Roy will have to have a run in the side but he doesn't appear to have much idea where his off stump is, which isn't a great attribute for a test match opening batter.

Jason Roy is sadly not a test match opener. Can we not try specialist batsmen in this position please?

9.1 overs - WICKET
Root lbw b Hazlewood 14 (Eng 26-2)
Oh no. Just as England managed to grab some momentum skipper Joe Root is out! It's another good delivery from Josh Hazlewood, nipping back and hitting him on the pad. It looked very out. Root asks Burns about a review but doesn't get much support. He turns and slowly walks back to the pavilion.

Northwestman will be dismayed that Shagger Curran isn’t in the eleven once more. I know for a fact that he’s a huge advocate of the lad. It is Sam Curran by the way.

Lunch - Eng 76-2. Burns 34, Denly 27
Solid as a rock from Rory Burns. England will take that after losing those two early wickets.

32 overs - WICKET Denly c Paine b Hazlewood 30 (Eng 92-3) A shame for Denly, he'd played very nicely today but he got a beauty from Hazelwood who has bowled very well so far.

36 overs, 50 for Burns. Eng 109-3
Burns consolidates and pushes through the covers for two more to record his third Test fifty, this one from 119 balls.

42.3 overs - WICKET Buttler c Paine b Siddle 12 (Eng 136-5) Jos Buttler fans look away now. This does not look good. Hanging the bat out to dry as they say.
45.2 overs - WICKET
Stokes lbw b Lyon 13 (Eng 138-6)

4 days looks like plenty of time for the Aussies to get this done n dusted

England's best hope seems to be that the rain starts early enough tomorrow - and perhaps carries on into Saturday.

Selectors arrogance is costing us again. Great opportunity to say we were outplayed at Edgbaston.
You can imagine the selectors meeting... "We need to have a new game plan, so we know we were without Anderson but with Archer in it solves that, we need a in form spinner left arm preferably okay send for Leach so far so good....(then inertia) we will give that a try anyone for G & T?"
To make the best of a bad job they should change the batting order in second innings open with Burns and Denly put Roy and Buttler lower down and perhaps even promote Woakes up the order.
Of course as has been suggested rain would be most welcome.but being an optimist you just never know what damage our bowlers can do...oh but the concern is even if they do a lot.... our batsmen cannot take advantage of it.!

That waft by Roy was even worse than those that depart my gulley after 4 cans of baked beans.

Good stuff from England this morning, but the umpiring is still suspect. An incredible decision to not give Head out LBW, rightly overturned on review when it was shown to be hitting middle stump about two thirds up.

Looks like the weather might be relenting for my annual trip to Rhos on Sea.
Glamorgan v Lancashire starts on Sunday.

Completely baffled by this remark. Although I acknowledge the qualities of Sam Curran, I don't recall enthusing about him to any degree, other than observing that his left arm bowling might be of value as a variation and that he might make a meaningful contribution to the middle order batting.

So it's not been too brilliant a Spring and Summer, and the Pears are not likely to ripen this season !!!

Can't see Worcs employing Ferguson again. His performances for them this season were at best no more than average.

12:25 - WICKET
Harris c Bairstow b Archer 8 (Aus 12-1)
And Marcus Harris couldn't survive! Jofra Archer with yet another beauty, squaring the left-hander up and he tickles one through off the shoulder of the bat to the keeper.
England with the early strike.

I hope this won't be another test badly affected by the weather. The Lords test was a really good game that would have produced a positive result if just a bit more play had been possible.

8.4 overs - WICKET
Khawaja c Bairstow b Broad 8 (Aus 25-2)
Reviewed by England and ultra edge confirms a slight snick as ball goes past the bat.

Ripen...............rotten more like, another depressing Batting display apart from Ferguson finally getting some runs, too little too late I'm afraid Ferguson has now departed 'for personal reasons'. Rutherford has been brought back for the rest of the season. I think young Ferguson got married just before he joined Worc for this season !! Presumably his wife came over with him, maybe couldn't settle in this climate, and was desperate to get back to Aus. Hence, something like that - seeing his new bride unhappy - would probably upset his form with the bat.

31.3 overs - WICKET Warner c Bairstow b Archer 61 (Aus 136-3) Got himmmmm!!!!
A break in play does the job as Jofra Archer serves up another absolute belter to dismiss David Warner. Very similar to the one which saw off Marcus Harris, squares up the left hander and finds the edge.
-----
32.5 overs - WICKET
Head b Broad 0 (Aus 138-4)
That is perfection! As good as it gets from Stuart Broad, pitching on middle, hitting the very top of off. Fantastic ball!
-----
33.6 overs - WICKET
Wade b Archer 0 (Aus 139-5)
And another one! Another duck as well. In the World Cup Matthew Wade would have survived this. A sharp ball into his hip, he flicks it down, the ball rolls slowly onto leg stump and just about dislodges the bail.
