Ok, discuss. Why does he want to leave Manchester United? Good money and adored by the fans (even though he is a scouser ) Is this an ultimatum from Coleen in order to go abroad ala Beckhams?

Or it could be the best thing he could do. Once you cross Taggart, the only way is out. Recent performances would suggest that they are on the wane, and with some of their better players nearing the end ( Giggs, Scholes, Neville, van der Sar ), a major rebuilding job is needed. Stories in some papers suggest that a FIFA loop-hole, may allow Rooney to leave for £5million, thus leaving Fergie with extremely limited funds to start a new team. It is just a hunch, but I would not be surprised to see him say "sod it", and sail off into the sunset.

Could be good for him and good for England...
Clearly hes lost it a bit over the last year, on and off the field, the move may spark him back into life, as now this has come out, hes either not going to play 100% or get grief from United fans (just look at the reaction on there messageboards!!! I just did!)
Add to that, a malaise around United that only not been made to be the big story of this season in the prem thanks to the shambles at Liverpool.... you have to fancy the long terms prospects of winning things at Madrid, Barca, or Even City and Chelsea than them at the moment as he enters the peak of his carrer...
He will go, and with Giggs, Scholes, Edwin VDS all retireing at the end of the season I belive, and the revelations about Uniteds debt last week, the question opens up into the future for United as a whole... personally I think if they could get 50Mill at Christmas, it would help the club a mile more than a not fully motivated Rooney ambleing around untill the summer!

Very interesting video interview with Ferguson to the press up on bbc now – it’s 6.30minutes long, and throughout ferguson looks and sounds totally confused by why rooney’s behaviour and motives for leaving news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/m/man_utd/9104392.stmI was thinking after the weekend that united are starting to look very vulnerable, but didn’t see this coming

This Rooney situation is just another sad example of the role that agents play. Sir Alex is clearly unhappy with the way in which players/agents conduct negotiations nowadays.
We see this at League 2 level too with the likes of Zola and Wroe.

Money is now the number 1 important thing to players

This really good be a seminal moment where Utd's dominance comes to an end and City take their place. Who could have predicted that a few seasons ago?

Do you think they might do what Leeds did? The time of the big 4 ends when Rooney leaves and if the Glazers still keep running the place when Fergie retires I can see them slipping down the table too. No club is immune to relegation. It just takes one bad season

It just takes one bad season Leeds weren't getting 75,000 every home game, totally different ball game on the revenues front. And also wishful thinking that Rooney is the 'only' player who keeps United going, on this seasons form Ferguson will do well to get rid IMHO

Onward and upward, just one player & just one club.

Hardly surprising he's not played well- he carried the team last season. They chose to inject his injured ankle instead of giving him time to rest, played him against Bayern Munich and it backfired. Would suit English players like Rooney and Gerrard to go to Spain on Italy if just to give their bodies a rest.

Funny how Fergie seems "bemused", when player's heads get turned by money. He was one of the prime movers in persuading players to renege on their contracts with other clubs, by offering them mega-bucks to move. No sympathy from me, and the sooner the Big 4 (or whatever number it is now), hit hard times, the better for English football in general. Oh for a return to the days when clubs like Villa, Derby and Forest could win the top league, simply by building better teams than their competitors.

Rooney is no miss at the moment, but his lack of replacement will be. The £30mil they may just about be able to raise can join Ronaldo's £80mil, in the bank ready and waiting to be spent on players (yeah right Gill and Fergie, we all believe that). Berbatov, Macheda and Hernandez. OK players, but it's a sign of the times for Man Utd. They're on the wane, and Rooney going might just be the tip of the iceberg for them. I feel it'll be a long road back for them if this all progresses as I see it going.

I suspect there's a bit of wishful thinking on some fans of other Premiership clubs who say its the start of Man Utd's decline.
People have said for years that Utd are on the decline when the likes of Beckham, Keane, Ince, Ronaldo, Van Nistelrooy, Schmeichal, Stam etc have left the club but they have consistently moved on, recovered and carried on challenging. And of course the same was said when the Glazers over.
Theres no denying that they will be in transition as the likes of Giggs, Scholes, Neville & Van Der Saar come to the end of their careers but they still have enough financial clout to make sure they will be challenging in my opinion. Plus Fergies buying up younger players so is already priming the replacements. I think the time when Utd may start to fall off their perch is when Fergie goes as his replacement is on a hiding to nothing really.
As for Rooney, you obviously dont know what goes on behind closed doors but I dont think he has come out of the situation well so far. He has had a torrid affair on and off the field but everyone at Man Utd has stood by him and this is the thanks he gives them.
Personally my estimation of the man went down when he started criticising England fans loyalty which is the biggest laugh ever from Mr "Once a Blue, Always a Blue".

Rough justice. Rooney leaves Everton, the team that had nurtured him during his learning years, and signs for United. He now decides he wants to leave, to everyone's astonishment, including the father figure Ferguson. Wether he has seen into the future and realised that the current team is not going to win the League/trophies he wants, or it is pressure from his wife, we won't know until the dust has settled. He may go abroad if a top class team can afford him, but there is not the money about that there was, so it seems likely a Premier league club will come in for him. To go to City will heap more vitriol on him than he has ever known, surely not! Chelsea maybe, but i think he will find it hard to settle down South, and Colleen will have to keep a close watch on him. Terry, Cole and Rooney on a night out...... please god make it happen. No, i think he will stay in the area, and who has acquired a new Chairman with a bit of spare cash? Rooney will wear the red again, oh yes. Can you guess who it will be yet. Genius. I'm luvvin every moment of this sorry saga.

United are using him for their own gain - not particulary being loyal. On a seperate note i feel everything has gone to his head a little and he seems a little overweight for me.

In AF's interview he said he was told on August 14th that Rooney would not be signing a new contract, presuming that this had been decided by the player/agent some time earlier perhaps this ongoing situation had something to do with his form at the World Cup and his form since for club and country. There is so much cash available in some clubs at present that it could well be an agent could be persuaded to unsettle his "client" in favour of another employer, just a few weeks ago Rooney said he wanted to stay at MUFC for life, why the sudden change of mind ? WR also said he has had no ankle injury this season but he seems to have been feeling his ankle or limping because of it, my guess is that he has been got at either directly or indirectlyand this is an excuse to throw blame on the club for his sudden decision. Someone said earlier he had been tapped by MU whilst at Everton, I don't pretend to know if this is correct or not (perhaps the poster can give us details) but I seem to remember MU made a sudden move because WR was in talks with Newcastle.
