As Spring is now here and the 2019 cricket season proper is about to start next week. A big summer ahead in England with the World Cup in May/June and then The Ashes in August/September. Ollie Pope is the first to stick his hand up for a place in the England batting order with a fine 251 for Surrey against MCC in the traditional season opener. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/47695624Elsewhere Alastair Cook made 150* against Cambridge University in his first knock for Essex since retiring from test match cricket. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/47709314

Yep, looking forward to the new cricket season too. As soon as the footie finishes I will be off to Worcester most weeks (EXCLUDING T20) and the odd Shrewsbury/Shropshire game. Also looking forward to the World Cup, and decided to go and watch an emerging side in that one (AFGHANISTAN v Sri Lanka), and also looking forward to the Aussie Test at Old Trafford. Lets hope we get another great Summer weather wise.

I see that Somerset have finally installed floodlights at Taunton.
That leaves Worcester as the ONLY County not to have them. How much longer can they get away with this before the ECB starts leaning on them? It must have some knock on effect on revenue too, as Sky can't show any evening games from there unless temporary lights are brought in or the game starts earlier.

I've been to New Road in the past when temporary floodlights were used, and they worked well. I'm not sure why they are no longer used, maybe it's very expensive?

Well Northwestman, it's not actually a case of "how long can they get away with it", as more of a case of (after two or three requests for installation) being refused planning permission by the local Council. Also I think, but not absolutely sure, that the flooding at the ground may be a problem. The playing area is below the water table so maybe underground cables come into the equation !! And as you know.... electricity and water don't mix too well. But then again it may be that they might obscure the beautiful view of the Cathedral. Who knows ??

Maybe it might be that they have to grasp the nettle and relocate to an out of town site somewhere near Sixfields? All in the name of progress. But that would be wanton vandalism of the worst kind to one of the most beautiful grounds in the world.

The 5.30 starts for T20 games at New Road (due to lack of floodlights) are very frustrating as I often can’t get out of work in time to make the start. But I still plan to pop over to New Road whenever I can as I do every summer, already have tickets for Day 2 of Worcs v Australia and will probably try to fit in a few T20 games, unfortunately the Royal London Cup is taking place far too early this year (due to the World Cup of course) and I’ll be away over Easter so I’ll probably have to miss that this year.

Good to see Toby Roland Jones back playing. There are plenty of spots up for grabs in the test team so the more competition the better.

I hope you meant Sixways, as I think Sixfields is in Northamptonshire. 3 or 4 seasons ago we had to play most our 1st class home games at Kidderminster because the ground flooded in the Winter, and then just as it was becoming playable again the ground flooded again during the Summer. There was mention of maybe moving but the committee and supporters all said that was not an option and were adamant that we would stay at New Road. Thank goodness for that. As you say, it's a beautiful ground and a lovely place/atmosphere to watch the wonderful game.

There are enough soulless out of town football grounds without cricket joining in.

James Vince already talking himself up as a possible England opener. I can't think of many candidates who are technically worse for that position than James Vince. It would be great if Haseeb Hameed could finally rediscover his form, he looked the real deal in his short time in the test team and is still at an age where he could play for a long time if he could establish himself.

There are enough soulless out of town football grounds without cricket joining in. They have already. Have you seen the Test Grounds recently? Old Trafford is a particularly appalling example with its 2 Red Points, but most are soulless concrete bowls for when County Cricket is played. I'll bet if you ask the Lancs members as to which season they've enjoyed the most it would be when they won the Championship and didn't play one game at Old Trafford as it was being redeveloped. All their games were played at outgrounds, mainly Aigburth.

My two favourite Test grounds in England are Lord's and Trent Bridge. Old Trafford is better than when I first went there 20 years or so ago. Haven't been to the Sussex ground yet so hopefully going this year to watch Worc play. Nicest ground in Australia is Adelaide, although I haven't been to it since it was 'upgraded'. Happy cricket watching this season guys and gals. Hope your respective team's have a good season and that we Pears win Div 2.

www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/47790149This looks like a good move by the ECB for Counties like Worcestershire, Leicestershire and others than often see their best home grown talent snapped up by the bigger, richer Counties.

And no doubt the selectors will continue to overlook the best English batsman of recent years never to get a sniff of a Test call up.......James Hildreth.

If anything, cricket is even more prone than football to big money teams (Surrey, Notts and Yorkshire are probably the worst culprits) hoovering up all the talent.

Start of the 2019 county championship today although not a full opening day fixture list.
One player to look out for this summer, Joe Clarke. 50 on debut today with his new county Notts.

And a Shropshire boy. Unfortunately he probably needed move to Nottsor another bigger county After the unfortunate publicity he attracted in the evidence given at the 1st trial of his team mate Alex Hepburn, it's probably best for all parties concerned that he makes a fresh start elsewhere. www.theguardian.com/sport/2019/jan/11/pair-out-england-lions-tour-alex-hepburn-trial-revelationsThe jury in Hepburn's case was unable to reach a verdict, and his retrial starts on Monday, April 8th.

A welcome break from the utter atrocity that is Brexit. Looking forward to whomever Athers is interviewing this time on the rain interval at the World Cup! I just hope we get some swinging balls and a summer with not much rain on cricket days!
