Exceptionally lucky not to concede at least one today but a definite improvement on Tuesday. Phil Parkinson. "I can’t believe we haven’t got anything from the game." “We dominated for the majority of it." “We hit the woodwork three times, crosses flashed across the face of the goal." “Not just draw but we deserved to win the game." “As we know it is about putting the ball in the back of the net when you get in those positions."It seems like it was our day today, on the law of averages we probably wouldn't win many times when under such intense pressure, but a really great defensive effort and some luck to keep them out. An important win given the tough games coming up.

" We really have hit rock bottom, losing to a team with Donald Love in it, no idea where we go from here" From the Sunderland forum. To be fair to them I was expecting loads of "we should be beating the likes of Shrewsbury" type comments but they're generally just very critical of their own team's performance.

Back up to 12th in the table. Cov and the play off places four points off. Incredibly tight division at the minute. And despite the questions marks that's just the one defeat in the last eight games. Although next four are all against top ten sides. It'll be interesting to see where we are once we're through the other side of that. No idea what to expect; for some reason when I look to the performances I'm concerned we're set to struggle...even those performances have brought about one defeat in eight. Strange season indeed...

a complete contrast to the previous performance , thought the midfield and defence did very well but some inconsistent clearences from the defence did create our own problems , i thought that was Edwards best game of the season, Norburn and whalley were very good. love struggled against a tricky and pacey number 33. a well taken goal by cummings ball on the ground and surgical shoot to the far corner, town did actually try to keep the ball on the ground in the last third this game. we had a bit more varity in attack. we forced a save from a free kick but cant recal who it.
i dont remember there keeper making a save in the second half , rather suprised to see Cummings coming off so early in the second half. not a fan of sitting deep and inviting pressuer, all credit to the defence for some resilent defending but at times it looked a bit like the alamo
our goal lead a charmed life in the second minute a playter split the center backs but missed,i cant remmember when but a low cross was whipped in and sliding player missed to get contact, the worst miss was when there number 19 was free on the far corner of the box and hit the ball over the bar , they also hit the post been hit twice, i think O'Leary got his fingers to it to tip it over the bar. Sunderland fans may feel disapointed that they did not at least get a point.
what Subdeland did well in the first half was give town no time on the ball and often had a cluster of players around a town player with the ball.
the best i was hoping for was a draw so this was a plesently unexpected win with an improved performance.

For a defensive team like us wins are always going to attract comments about how "unlucky" they have been from opposing managers, we score, we cling on, fair enough. Dave Edwards coming into his own now, his experience helps make all the others feel top class. Imagine if the Morison transfer had paid off.

Giles in for Edwards and with that formation (Golbourne at LB) and I think we’d look solid going forward and solid defensively

Thought we played really well today and hopefully this will give the players (and Sam Ricketts) plenty of confidence for the games to come. Well done all!
Sunderland fans were quiet all afternoon.

I thought we defended well from the front and the central defenders did a very good job defending crosses. I think when Sunderland's performance is analysed it will show that the shots they had at goal were from positions where conversion rates are lower. I never felt that they would undo us as I didn't see enough flair and inventiveness from them and, apart from the numbers 3 and 4 at the back they were not going to match us physically.
Very pleased to see well over 6,000 Shrewsbury Town fans at the game. This team deserves that level of support every weekend.

Considering the size of the club and the money they’ve spent it’s embarrassing they’re even in the division, let alone putting in performances like that.
Today for us just shows how important it is that we get the first goal. Credit to scapegoat of the season so far Mr Laurent for creating it, the finish was never in doubt.

Yes Josh Laurent.
That is what we’ve been waiting to see. His best performance in a Town shirt.
Everyone put a shift in, and the first half attacking intent was a refreshing change. Not quite so after the break, but great resilience shown!!

It's great when a big team comes to town with a big support and creates a real carnival atmosphere.
However, it's arguably even better when, like today, a big team comes to town with a big support which then proceeds to go totally quiet apart from nonsensically appealing for unlikely refereeing calls, and then leaves 5-10 minutes early. Shows you your team's doing something right.
Yes, we were slightly fortunate to win, but that was a very organised and hardworking display. The midfield covered a lot of ground. I would give Pierre MOTM, however, as I lost count of the number of times he cleared the danger from our box. Another excellent finish from the man they're already calling "The Lid", although I'm not 100% convinced he's suited to the lone striker role.

Agree on Cummins not being a natural lone striker, but felt Edwards the pressure off him by almost being that physical presence up top. Can’t wait until he scores his first league goal in this second spell back.

Theres no doubt we had some luck but great to see 100% effort from every town player. The big name players of Sunderland and Portsmouth can learn from us.

More delusions of grandeur from a "big" club. The arrogance of these people makes me laugh. They still think they should be playing Chelsea and Manchester United, etc. Well suck it up, sunshine, you're down here with us now, and don't expect us to roll over for you, because it ain't gonna happen.

I haven’t read everything before i write this but this is my underlining thoughts ........ Brilliant !!!! .....but Mr Ricketts think about what has happened today...,..the formation, the players that thAt were on the pitch today .......Ricketts must stick with the same tactics and line up .....ffs it works ....stay with it ........brilliant.

I guess they did hit the woodwork twice so perhaps that what he meant. 3 times I counted first half a long shot struck an upright 2nd half, we all left a ball to drop and in nipped a little guy to head against the bottom of a post and then the crossbar was rattled

When Edwards is fit and playing, he will give you 110%, you can be assured of that he amazes me how high he can leap to head those dodgy goal kicks of ours ;-) great shift from him today, maybe he could have stayed on a little longer it was noticeable how much more pressure Sunderland put on us after he went off we are going to need it again next week owd Dave

God the Sunderland fans have moaned. I'm just surprised they haven't complained that the clocks have gone back and the 4th official should have held up a board for 64 minutes added time.

Superb first half with slight change of system. Two decent teams & I was very happy to see an energetic, higher up the pitch Salop who were trying to move the ball a lot quicker than normal. Even had Sunderland had levelled it was a huge improvement. Second half was a case of riding our luck really. Sure, we defended well under huge pressure but it was ultimately poor finishing & woodwork that saw us get away with increasingly negative tactics as the game went on. Really not sure taking off all but one outlet & giving Sunderland nothing to worry about was the right move & abuse would be flying at Ricketts left, right & centre if Sunderland found their way back in. Alas they didn’t and what a win..... Massive credit to Edwards. I had written him off as a footballer to be honest. Never doubted his effort & commitment, nor his ability to find opportunities in the box but technically I thought he was gone. Thank god today he came back at me and then some... technically able & looking lean. If he can produce that again, it’ll be like a new signing (at last). Also thought Cummings was very good and I’m a bit baffled about all the lone striker stuff as he, Whalley & Edwards spent the first half alternating anyway. Healthy week that hasn’t felt very healthy for most part. Same for the league position. A win to end it that may just give the fans a connection with this team at an interesting time... can’t wait for next weekend now.

Be good to watch the highlights back knowing the result! Classic smash and grab performance from Town yesterday and good to see some players coming in and being able to influence the game after not having much game time.
As always goals change games. Had Sunderland taken their chances in the opening 20 minutes it could have been a very different game as I don't think we could have chased that game. Cummings really showing his worth as when he gets a chance he looks calm and more often than not scores, which is really important if we don't create many chances.
Edwards and Whalley acted as a good foil for him up front and would like to see that formation again, although we still need to work on playing to feet to the strikers rather than long balls up front. O'Leary also really starting to impress with two more match winning saves.
Only downside is that the squad is looking a bit short on players, particuarly attacking players, and one or two players still not quite up to a full 90 minutes. Couple more injuries and we will be down to the bare bones
