn't acknowledges the camera. I've wondered whether it's an in joke with the squad but he looks like a difficult character to get anything out of.

Toto looked like he was back to his old self at Crawley. The back 3 works better if anything it was Josh Feeney who was struggling with things there.
Hoole and Pierre may not even get on the bench now let alone the XI.

Regarding rossiter,I would play him further forward, he's one player that can pass a ball,no arguments about that.where was his position at other clubs, further forward,or defensive midfielder?
