Hoping all those athletes standing in the rain listening to boring speeches don’t catch colds.

Very hit and miss for me. Felt for them with the weather, mind. Typical that it buckets down just when you don't need it. Highlights were the athletes of course, that's always the highlight. As were the smiles of each and every person given the task of carrying the torch. Saint-Cirel singing La Marseillaise was a great performance but I just felt that would have been better in the closed environment of a stadium (on TV at least it just seemed to get lost in the expanse). And whilst I am no fan and have absolutely no idea what she was singing I thought Celine Dion stole the show at the end, that was a superb performance. Other than that thought it dragged on at times and was a bit disjointed. Not entirely sure what Papa Smurf was about. Lets hope the weather improves and hopefully no more incidents looking to disrupt things. Fingers crossed. Big fan of the hockey and we have GB versus Spain this morning to get things started...👍

I thought that horse thing galloping along on the Seine was brilliant. Carl Lewis and his other brave souls on that small boat looked quite p**sed off . On the verge of hearing the first “. Man overboard”:shout but he managed to hang on . I also thought there was a good chance of seeing someone puking over the side . Lewis, Nadal and the others were waving to the crowds supposedly but I couldn’t see anyone , perhaps they were summoning help “ get me off this bloody boat for Gods sake “. All in all a good night viewing if only for the comedy effect . Finally, why have a 100 year old man sit in a wheelchair in the pouring rain just to have a brief grasp of the Olympic flame . That was particularly cruel particularly as he couldn’t move his wheelchair cos it was on wet cobbles. Elderly abuse at its finest , I expect to hear someone’s been arrested .
Looking forward to the games , can’t wait for track and field .

When you think of things like the Queen "parachuting" into our ceremony, this really didn't cut the mustard did it?
Of course, they don't have the benefit of a monarchy due to Government "cuts"

Those of you who follow cycling will have seen Josh Tarling denied a medal by a puncture in Saturday’s Time Trial, he was 4th by a couple of seconds and the wheel change took at least 10 seconds.
Chapeau to Anna Henderson who got an unexpected silver in the women’s event.
It looked liked history would repeat itself earlier when Tom Pidcock punctured while leading the men’s cross country but he came back through the field for an awesome win. Booed by the classy French crowd, their man was second.

The booing was unfortunate but I wouldn't make too much of it. The French guy had led for so long and looked big and strong enough to take a sprint finish, the race was neck and neck but suddenly Pidcock came into the home straight on his own and the crowd can't really have known what had happened. I think they were probably shocked as much as anything. It sounded more like disbelief with some booing thrown in - not sure any home crowd would have reacted much differently. Best to focus on the incredible athleticism and bike handling skills of Tom Pidcock.

They are great for normal riding but are so much heavier than flimsy racing tyres and at that level it would make a huge disadvantage to use them. Wheels and tyres (rotating items) is the best place to save weight for maximum advantage. Punctures happen, but even with modern very lightweight tyres it's not that often. Just unfortunate when it's at times like this.

I see the Romanians have done well in the first few days.
They have taken gold, silver, bronze, copper and lead so far.

Punctures nevertheless soften the tyre and reduce speed and handling ability, so they have to be changed. I presume road racers still use inner tubes?

A lot of top end racers are now racing on tubeless tyres. Dont ask me about them as I'm still using inner tubes, the odd puncture is of little consequence to me at my level of riding except being a small inconvenience.

I’m ignorant on the subject of pro cyclist tyres, but I ride tubeless with tyres filled with expandable sealant that activates when a tyre is punctured to seal small holes.
Pro’s being weight weenies I doubt whether they would use any form of sealant.
These people almost live on their bikes and will be very sensitive to a change in tyre pressure which they will have spent their careers optimising.
