Interesting article:- www.thecricketer.com/Topics/banner/richard_gould_surrey_ecb_the_hundred_interview.htmlThe Hundred is clearly going to wreck the 50 overs competition, as it's going to be scheduled at the same time, will take away the Counties best players, and no overseas stars will be permitted to play in the 50 overs games. We've spent the last 4 years working towards winning the 50 over World Cup, and now are engaged in trashing the format. Unbelievable.

According to Bayliss, we should reduce the Counties from 18 to 10. That's rich coming from someone who has admitted he hardly ever has watched County Cricket. So that would be Middlesex, Surrey, Hampshire, Glamorgan, Warwickshire, Nottingham, Lancashire, Yorkshire, Durham and maybe Gloucester. Essex, Kent, Sussex, Somerset, Worcester, Leicester, Northants, Derbyshire would all be consigned to Minor Counties cricket. This includes the two Counties who are currently 1st and 2nd in Division 1! www.espncricinfo.com/story/_/id/27641582/trevor-bayliss-calls-fewer-counties-better-pitches-bridge-huge-gap-international-level

The 100 is something I've mentioned before a few times and is something I've been following. I know there will be those who say any negativity is what T20 received and that is flourishing now, but you can now see that there was a market for T20 with its short form and big hitting. But I' struggling to see the need for the 100.
I could spend a long time criticising their argument/justifications for the the new form, the worst being the current forms are too complicated and the new form will all of a sudden attacht new crowds. But for me it is ultimately down to the ECB failing to capitalise on T20 in the domestic format and being envious of the IPL/Big Bash with the city based franchise.
But what sums it up for me is this summer has been deemed a glorious success and everyone says they want to capitalise on this, the ECB are doing this by downgrading the one form and marginalising the other

Book ending domestic red ball cricket into the season is not the answer, far from it. As for reducing the number of county teams, surely that would actually reduce the number of players eligible/qualified to play for England? That is unless the ECB reduce the amount of overseas players allowed into the domestic game?

Blimey! Kyle Abbott of Hants has taken 17 wickets against Somerset. 9/40 and 8/46. WOW some performance that. I think he's done more than a decent job for Hants in the last few seasons. The best figures in first class cricket since Jim Laker's famous 19/90 against Australia at Old Trafford in 1956.

Excellent 4 overs from Mooen. He really did pin them down.

Excellent 4 overs from Mooen. He really did pin them down. Yes, he bowled and captained well. It was a shame to read in the week that he may be considering retiring from test cricket, hopefully after a short break he will want to come back, he's still England's best spinner.

Leaving Bairstow out, for a while, is understandable but I don't think Buttler's keeping is up to test match standards, particularly not when standing up but I guess he won't have to do that much in New Zealand. Foakes omission is a surprising one and may indicate the way the selectors are going to go with regard to the wicket keeper. It will be interesting to see to make up of the top six, assuming Buttler will bat at seven. Denly deserves the chance to continue in the side, but if Root returns to four he could bat at three allowing one of the new openers to play. Pope is probably penciled in for the number six spot, a more natural position for him. I like the selection of both the Lancashire bowlers, despite their relative lack of wickets in four day cricket. Mahmood has real pace and has shown in ODI cricket that he is a skillful bowler. Parkinson I've liked for a long time and he is deserving of a chance, but good spin options in Mooen's absence do look a bit scarce at the moment. Parkinson has been criticised in the past for bowling a bit too slowly, but he's quite an old fashioned spinner in that regard and he has plenty of variation in his armoury.

Totally agree with you about Parkinson. Saw him a couple of seasons ago and he is definitely very promising.

Excerpts from an interesting interview with Michael Carberry from the October edition of Wisden Cricket Monthly, he certainly doesn't pull any punches on what he thinks! www.wisden.com/stories/exclusive/people-selected-team-idiots-michael-carberryMeanwhile, reports today indicate Gary Kirsten is the favourite to be the new England coach. That would be a good choice if they can persuade him to take it, but he has indicated in the past that he doesn't want such a role anymore due to the amount of travelling, time away from home and impact on his family.

Very pleased that they chose an Englishman. Always nice to see International sports teams managed/coached by one of there own. Good luck Chris Silverwood, hope you will be very successful.

I would have preferred Kirsten, but Silverwood is a good choice. His familiarity with the current England setup and his recent experience, and achievements, in the county game are definite advantages.

England begin their tour of New Zealand tomorrow with the first of 5, yes 5 T20 games!
But, let's be grateful, they will also play 2 test matches later in the month.
