Seems like they have spread into Enfield tonight, how long will it be before these 'riots' spread into other big cities around the UK?

Seems like they have spread into Enfield tonight, how long will it be before these 'riots' spread into other big cities around the UK? Copycat riots will soon begin popping up all over. The thought of getting a new TV from Currys will be too much of a temptation. The economy is down the sh***er and people haven't got any disposable income, therefore some will see rioting and looting as a way to let off steam and grab a few bargains to boot. Reccession always brings discontent to the masses and now there is twitter etc, the organising of protests is just too easy and the local hotheads will try to turn anything unpleasant into a full blown free for all. Using the death of someone under investigation by the Operation Trident plod as an excuse is pretty thin for the Enfield and Brixton copycats. His family and friends should have let the situation settle for a few days before turning up to protest at Tottenham nick, they have to share some of the blame for these riots IMHO. With the march in Wellington and the counter demo by the multiculturalists there is every chance that something could kick off in Telford over the weekend. I'd have thought that the police would have discouraged the unions from holding a counter demo and just let the EDL have their little stroll down Regent St. and then round them up and ship them them off. Allowing the counter demo is like lighting the blue touch paper. Only problem is the residents of Wellington can't step back from the fireworks.

The EDL won't get anywhere near Regent Street. They have been given a 400 yard circuit to march round comprising Church Street - Market Street - Bridge Road - Queen Street - Church Street. That should be more than enough for the 300 - 400 expected. There'll probably be more at the Unity Rally on the old bus station. Link------> Police Statement

I would have thought he would have taken a few of his chums down there and given them a jolly good talking to.

The sight of politicians sticking their nose in on the streets would just inflame the situation IMO. No, just tell the police to crack down hard on these scumbags like they do anywhere else.

Nasty scenes just in Hackney.
Apparently Boris is on his way back from his hols early!
The Police need to get a grip on this as it is getting well out of hand now.

It's nothing new and social networking isn't to blame. Anyone else remember 1981? Toxteth, St Pauls, Brixton, Handsworth etc etc - the riots went nationwide then with no smart phones or internet. Every night another city seemed to erupt.
I haven't followed this closely but it seems more like criminality than social/political protest. And I don't buy the "hard times" argument for a second. In real hard times, food shops would be looted, not jewellers and electrical stores.
The original protest concerned the shooting of a man who fired at police. I may be critical of the Met but I can't find much sympathy for him and it's a long way from the many legitimate protesters of 1981.
But: High youth unemployment + grim economic outlook + summer = good chance of riots.
Less then 3 weeks to the Notting Hill Carnival, less than a year to the Olympics - Boris, Theresa and Dave should be very worried.

They need to call that demo in telford off now. These riots in London will get other towns and cities doing it. Telford will be ripped to shreads now I feel.

Watching London tonight and in amongst the violence and burning vehicles they showed people looting.
Obviously British people as they were queuing! Who queues during a looting spree?

Can't see there being too much rioting in Edgbaston unless they run out of cucumber sandwiches and sponge cake. Although Christopher Martin Jenkins commenting on rioting might be entertaining on Test Match Special

Plus there is a big West Mids Police training college closeby which could be a target. News is also reporting Cameron is making his wayback to the country for a a Cobra meeting. The scenes in Croydon is like something from the blitz. Mental.

Think the West Midlands police are much better set up for dealing with issues than the met in London.
Some bright spark decided to cut the police intelligence budget in London a couple of years ago and since then we've had the student riots, cut demos and now the riots. Nice move Boris

See the footage of the reporter in Clapham in the middle of the riot/looting? Windows smashed, and he bravley asked them if they thought it was fun (really young kids!) and then seconds later a shout at him and footage cuts out...
Hope hes ok!

Just mob rule isn't it. Violence for violence sake. Its just the sheer brass of those rioting that's the concern. Broad daylight, appearing to have no concern that there will be any repercussions to what they are getting up to. And you do wonder whether the police can cope and can bring these people to justice...
There doesn't seem to be enough police to cope and the rioters know this and are taking full advantage.
Not good at all. Rum.
