So the logical conclusion to what Giles is saying is that we should be increasing the number of 4 day County Championship games to give players more experience in playing red ball cricket. Try telling that to the ECB, who have been marginalising the 4 day game for years. Nowadays it's mainly played in April and May and late August and September. They aren't exactly prioritizing it. And by bringing in The Hundred (which survey after survey told them isn't wanted by cricket fans) they've now started on the process of marginalising the 50 over game too, which will be played at the same time as The Hundred with the best players missing, no overseas players, and the Final no longer at Lords. Give the bloke a chance, he's only just taken the job. As with what happened with our white ball cricket it won't be achieved overnight.

Worcester are playing half a dozen of the 2nd eleven against Australia today and yet the tickets are £25 pounds..and even Members are being charged that. Good luck with the attendance for that one then! You'd have thought this might have been a match where Moeen could play to try to find some form. But no, the ECB haven't given him permission to do so. Would have been an ideal opportunity for Moeen, perhaps the ECB could have asked Worcs if Bairstow and Butler could have guested as well! I think keeping the England players away from the Australians before the second test is the right approach. It would have been good if they could have had some cricket but for me that shouldn't be against the team they've just lost to.

Possible that Denly and Roy could swap places if England stick with the same batsmen. I think Archer is now ahead of Stone to replace Anderson at Lords. I like Denly but he is probably the most vulnerable of the batters at the moment. He's still only had four games so, on recent selection policy, they are likely to stick with him for at least another game yet and possibly two of three more games. Later in the series, if he and Roy are struggling, I can see Roy batting at four with Sibley brought in to open.

The bowling isn't too bad. Leach, Tongue, Morris and Finch. No spin apart from Rhodes though. As I've said, it would have been ideal for Moeen. Crazy! I thought Josh Tongue was out for the season, my mistake. No. That's Twohig. Injury caused by playing football!

He's another, like Mark Wood, who seems to be very injury prone.

I see that Steyn and now Amla have retired from international cricket. Two great cricketers, a big loss for South African cricket.

43-5 Declared on 201-9, got to give the Australians a chance. Cameron Bancroft hasn't got the runs in this game that he was looking for and needed ahead of Lords.

Went to New Rd yesterday and saw a good day of 'proper' cricket. Saw all the Aussie players at some time or other, apart from Steve Smith & David Warner !! I love conspiracies so did the Aussies ease off when Worc 'reserves' were 8 down, so that the home club would not miss out on today's gate receipts ? Quite a few people were having a moan at the cost of beer (£5.50 a pint) and weak coffee at £3 a cup. Excellent crowd though and not far off being full I would have thought ! Maybe the cost of £30 on the day put a few off. Being a member for 20 years this is the first time we have been charged for an International team tour match. But as long as the club benefits I don't mind. Paying £5.50 for an awful pint of beer is another thing !!

So he could have played for Worcs vs the tourists if the ECB had announced the 2nd test squad earlier? I'm sure the New Road faithful would have been pleased to have seen him back.

Going back a number of years and I remember county teams putting out full strength teams when they used to play the visiting tourists. Well before central contracts of course but in between test matches players used to go back to their counties to play first class cricket and sometimes would come up against the tourists, but this time playing for their county. So many of the test team are lacking red ball cricket, it's a shame that they can't go back to their counties but sadly there's no county championship cricket at the minute for them to play in anyway.

Modern fixture congestion is crazy in my opinion. Even if there were county games England players could play in during The Ashes there are only two gaps between tests that would allow them to do so due to the back to back fixture scheduling.

I believe that if (as seems likely) Lancs get a home quarter final in the T20, then they can't play it at Old Trafford as the England v Australia game is being played there. Well done ECB.

It seems as if it can't be held at one of the out grounds either (Liverpool, Blackpool etc.) because they can't fulfil Sky's needs. So it's likely to be held either away or at neutral venue (Leeds anyone!). Pretty farcical.

James Pattinson omitted from the 12 man Australian squad for the Lords test. Either Starc or Hazlewood to come into the side.

Makes sense to bring Starc or indeed Hazlewood I suspect Starc will be the choice if just one as Lords seems to favour left arm bowlers I am told.

Can’t wait for the accursed cricket season to draw to a close, so we can get another 1,000 - 1,500 on our gates. Is that a fact? 😉

Aussies win the toss and decide to bowl!!
Australia captain Tim Paine: "There's been a bit of weather around. A shortened game, I think probably the best way to win it is to take more wickets. Josh Hazlewood comes in for James Pattinson. He has a great record here and James' long-term future is our priority."
