I would like to offer my sincere apologies that I dared to offer an opinion regarding Steve Arnold that did not concur with other opinions. Along with the fact that I was perceived to be "sarky" I am ashamed of my inferiority of this thread as I didn't realise I had to be there (shame on all those who commented on events they weren't present at, world war 2 etc).

We are a lower league club with players of a standard who are prone to the odd mistake but who in the main give 100% effort. Cant really ask for much more. Occasionally we will get the likes of Dean Henderson and Ben Godfrey for a short time which is a bonus but then its always going to be difficult for those following on when they've left. Nobody was going to match up to Henderson so poor old Steve Arnold was always going to find it difficult. Nice lad doing a good job behind a struggling defence. Completely disagree. If we are not going to sign one permanently of sufficient standard then at the very least we should expect to attract a young quality keeper on a season long loan in the mould of Button, Daniels, Henderson. If we want to sustain l1 football and improve as per last season it takes more than effort. How exactly do we "sustain" and "improve" with a young keeper here for one season? The keepers you mention were all good for us - as well as inevitably making some costly mistakes - but any improvement they might have made to the team vanished the moment their loan periods expired. You have a strange notion of sustainability.

Similar to the goals at Wycombe - he tends not to bother diving unless the ball is within arms reach. It's one of the stranger traits in his locker. I'm not necessarily saying he should save that (although I don't think it's beyond the realms of possiblity) but to not even attempt to is weird. Sure the former goalkeeper will be along shortly to extole the virtues of him based on a save he only had to make as a result of dropping the ball. Usual crap from someone who thought Beccles was outstanding because for once he didn’t cost us a goal. I would love him to star every week but it won’t happen. Waterfall was outstanding but he gets constant criticism.

'Awful' isn't how I'd describe Arnold or his performances.
Yep has his Weaknesses and limitations like all of our players but after Coleman failed to live up to expectation, he's generally stepped up pretty well.
I'd suggest that SR takes Coyne's views very much into account. The new keepers have clearly been assessed and either they don't offer much more than our current number one or Arnold's performances are deemed good enough by our staff to warrant him keeping his place.
A huge positive is that Arnold is actually contracted to us. We benefit from the experience he has gained this season. Our GK position has been pretty much up for rent to the premiership in recent times. Not too unhappy that this trend has been bucked by one of our own players.

We are never going to agree - I find myself disagreeing with most of your posts, but have the option of reading or ignoring them. I choose to read them. We all have differing opinions on players, that is what makes football tick. I have seen every game bar one since 2003 and countless more in the 50 preceding years, and have seen many gems and donkeys in that time. I want to see every player that pulls on a Town shirt, be successful, but after a dozen games, I normally form an opinion, which is open to change if I see improvement or otherwise. I have a particular interest in keepers and I don’t expect them to be absolute top quality, but the ones that supposedly are, such as our former England No.1 and England U21 player had obvious flaws which can be spotted. No-one is perfect. As for centre backs, we have a player who is slow but outstanding in the air, a captain who again is not quick but reads the game and organises the defence very well. We have a player who is a lot quicker but is subject to poor decision making and is prone to errors and a new young player who lacks experience but has loads of potential. The manager’s nightmare is which of those assets we can do without on a particular match day. Neither of us are likely to change our opinions quickly, but mine could over a period of time, on any player in the squad.

Another batch of ex keepers saving it from their armchairs, SR should have had the hindsight to sub Arnold before this happened, come on Sam you need to get this sorted, buy yourself a B&A crystal ball as they seem to be in abundance. Even winning away at a top side is still not enough for some. Not sure if it is wise to make this comment on Steve Arnold as I expect to be abused and ridiculed by the resident goalkeeping experts on here. This seems to be the stock in trade method of dealing with posters who fail to bow to their superior knowledge. I like Arnold who has done nothing to deserve the o er the top criticism on here by a small number of people. His basic game is very reliable and I am yet to see him make an obvious mistake. He has regularly pulled off some top class saves. His judgement on crosses seems OK to me. He is neither rooted to his line or comes for crosses he cannot get. Cannot say about communication with his defence but he is not obviously talkative. I've seen nothing to suggest his defenders lack confidence in him and it cannot be easy for him to play behind our defence. Last season it was a privilege to have Henderson. Clearly talented but it was his confidence and character that endeared him to us. Thats why we forgave him for the few mistakes he made. McGillivarry would have starred for us given the chance as we were blessed with two quality keepers. Is Arnold that good? I don't know. I do think he is good enough for Tier 3 football. That's my view, a more or less amateur view admittedly but I hope it is fair and reasonable. I am certainly not obsessed with trying to prove I am right because I may have played in goal in the Sunday League which qualifies me as an expert it seems. Obviously my opinion might be wrong about Arnold but at the moment that view is shared by Rickets as it was by Coyne and Askey. Our knowledgeable crowd have also chanted "Stevo,Stevo" from time to time. Not too bad considering we've not had too much to sing about this season. Just my opinion if that is allowed.

100% agree with this. Have seen to several games now this season and while Arnold is far from the best keeper we have had he has done better than I expected since coming into the team at Wimbledon (where I was there and he made a terrific save from a free kick although he was questionable at the cross for the Wombles goal). I think he has done a decent job overall and it seems some are determined to blame him for every single goal that the Shrews concede. No doubt I will get shot to pieces too for venturing such an opinion - but with all the abuse Arnold is getting I feel it is worth putting my head above the parapet to defend him. And I would say that most of the fans sitting near me do not seem unduly alarmed by his being in goal.

We would have gone behind with only minutes left to play, but lo and behold, we went up to the other end and another player who seems disliked by many, Luke Waterfall pops up with the winner from a corner. We seem to not only concede goals from set pieces, but score from them as well.

Surprise, surprise - you have to make a belittling remark about someone defending Arnold. Can't you just let these things go rather than jump on people? No wonder more & more people are reluctant to post on this board. I think having watched the Shrews regularly since 1983, I am entitled to have my opinion. I have also been to several other matches - I solely mentioned the away Wimbledon one as it was Arnold's first game. In actual fact that save from the free kick was one of the best I have seen over the years and it was a far better save than any fault that could possibly be attributed to him for the goal.

Gosh some people on this board get defensive when someone dares have a different opinion.
Why the need to belittle Steve Arnold?
Sad really.
It's only a football message board at the end of the day.

What on earth do you mean I delved into your private life - I assure you I have no interest in that. All I want is to debate football matters. I have no interest whatsoever I assure you in discussing anyone's personal life, political views or anything else non-football. I honestly don't know what caused you to say that - my one remark related to the fact that you seem to have had a go at everyone defending Arnold and I knew a pop at me was coming. And I was proved right. And you cannot deny that you have blamed Arnold for a hatful of goals. Fair enough it is your opinion and of course you are entitled to it - but not one I can share As I said, I have no interest in a slanging match - all I want to do is discuss the football as I care about the Shrews and want the players to do well. Trying though this season has been

Steve Arnold is our player. He is trying to earn a living playing professional football. So he's not as good as Dean Henderson but neither is Waterfall compared to Toto or Norburn compared to Nolan.
If Arnold was dropping clangers each week then he would have been out of the team by now. The management team must have faith in him then to continue to pick him. That's good enough for me.

I was agreeing 100% with his general thread on Arnold - I was not aiming to imply anything personal apart from your tendency to have a pop at anyone defending Arnold. I want to be clear on that I cannot be at the game tomorrow night but I will be at the Wimbledon game on Saturday. Hopefully, we will both be able to celebrate 2 good results by Saturday evening which at the end of the day is what we both most want. And hopefully, we can unite in saying Arnold did well in those 2 games. If he does have a good game, I hope you feel you can praise him for it. I have no doubt if he doesn't, we will hear about it.
