Anyone ever seen a Test cricketer bigger than Cornwall? I can only think of Colin Milburn. Milburn was only 18 stone. Cornwall is 22 stone.

85.4 overs, Eng 258-4, Pope 91*, Buttler 56*
The umpires convene, check the light and take the players off. That's it for Day 1.

I cannot quite understand how bad light stops play when the floodlights have already been on for most of the afternoon! They should turn the watts up a bit more

Superb knocks from both Pope and Buttler there. Particularly glad about Buttler’s as on some social media channels I see this sickening clamour for the vastly inferior Sam Billings or Ben Foakes. Hopefully this innings proves the folly of these fanciful notions once and for all.

I was in the old pavilion at Old Trafford for a Test v WI when Garner walked past with the shortest guy in the WI team (Larry Gomes?). There was over a foot difference between them, hard to believe that they played the same game.

I’ll bore on with another Joel Garner memory, after he finished first class cricket he played in the Lancashire league. I went to watch him and he bowled with 9 fielders behind square, the only man in front was mid off whose job was to polish the ball and pass it to him.
Every ball was short of a length on or outside off stump and came through at chest height. Impossible for the batter to get on the front foot and very difficult to score off. Also unlikely to take wickets provided the ball wasn’t played at.
He bowled his 11 overs consecutively and finished with 1 for 15. It was very boring and I didn’t go to any more games when he was playing.

87.6 overs Pope dropped on 91 by Cornwall. 89.1 overs, Pope b Gabriel 91 (Eng 262-5)
It's only the second time since 1975 that an England batsman has been in the 90s overnight and failed to get a hundred. Kevin Pietersen is the only other one in Brisbane in 2006 when he fell for 92.
90.6 overs, Woakes b Roach 1 (Eng 267-6) Roach claims his 200th test wicket as Woakes chops on for 1
Bugger Butler gone now 14-3 this morning! Can Dom Bess get a hat-trick of 31* scores this series ?
91.4 overs, Buttler c Holder b Gabriel 67 (Eng 272-7)
WI had their shredded wheat as Archer goes!
92.4 overs, Archer c Holder b Roach 3 (Eng 280-8)

It was very boring and I didn’t go to any more games when he was playing. When I lived in Oldham, for the first 12 years I lived on the Coppice, a 10 minute walk from Werneth CC. I used to go and watch them now and again and I was lucky to see the home club's professional Carl Hooper in action over the course of a couple of seasons. He was always in the thick of the action, if he wasn't hitting the ball out of the ground then he was taking wickets with his off spin. He was such a nice guy as well, always approachable and very knowledgeable about the game. From memory I think I did see Joel Garner play for one of the visiting sides during this time, but I cannot remember who the opposition were. Collis King was another visiting professional and I'm sure Colin Croft also made an appearance one year.

I expected him to be tall, but my memory was of his huge hands, absolutely massive

Not a bad total after all! Now let's hope we can get into their batting today as weather is still iffy for the next 3 days.

I've remembered that it was Gus Logie who was the little guy with Garner. There's a photo of them on Google images, Logie doesn't reach Garner's shoulder.

Foolish Billings and Foakes notions put to bed - tick In your opinion. One innings doesn't make a Summer, Foakes is the better keeper and should be given his opportunity.

Tantalisingly the rain has stopped and the sun is shining brightly, I’m about 6 miles from OT.
However, the local forecast is 100% rain all day and thunderstorms later.
