yes i know you are not meant to be on the pitch but it always happens 99% of stewards use common sense and can see its a peaceful pitch invasion and just stand and smile most do the sensible thing and ensure the 2 sets of fans are kept apart but there is always one........ dear o dear ( this doesnt look as bad on the video as it actually was, what right does this prat have to throw this fan over the hoardings straight into another fan who was minding his own business) ?

There was another steward not far from that one who i can only describe as a coward and a bully, The one with a dark baseball cap on, he caught hold of a lad who was no more than 1O yrs old and threw a punch at him and kicked him before throwing him back over the hoardings, Several people witnessed this and went to remonstrate with him, but he slowly dissapeared further away amongst the other stewards, as you quite rightly say Pilch pitch invasions do happen especially at the end of season, and this one seemed friendly enough

That was pretty awful from the steward. Wonder if would have done that to a Port Vale / Hereford fan involved in the trouble we've had last couple of years when the stewards bugger off.

I personally think the stewards were a bit over the top in their approach to people coming on the pitch. I fully appreciate that people shouldnt go on the pitch but it was always going to happen and it was peaceful enough, bit annoyed all the kids went on to shout abuse at the torquay fans when really they should have been clapping them and wishing them luck. Just feel the hired help that were there esp in block 19 were up for something so the pitch invasion was an opportunity to flex their muscles which was totally un-called for. Also I was in 19 it was a bunch of 12 year olds that set the smoke bomb off which was stupid can see alot more searches happening next season

Personally I couldnt see the point in a pitch invasion. If it had been the right result I would have been on there myself.
Although its something that technically we arent allowed to do it I think it should be reserved for when something is actually achieved, ie getting promotion or at least reaching the final.

Agree with that. But there didn't seem to be that much trouble and at the end of the day, if you're going to throw one fan over the hoardings, then surely you should be throwing them all back or the exercise is pointless!?
Did they have new stewards on the west stand last night? I only ask because I think we had ex-West stand stewards on the East Stand.

Some of the stewards were well OTT last night. Saw a couple of fights break out between stewards and fans largely instigated by the stewards who had been ragdolling people who were trying to get on the pitch.

A good proportion of these stewards are just thugs in flourescent jackets. A mate of mine recognised a lot of them from the Telford game last week, so I assume a lot of them were again drifted in from Wolves. Which I guess explains the few occasions when one of them was asked simple questions like 'where are the toilets?' they just shrugged their shoulders and claimed they werent from round here. You have to wonder what would actually happen in the event of an emergency, half these idiots don't know their arse from their elbow.
I think next season it'll only get worse. For all their heavy-handedness and beebop and rocksteady type approach, what powers do they posess? The reason I ask is how the hell can someone who ran on the pitch at Oxford, slotted someone right in the face in full view of cctv and about 7000 other people, be allowed in at the next home game? Its laughable. I've witnessed enough times this season when the stewards do this little comedy sketch where they start by practically grabbing someone by the ears and throw them outside, only to have a quiet word in their ear and then they're let back in within 3 minutes. Half of these people are normally completely innocent I hasten to add, but its like a pantomime or something, what an absolute joke! 'we're gonna kick you out!' 'oh no you're not!' And I think people are starting to get wind of this. People realise that short of throwing an RPG on the pitch, nothing is actually come of it. These mugs are little more than football thugs themselves. Their parents must be proud.

The victim appears remarkably restrained in the circumstances. Surprised that he didn't make more if it.

indeed he was, and you can just hear the voice at the end of the fan who was hit by this fan being forcibly thrown over the hoarding, advising the steward to calm down lets hope that fan was ok or it could have been another ian tomlinson

All fans are aware it is not permitted to go on the pitch, to state the fights as you put it were instigated by the stewards is blinkered. Another poster has stated the red jacket fan again tried to get at the away fans, in veiw of this pratt and others like him I fully understand and support the Clubs stance and the Stewards.

Obviously communication between the stewards was lacking, allowing different stewards to permit different things at the end. Also they were ridiculously slow and blinkered to deal with the South Stand fracas

Mike, some were going on peacefully, some to cause trouble, as a steward you just dont know what any individuals are going to do, so very difficult. Realise this does not meet with your agenda, but that is a fact of life............

Yes very difficult, so you pick random people out and assault them. Totally justifiable.

we all agree going on the pitch was wrong but once so many are on the pitch it sends out the signal to some thats its ok the chap in the video looked like he was going to take the opportunity to soak up a bit of the atmosphere if anything he was heading south
the 2 issues here are, is that steward entitled to basically assault the fan the way he did ?
and more importantly what on earth was he thinking by throwing him straight into another fan who was behind the hoardings minding his own business
the vey same steward proves literally seconds earlier that simply blocking a fan and ordering him back can work
the 2nd incident is nothing less than a double assault

There were a couple of hundred people behind the Steward on the pitch already, some of which had run onto the pitch straight past him. What made him single out this individual for attention?
Are you saying because he thought he would be the major trouble maker ? I'd have gone polar opposite to that.

I am in no way defending or indeed justifying his actions as I was not at that point.
I am also not going to slate them, but to offer an opinion on how difficult it is, We can not be certain of actions prior to that altercation.
If you want my professional opinion on what went on then that is a completely different question, but then I was not the person who had his arse on the line if things went wrong!!

Did wonder why the Torquay fans were in that corner of the north stand. To me, it would have made more sense to have them nearer blocks 1 and 2.
Fortunately, we didn't score, they didn't score, and from a crowd point of view that's probably why we got away with such a bizarre placing of fans.

Mike STFC issue instructions at each game, I assume stopping people getting on the pitch is one of them. This is correct - but I simply cannot understand the mentality of the steward captured on film. Why - when there are hundreds on the pitch - does the jobsworth target a seemingly passive, Boris Johnson-lookalike? The phrase 'spoiling for a fight' comes to mind. Simply unnecessary behaviour regardless of STFC's prematch briefings.

Mind you, I didn't hear anything over the loud speaker about not going on the pitch (like we had v Oxford).

Having had quite a bit of experience in manhandling people in situations where restraint has been needed, we used to team up and take an arm or leg each and were always advised not to tackle people alone unless absolutly nesessary. does anyone know if the same advice is given to the stewards? i assumed it was the reason that they take a little time to deal with trouble as they have to asses the situation and team up before acting.

You really should not have to hear anything over the PA System as it is law under the football offences act

Oh good, but surely they had tickets with seat numbers on them - did we send them that side first?
Yes I know that going on the pitch ain't allowed - but sometimes a reminder over the speaker does make people think before they act.

Whatever the stewards had done in the situation they would have been criticised one way or another.
I personally thought they did a decent job (with the obvious example on this thread excluded)

Most of them are a bunch of muppets.. Yet again trying to go for a beer in the PL after the game whilst the Torquay fans were still inside they stopped town fans (many with small kids) getting in. They resorted to telling blatant lies by saying it was closed. We decided to walk round the back of the pitches and went straight in for a beer. Why oh why cant they just let people go for a beer when there isnt an away fan in sight.

the peaceful pitch invasion didn't stop the lad in the red jacket who got thrown out against oxford trying to get at the away fans again Identified during the mainly peacefully invasion, targeted and arrested so wont be seeing this idiot again hopefully Agree with Pilch re the over zealous steward who stood out from the rest, an STFC steward even intervened BUT it would have only taken a couple of our idiots (and we have enough) to get to the Torquay fans then a bit of retaliation and before you know it a very ugly incident so cant just let all fans do as they want even peacefully due to the morons who attend and spoil it for the majority

I personally thought they did a decent job (with the obvious example on this thread excluded) i agree before kick off my mate asked a steward if he was going to move when the game started, he was immediately aggressive " don't tell me what to do" etc but he did move next to him was a steward who certainly looked like 'not to be messed with' was dressed in black complete with black leather gloves wasnt sure if it was bodie or doyle but he was spot on, vanished out of site when there was nothing to do and when fans got a bit heated with players or the ref and left their seats he appeared and gave a stern order from a distance which always worked
