Ipswich lost to Maidstone. Maybe they will come calling again.

I wish I understood tactics more. We had the same set of players out there today but looked a completely different team. I wonder if Matt Taylor is having the same thoughts as me tonight.

Play 4 at the back, keep the ball on the floor and don't play long, attach in numbers, hold numbers high up the pitch, cross balls from wide, allow plays to get forward rather than holding defensive lines and allow players freedom to express themselves. That's not the players decisions, that's the coach giving new instructions and freedom. Same players, different team. Also nothing to do with not playing for Matt Taylor. It's the difference in tactics and formation.

I would pay good money to find out why MT continued with 5 3 2 / 5 2 3 hoofball for so long when it did not work and he was risking his job. We did nothing special today. Played 4 at the back, packed the midfield with players in the best positions and pressed hard. There was nothing revolutionary. Most of us would have tried that if we was in charge. Of course mentality and confidence would have had a huge impact on performances which changing the manager often improves even for a short time.

Cambridge at home next, can't see past a home win? Then with 2 on the bounce and maybe up to 12/13th.
Seems like we actually have light to look forward to.

It couldnβt really have gone better could it? That was superb.
Iβm sure it wonβt always be like this and weβll have some awful days under Hurst this time around (because we arenβt going to challenge for promotion again..) but that was everything Iβve always defended the great man for! The idea we were defensive last time he was here is a myth, we always found a way to score and the way we put pressure on teams around the edge of their own box was a thrill in itself. Nothing passive and boring. Not showing too much respect. Having a go but without being absolutely free flowing. Canβt ask for much more than that from a lower league outfit.
That said, we played some great stuff at times and a period of the second half was the best, in my opinion, in years. We did choose to go long when the time was right but it was at least choreographed with channel runs (like SC often had us doing at our most effective) but mixing it up enough to not be as boring as most of his football.
Very very happy.

Welcome back Paul & Chris! What a brilliant start.
Really chuffed for the long-suffering away fans, who attended in good numbers again today.
How quickly apathy can turn to enthusiasm. For the first time in ages I'm looking forward to a game at the Meadow!

That was so so good. Just tending to the bruises and grazes all over my body from the goal celebrations.
I think we just saw ninety minutes of what weβve all wanted for years - a Town side on the front foot for most of the game, creating loads of chances, and scoring goals. It was just so nice watching us play proper football with loads of nice link-up play and combinations. I donβt think I have a single negative from today. It was so refreshing after the joyless performances of recent months.
Positives: - four at the back (hopefully we never have to watch the 3-5-2 experiment ever again); - Kenneh dropped for three ball-playing central midfielders who ran the game; - Winchester was unbelievable, getting it and popping it off, switching play, flying into 50/50s, whereβs he been? what did Taylor do to him? - similar story with Bayliss, really good performance, what did Taylor do to him? - Benning was excellent, bombing forward and playing loads of nice combinations with Shipley and Winchester; - bouncing away end.
Stick with that midfield three of Winchester, Bayliss and Perry and weβll have an enjoyable second half of the season.

Yep.....think most posters have said...get rid of this 5-3-2 rubbish for most of the season...nice to see an attack minded town for a change... instead of this dire defensive formation...... you'll never win many games playing that system....when was the last time town won away by two clear goals? π€π€

Early days, new manager bounceβ¦but things are looking slightly more positive than this time last week. PH has obviously came in and changed things around a bit - play it on the ground, using a formation that works. Players in their favoured positions and not shackled into playing defensively all game (ball chasing will always tire players quicker than having possession)
Udoh back, Bloxham getting his chance, Perry, Shippers and Windy playing in a solid, hard-working midfield. Strength at the back with Marosi, Dunks and Big Aaronβ¦amazing what can happen when a manager (head coach) lets players play their own game.
Couldβve been 3 or 4-0 to us on another day - they never really threatened us (although they were missing their two main CMs today, which may have been a factor to us βbullying themβ in midfield). Early days, but this Saturday eveningβs bottle of red seems to taste a little sweeter.
Thank you for PH & CD for a solid second comingβ¦keep us safe first and foremost - anything else from here on in this season would be a bonus

Great day out. Thoroughly deserved win, improved our Away goals scored by 50% from 4 to 6. The old 1-2-3. One clean sheet Two goals scored Three points safely banked. I can now look forward with optimism and starting sleeping well again.

When Hurst was last here he played a defensive formation and relied on hitting teams on the break. I think this time around he realised the supporters wouldnβt stand for that. Hence today.

Well - that was a great day out! A team that had been puttering along like a clapped out Skoda transformed into a Rolls-Royce overnight - was it really the same players? That was the best I have seen us play for years (in fact since Hurst last managed us). There was definitely a sense of excitement in the away end before the match and we were not disappointed, dominant from the off, totally bossing the midfield, passing to feet quickly all over the pitch and first to the second balls. We outrun, outpassed and outfought one of the form teams in the division and 4-0 would have been a fairer reflection of the game. Also great to be sat next to Tom Bloxham's dad who was rightly encouraging his lad throughout. No MOTM for me - the whole team were magnificent today. Roll on the rest of the season! Let's not get too carried away, maybe more a clapped out Skoda to a modern Skoda Superb, which are, by all accounts pretty superb.
MOTM Hursty! aided and abetted by the return of Udoh (which I do believe to be a for real recovery from injury early, not some sort of surmised "strike" he was on).

An absolute joy of an away day.
So much so that I'm reluctant to even talk tactics or analyse the game in any real depth, but I will make some quick points.
It will never not shock me how quickly things can change in football and to echo much of what's already been said, I'm scratching my head asking how even is this the same squad of players?
I don't know what it is about four at the back but there just seemed to be absolute clarity in what the players were being asked to do. Feeney looked like he'd been playing there all season.
We may have finally found the right position for Bloxham (thank you Morecambe) and if we didn't know it already, Shipley is far more of a creative influence further up the pitch.
The bar has been set so low this season that maybe I've lost some perspective but I can categorically say that today was one of my all-time favourite away days and dare I say I felt weirdly emotional about it.
Brilliant Salop. Welcome back Paul.

How many games have we looked like winning until one little mistake. Mistakes will occur, but maybe it's better to be on the front foot than the back foot?

Hi Matt, good to know you're still checking in after your sacking. Maybe we looked like a completely different team because we were....playing different players with a different formation and different mentality. I'm not sure this result alone is even massive vindication for Paul Hurst in all honesty, but it's definitely vindication for giving the job to an actual manager who will do things and affect change as opposed to a glorified PE teacher. A casual acquaintance of mine remarked during today's game that he could have probably done a better job with this squad than Taylor, and I'm inclined to agree - I'd go as far as to say any poster on here other than chirkshrew or wakemenender (aka Matt Taylor) could.

What a difference having a plan on how to score goals and how to defend at corners.
Listening to some Northampton fans talking as we went back to the car, their view was Northampton were second best in every department and didn't win a single 2nd ball. This was an honest assessment rather than moaning because they lost. Remember Northampton had won 8 out of 12 before today.
Our first goal had at least 8 passes in it. In a recent away game we managed 42 passes in the whole of the first half.
Not going to go over the top after one game but I couldn't believe the difference with just 2 days on the training ground.
A thoroughly entertaining afternoon out, I can't remember the last time I said that.

Home to Suffolk and absolutely buzzing about that, I'm struggling to remember the last time we played as well as that, with freedom. It's like the shackles have been taken off, the straightjacket removed, and suddenly, playing with freedom, we've discovered that attack is actually the best form of defence. I was pretty happy at half time but the first 25 mins of the second half was, simply, as good as it gets, wave after wave of attack, chance after chance. Brilliant town, absolutely superb.
Udoh was outstanding for someone who's been out, Winchester in the middle was like a new signing, Dunkley and Pierre magnificent, Marosi had absolutely nothing to do.
I was positive before the game, but the best I could hope for was a draw, but this has blown my expectations out of the water. Not getting carried away, and there's a lot to do to make sure we're in this league next season, but I'd go as far as to say this performance was better than most if not all under Cotterill, perhaps even since Hurst was last with us.
I've long had a feeling that Hurst and Shrewsbury are just a match that is meant to be. Maybe that's just hopeless romanticism, maybe not, and of course it's early days but I think we're all in agreement that today would never have happened under Taylor. Same players but it would have been a manifestly different performance and almost certainly a different outcome. Plenty of that, of course, is just the new manager bounce, and for teams like Northampton, the more you go on a winning streak the more likely it is that you'll lose the next one, but more than the result, it's the shape, the tactics and the performance that I've been so impressed with, and the idea that I might actually be able to enjoy watching the Town again is a feeling I've not had in a long time.
Welcome back Paul.

In other L1 games today I see Luke Leahy actually missed from the penalty spot, which doesnt happen very often.
They had another penalty later and it was taken by another player who scored it.
Shared the points with Fleetwood which is a good result for us.
