Couldn't agree more, the parents are the issue. Lazy culture has kicked in, some drive 100 yards with the excuse of carrying on the journey elsewhere. Walk, then drive the opposite way to the school, contribute to making the school environment safer. I accept that this does occur but is over egged by the media. Where I live, I am reasonably certain that all parents who live in the village walk with their children to the primary school. The problem is that many live well outside the immediate area and have no option but to drive in or are bussed in. Around schools are a nightmare at dropping off and picking up times. Parents parking everywhere they shouldnt, kids running everywhere. Riding my bike past Minsterley school today I was nearly reversed into by a woman who had abandoned her vehicle half in the hedge very close to the pedestrian crossing. I was amazed at where she had 'parked' and that she was reversing out onto a busy main road. Clearly handt seen me, thankfully I'd clocked her very early on along with kids playing around close to the road edge. It's very similar at most other schools I'm driving past. Extremely dangerous to anyone not aware of basic safety, no wonder kids are not allowed to ride to school any more.

Im all for it. Cars doing 35 in my village now will hopefully do 25, and the rest of us will do 20.
Good stuff.

Admittedly this nugget was from someone opposed to the idea on the radio this morning, he reckoned the "sweet spot" for petrol engine efficiency was from 30mph to 55mph. Doing 20mph would, so he said, be around 15% less efficient.
Maybe they should have concentrated on getting people to not do 35 in a 30 before implementing this? I like the idea some countries do of having sensors which change the traffic lights/pedestrian crossing lights to red if you appoach them over the speed limit.

Don't know why they don't use technology, my phone knows how fast I'm going and what the speed limit is just put a chip in every car and a speed limiter connected job done

Yes I’ve got it on my car although it relies on me turning it on. I’m on my third car with adaptive cruise control, it’s a fantastic driver aid

But what I would say...is driving at 20mph for any length of time is so mind-numbingly boring, it would likely increase the chances of accidents. I accept those accidents would be less serious. And i also accept that the 20mph zones should be short and sweet. Hopefully the Welsh find a happy medium that the rest of the UK can follow in the future.

Idiotic policy from idiotic leaders. There's an awful lot of that about these days. Its why I don't consider "populism" a dirty word, I just see it as people pushing back against idiots who dream s**t like this up.

Blame some guy called Lee Waters, Member of the Senedd, who has been the driving force behind this. Apparently, he was involved in a website called Cycling Uk which heavily promotes walking and cycling. www.cyclinguk.org/blog/lee-waters-ms-how-make-wales-more-active"We have developed a transport system that is centred on making it easy to drive a car, and places barriers to travelling actively. We need to ensure that walking and cycling are the most convenient transport options for shorter journeys for as many people as possible".

Perhaps "populism" will get people taking more interest in politics when elections come around? Voters are too easily influenced by the newspapers, maybe get to hustings meetings and weigh up for themselves the person and the policies of those seeking their vote?

In a country where 25% of car journeys are 1 mile or less and 70% are less than 5 miles why are policies to encourage cycling and walking idiotic?
We have major problems with obesity and respiratory illness, reducing emissions and encouraging more active life styles are important if we want to improve the general health of the public.
My neighbour drives her teenage child 800 metres to school and back every day, another neighbour drives 1 mile to a gym where he runs on a treadmill and rides a stationary bike. Who is the idiot?
As for 20mph speed limits, they are welcome in the right place. In South Manchester most housing was built during the first 50 years of the last century at a time when few people owned cars. So the roads can't cope with the volume of traffic and in many households each adult owns a car but there is nowhere to park them. So the cars are dumped at the side of the road reducing the usable carriageway to a single track down the middle. 20mph is more than fast enough in these circumstances.
As for the worry about emissions at low speed, when 70% of journeys are less than 5 miles engines are not warmed up and are operating at sub optimal efficiency. Another reason to cycle, walk or use public transport.

Your chance to (finally) have your vote on whether its sensible to reduce to 20 mph. I've signed, and guess a lot of others will do so too. The numbers are growing very fast, not surprisingly. petitions.senedd.wales/petitions/245548

If you're on a long journey, you won't need to do much driving at 20mph.
If you're on a short journey, perhaps you could have walked or cycled instead.
If it saves the 6-10 lives each year that's anticipated (not forgetting many more beloved pets and animals), it's well worth trying at the cost of what is at worst a minor inconvenience.

Get everyone down to 30 and 20 outside schools instead.
How many of those 6 to 10 lives in theory it saves involved drivers exceeding the 30 limit?

You're asking what the actual speeds will be of the drivers who would have killed 6-10 people, but who it's projected won't now kill those people because of the 20mph speed limit? That's a tricky one!

Once the mobile speed cameras have packed up for the night and the locations of the static cameras are known, they will be overtaking the law abiding drivers and surprising pedestrians who assume they have time to cross, there could even be more deaths.

Yeah, that wasn't my point. You were asking what the speeds might be of the hypothetical drivers who won't kill 6-10 people in the projections. So, erm, they're hypothetical. Of course some go over 30 now, just as they go over 40, 50, 60 and 70. I expect everyone has at some point. But few go at 45 in a 30 zone, and I expect few will go at 35 in a 20 zone. How many overtake in a 30mph zone now? Hardly ever see it. I doubt that more will do so in a 20mph zone. It changes behaviours. Not everyone's obviously but the perception shifts. The idea that a 30mph speed limit is somehow safer than 20mph is crazy.

It's always best if a law can be accepted and considered reasonable and I think we are just about getting to that point with 30 mph and 20 outside schools. I don't think it's crazy when drivers know the engine speed which corresponds with 30mph and don't have to be distracted checking their speed. I don't think It's crazy when pedestrians also have an inate idea of how fast a car will be on them at 30, but don't have any idea of how fast a car going around 20 will get to them.
