We'll no because if you don't replace the ball in football no one can play? I'm not knocking cyclists as they seem as hard as nails and do suffer some horrific injuries but surely keeping you bike working correctly should be an important part of the competition and if it goes wrong you should be penalised in some way? So you think that a rider with about 2 miles to go, having ridden for over 160 miles and has a 1.5 minute lead shouldn’t be allowed to finish because of having the misfortune to get a puncture? I can understand that would be frustrating for the rider but isn't that all part of the event? Sometimes in sport its the unexpected element which contributes to the result. The GB BMX rider missed out on a medal last night after the start was held slightly longer than normal affected her start, which must have been gutting but all part of the rider/bike set up needing to work together to get the win Not saying that it should put them out of the race all together but maybe just not have such an immidiate ability to hope on another bike but to take some time penalty while its replaced.

It will be a bike sized to the riders requirements. I wonder if there is an argument for not having subs in football, seems unfair being able to replace players who aren’t even injured 😀 To answer Matt, there is a time penalty. He had to wait for the spare and you could see the stress it caused.

The engineer (if that the right term) did a great job getting him the new bike, think they said he only lost 15 seconds which is very impressive work. Perhaps I'm being overly critical it just seems a bit too easy to have a whole new set up ready to go is needed. I like sport with a bit of harsh reality to it where a whole 4 years work can get undone by a stray stone in the road leaving the competitor sobbing at the side of the road.

I think deep down we both just wanted to see the guy pick the bike up and try and sprint towards the line with it on his back with the pack slowly catching him but still wanted him just to get there first ;-)

Last leg of the 4 x 400m relay by the Dutch women was amazing to watch. Don't know how it came over on the TV but in the stadium you could see it happening as she went into the last bend

I love track and field events and watch the Diamond League on tv as often as I can . Femke Bol is superb and it was no surprise to me to see her charge over the last 150 or so . An outstanding athlete. Don’t like to hear her being interviewed though as she has rather a high pitched voice . Lyles is the complete showman and didn’t look favourite for the 100 ‘s after his performances in the heats but took the title just in a thrilling race .What a character . Onward we go with chances in the 800 and 1500 and relays for a few more medals hopefully . Interesting to know that our female swimmers failed to get on the podium this time 😳

Keely Hodgkinson supreme!
And Duplantis in the pole vault was phenomenal!!

I think I heard right. Mondo Duplantis has got a deal with his shoe sponsor . He gets rewarded every time he breaks his own World record in the pole vault. The commentators suggested he could do this any time he wanted , I think he’s broken his own record 8 times? So , when it suits him and when he feels on form he adds a few more centimetres to the height of the bar and pops over , easy . What an athlete absolutely superb , and what a thrill to actually be in the stadium to see him break his record .
By the way,Keeley Hodgkinson was superb in winning the 800 m , so pleased for her to win a gold medal after so many silver medal finishes .

Have to say, I was a tad concerned the way they were building up Hodgkinson's race but thankfully everything went to plan, needn't had worried. A superb performance and more to come. And what can you say about Mondo, the guy is on another planet. So glad to have caught all that. And nice of him to pay homage to the true star of these Olympics too. I mean Mondo is cool but he's not quite Dikec cool...

I wonder how long Bolt’s record will remain ? There is the old argument - what is the limit of an athletes performance in the various disciplines . I wonder .

Bubka used to raise his world record 1 centimetre at a time to earn the maximum from his sponsor.
Also I’m not convinced that the athletes are better but the technology, nutrition and training methods are.

Superb stuff by Hodgkinson - GB athletics needed that. Talking of world records - that's the longest standing - since 1983. Hope Kerr can grab another gold tonight - would be nice to beat Ingebrigtsen again.

Also now they fact they are professionals makes a massive difference as don't have to have a job on top of training. I hadn't realised David Wilkie retired at such a young age due to financial constraints

It looks as though Team GB will be close to matching the results from Tokyo, with at least half a dozen Gold medals within reach for our athletes.
I haven't watched much of the Games to be honest and though the BBC have done their best the terrestrial coverage has been pushed out by IOC handing the coverage to Discovery+. It's a shame because during London 2012 many millions of people across the world were inspired to take up sports. The reduction of coverage this time around is going to result in fewer people following suit.

I mesmerized by the pistol shooting, the level of concentration was out of this world, I thought Kim yeji having her daughter's toy elephant with her to remind her if her five year old daughter was rather touching, she also was very sporting when she got silver whilst the other Korean shooter got gold.

I see the he/she from Algeria predictably won the boxing gold medal.
One of these days some poor girl is going to get killed because of this woke ideology.
Domestic Violence as an Olympic sport and public entertainment............. who'd have thought?
