Have we ever officially started a pre season regimen with just 12 contracted players?
Even waiting on loan movement must say the lack of numbers at this stage entering July is pretty uncharted territory.

Would imagine if they had player/players in on trial they wouldn’t want to have them filmed with the squad!

In the unlikely event of both Udoh & Price signing, I’d say we’d have the beginnings of a half-decent squad!

Even waiting on loan movement must say the lack of numbers at this stage entering July is pretty uncharted territory. That got me thinking about 2014/15 (my favourite Salop-supporting season), when Micky Mellon resurrected us from the despair of relegation with an immediate promotion. Wikipedia says we were left with 6 players after relegation (Burton, Grandison, Goldson, Smith, Woods & Wildig) - I thought it was even less but it was certainly a very junior core group. By the end of June, we'd signed 10 players (Vincent, Knight-Percival & Ellis in May, Demetriou, Collins, Halstead, Wesolowski, Leutwiler, Vernon & Caton in June). The latest of those was signed on 18 June. That's a squad of 16 to start pre-season training (& 3 of them were goalkeepers). In July we signed 6 more (Akpa Akpro, Lawrence, Gayle, Clark, Robinson & Mangan). We added Griffith in August and Barnett in February. No loanees arrived before October (Grant & Grimmer). We played our first friendly on 12 July (beat Chesterfield 2-0), by which time there were 19 in the squad, although a trialist (Curran) scored for us too. I looked at that season because I remember us being in a desperate state after relegation and it was fantastic how we turned it around immediately. If we only have 12 players now, that's 75% of the numbers that began pre-season back then. If we sign 6 more players this month, as we did then, we'll still only be at 18. Seems like there's an awful lot of work to be done - and no money with which to do it. First friendly is a week on Saturday.

The training ground must feel quite eerie and depressing at the moment. We seem so far behind where we should be, not that I’m surprised.

I’d imagine it’s a real struggle trying to attract players with our shoestring budget. Time for change at the top and some real investment.

Unsure what the squad size of some of the similar team in the division are right now.
The loanees from Bigger clubs won't start moving until after the Euros.

Sure this thread will start to get busy very shortly.
Though I'm sure PH will probably put a youngster or two on the bench for many of our games with the intention of giving them a few minutes towards the end of games if its sensible to do. At least I hope he will in our current situation.

Having a quick glance at the likes of Cambridge, Northampton and Bristol Rovers all have at least 16 pros on the books, so we are quite far behind imo.

Even looking at the signings made to date, it’s going to be an old squad.

Just had a quick look at the list of players on the website, all the players have an updated photo in the new kit/training kit except for 3 players whose photos are taken from last season (Udoh, Price & Idowu).

Well he is now at the point where he wont be earning money at all now his contract with us has finished. Guess he still hasnt had an offer that he/his agent feels is good enough as he hasnt yet signed for anyone else. A decent striker would surely have had clubs falling over themselves for him and he would have signed for them by now. Maybe our offer is somewhere near to the best he has had and he is still thinking things over. But it's time for him to decide on the next couple of days. Missing 1 months pay at £8-10k per month won’t make any difference if he signs a new deal at £15-20 per month for 2-3 years. Sadly I think his silence speaks volumes 👍🏻 Don't think anyone will be paying him £20k a month!!

I would be more disappointed if we didn't sign Jack Price than Dan because he does want to play for us.

Would rather Udoh than Price personally. I can't see Price being justified over the course of the season but happy to be proven wrong.

If he was likely to be fit enough to play most of the games over a season he would be a Town player by now. The fact he isnt tell you everything you need to know imo.

Ryan Woods reported to have been releases by Hull. Could he be one of the five? Or did all the booing put him off when he played for Exeter.

I doubt we could afford him , only thing in our favour is being close to his Birmingham base His lack of mobility really concerned me when I’ve seen him play over the last 18 months. The man looks like he’s pulling a caravan and brisk walks everywhere

I’d imagine it’s a real struggle trying to attract players with our shoestring budget. Time for change at the top and some real investment. Agree 100%. I wouldn't be surprised if we're getting outbid for players by some National League clubs, let alone League Two and League One sides. You never want to be in the situation we're in, but it's amplified massively by how much money is flying into football at the moment. We simply can't compete in League One with our current ownership, financial state **and** poor football infrastructure. We aren't a team that's skint but have a well regarded academy full of young players who can be sold. I'd be stunned if our academy over the past 10 years has been anything other than a moneypit. I try to be optimistic, but it's hard to be at the moment. We've barely got a team, our new signings do not look like they're the sort who'll keep us up. We're going to be desperate for a KaiKai, Campbell etc type loanee who effectively single handedly keeps us up.

Wasn't there a rumour he was upset with the club that they offered him a trial only? And that was the end of things? I agree that he'd be a Gamble and - unless he was on a very low base wage with higher appearance fees - not one we can afford. He obviously had a major injury, but he was training with us for a long time and still could barely manage a half of football. Chris Skitt spoke about Hurst convincing him to sign John-Lewis despite the medical saying no, because Hurst wanted him to be fit for 30 minutes at most - he valued his dressing room contributions more than his on pitch offering. You can do that with a player on the Sort of wages the shop would've been on. Not what Price would be commanding

Any player with known injury background will be a risk given the size of squad I’d expect us to have, especially if it’s been a long term injury. Nurse is a risk but hopefully the lad will have some luck. Loans will be vital but we will still need 4/5 decent signings on top of that, every player coming in now needs to add quality, I worry we are really struggling though, but time will tell.

I mean of the 12 squad players will Pierre and Nurse be ready for the start if the season. Effectively down to 10 and I'm unsure whether Perry will be moved on as well.
