Was a time when i would have been awe inspired and felt blessed that the Pope was in our country, unfortunately over the past 5 years or so, the awe has turned into a sickening sense of shame and anger.
Realising that the catholic church doesnt represent what i thought it did when i was growing up has made me think a lot about my faith, and i now feel the church gets in the way of my God rather than bringing us closer.
The appalling silence and lack of action over the apparent epidemic of child molesting amongst priests all over the world is chilling and speaks volumes about an organisation who seem more interested in sweeping their sins under the carpet and maintaning their lifestyle and status, than confessing and dealing with them.
I feel closer to God than i ever have, but nowadays feel its better to talk direct rather than via the call centre.

I have no respect for a man (or religion) that is against:
-homosexuality -the use of condoms to reduce the spread of HIV -the promotion of female members in their religion
Reading some of the comments made by the Pope/his advisors make you feel like we're still in the dark ages.

Edinburgh Lady tweets: "I'm really shocked at the lack of crowds either supporting or protesting the visit of Pope Benedict XVI in Edinburgh!"
BBC Pictures show a different view?
It amazes me after all that has gone on with all the child abuse allegations and no apology from the Pope that so many Catholic's still support him?

as a Christian, but not a catholic, I'm not really bothered but what i do object to is when people talk about having faith in the Pope or the Catholic church. People's faith should be in Christ, not the Pope.

I shouldn't care, but I do.
I care about what Loyalshrew wrote up thread.
I care about the comments made by Cardinal Walter Kasper. (I love the fact that he has gout, a condition associated with gluttony and the dark ages).
I also care about the fact that £12 million of the £20 million total cost is from our tax payers money. The RC church should have paid it all.
Apart from that I don't give a t0ss.

As per Nicko
Why on earth is the church not paying for this??
Why are people making such a fuss over an old man elected by other old men? He has no grip or sense of what goes on in the world. He could be senile!
And of course it's so vital that he comes to visit us all.
Just think what the cost of this could have been spent on?

People's faith should be in Christ, not the Pope. I agree with that 100% I find the media attention a bit weird to be honest. A mixture of undeserved adulation and undeserved insults. People are hyping it both ways. I can't understand why it is a state visit.

As well as the above issues with child abuse, homosexuality, promoting unprotected sex and subsequently the spread of HIV etc I also think that he has no right to 'warn' us about being a secular country. If Christianity becomes marginalised in this country then that is the peoples will.

"I can't understand why it is a state visit"
Because Vatican City is a state, and The Pope is the head of that state.... I think that is right anyway.

Ok got it.....
It is also the first to be designated a state visit because the Pope has been invited by the Queen rather than the church....

Ok got it..... It is also the first to be designated a state visit because the Pope has been invited by the Queen rather than the church.... Stephen Fry puts it much better than I could: "It hasn’t happened before and the Vatican is in no real sense a nation state. Visit the place: it takes fifty minutes to walk round. You don’t need a passport or visa to enter. It is a curlicue of history that makes this “absolute monarchy” (to quote the Holy See’s own website) a “country”. Under no reasonable or worthwhile definition does the Vatican match up to the old-established and widely accepted Montevideo protocols on statehood. So by all means come, but please don’t ask the British taxpayer...to help foot the bill."

A shameful day in British history. This man has been instrumental in the cover-up of paedophile activity by refusing to let the police see the records of offending clergy. If he wants to come to the UK, then let the Catholic Church pay for it.
This country could have taken a serious moral stance here by refusing to sanction the visit unless/until the Vatican assisted the police but instead has rolled out the red carpet.
His bigotry has also directly contributed to the deaths of thousands and thousands of people in the developing world through HIV-AIDS and should be strongly opposed. We wouldn't treat Mugabe to a State visit so why should the Pope be any different?

I can't understand atheists like Fry who get hot and bothered about religion. If you are an atheist then your non-belief in God be should as much a part of your life as your non-belief in unicorns or fairies at the bottom of the garden. Chill.

Taking aside all of the current issues regarding the Catholic church (not easy I know!), the biggest thing for me is why are we expected to contribute towards the bill for this.
I understand that its a very big deal to Catholics (and no doubt non-Catholics too) and if they want to celebrate the fact he's here then I really havent got a problem with that. But they should have to pay for the inconvenience of him disrupting millions of other peoples lives.
The media bias is pathetic on both sides. If you listened to it, its either a brilliant, succesful occasion which everyone in Britain is loving or a national disgrace with shockingly low turn-outs. In reality you probably have a minority of people who are all for it, a minority who are against it and the vast majority who simply dont care.

I love the fact that it was HRH Prince Phillip who welcomed him on the tarmac at Edinburgh airport...wonder if they both addressed each other in their mother tongue ? I also thought it would have been more appropriate if a detachment from a Bavarian infantry regiment had been the guard of honour rather than scottish soldiers.
Anyway, back to the question. He does not represent anything i would want to associate myself with in the 21st century so no, I am not bothered by his visit.

No-one is questioning people rights to have faith in a god, it is what is done in that god's name.
