Historical result. 36% of the vote is alarming for Labour but I attribute that to: independents/Greens campaigning on Gaza. Tactical voting between Labour/Lib Dems - played FPTP to perfection. Conservative voters not being scared of Starmer so felt safe enough not voting - Corbyn managed to galvanize Tories to come out and vote against him. Think the Labour strategy was also well thought out, as they targeted a big growth in vote in Scotland where the SNP were in free fall, so were abble to pick up 30 or so seats without too much effort, and concentrated their effort in England on winning key seats rather than just pilling up votes in seats they already held as Corbyn perhaps did. In time I suspect that a lot of informal conversations happened with Lib Dems so they didn't tread on each others toes in seats where they were going aganst the Conservatives. Some mistakes along the way but overall a very clever campaign by Labour, which perhaps offers some hope they have a decent plan on what they want to do in Government too. the biggest asset Labour had was Sunak who shoot himself in the foot in numerous occasions. As for Scotland , in the last election the SNP won 48 out 59 seats with Labour only winning 1 seat, this time around the SNP won only 9 seats whilst Labour win 37. I was listening to some Scottish political commentators who's view of this result was it was a vote for the least liked rather than a ringing endorsement for Labour, with An unpopular SNP However can they replicate such a victory in the Scottish assembly with there voting system. Usually the SNP benefit from the second vote.

I thought you may have voted for Alex Wagner given he is a local guy and a Town fan…. no one even knocked on my door "Wagner out" Didn’t see anyone knocking on any doors, which was kind of disappointing tbh as would have had a few questions……

Agreeing with what Venceremos said earlier about not assuming FPTP votes would translate into the same outcome if PR. I think the electorate is very smart at using FPTP for tactical voting. I also wonder why Valerioch describes every politician whose opinion he disagrees with as ‘odious’. Although in Jess Phillips case he probably meant to type ‘admirable’😊 Some people struggle with assertive, working class women. No coincidence that Jess Phillips and Angela Rayner get so much criticism.

Spare a thought for Carol Vorderman, who’s really struggling to accept the result… 😂
Channel Four’s coverage was hugely entertaining.

I see Wrekin MP Mark Pritchard, who previously sat on the Security and Intelligence Committee, and is paid £9,000 a month for “marketing advisory services” by an arms company, held on to his seat. Voters in the Wrekin must have the ability to hold theur noses, close their eyes, and still get that cross against the Conservative.

Alex Wagner was very busy campaigning for Helen in North Shropshire rather than in his own constituency.
All part of the unofficial deal between the Lib Dems and Labour. It is a great shame that Labour were campaigning in parts of the South Shropshire constituency such as Broseley, with a slightly larger swing then Lib Dems would have taken that seat as well

James Timpson of Timpsons key cutting stores in as Prisons minister - good move as he’s a lot of experience in the justice and prisons system and definately part of government that needs urgent and quick action

His brother was a Tory MP and I think his father also has Conservative affiliation. Agreed that the Timpsons have done a lot of good work with regard to prisons.

Will be given a peerage and put in the Lords in much the same way that David Cameron was.

Just realised that Sir Peter Bottomley, who (thankfully) lost his Worthing West seat, and was Father of the House, was only 2 years younger than Biden, at 79.

Tell me Pilch , did you vote this time ? I think before this election Marsden who defected to the Lib Dems if I remember correctly was the last election you voted in. You are right , a complete waste of a vote . Tell me you voted this time and put your cross against Julie Buckley . 😉👍 I voted to stay at home, that way I can criticise any of them without the need to defend the indefensible the only way I can see a change might benefit me personally is they might not be as quick to increase the retirement age as the tories would have done had they remained in power, maybe they will reduce it Reducing the pension age, Haha good luck with that

What have they done so far ? 😝 Starmer has appointed Liz Kendall as Secretary of State for Work and Pensions. Kendall has the same attitude towards the sick and disabled as IDS and McVey used to exhibit.

well done Labour , hope the shrewsbury mp doesnt defect like the last one i wasted a vote on now the fun begins, all those who didn't vote labour get to bash every decision starmer makes, the labourites will be defending things they used to critisize, and I'll be reminding them they have and linking to old threads ;-) for 5 years at least I've not voted either Conservative or Labour - so I'll have a free hand. I'll start by suggesting that 'The Labour Files' on You Tube is well worth having a look at. It reveals how the Israel Lobby has infiltrated the Labour Party and was instrumental in the removal of Corbyn. Asa Winstanley has researched this issue extensively on his website and in his book. electronicintifada.net/blogs/asa-winstanley/israeli-spy-still-working-labour-during-uk-election-campaign

I managed to retire at 54 👍😀 I was aiming for 50 but I couldn’t afford it until I got to 54 (well 54 and 4 months). It’s been over a year and I haven’t done half the things I wanted to. I’m amazed I had any time for anything when I was working.

Kendall has the same attitude towards the sick and disabled as IDS and McVey used to exhibit. Providing work is "good" fulfilling jobs then perhaps a stricter line is needed? Kendall said there was clear evidence that having a good job was very good for mental health, adding: “We know that if you’re in good work, your relapses can be cut by a third or even half. That’s better for you. It’s better for the NHS, it’s better for taxpayers.”
