One minute a normal bloke, next minute a few old people vote for you and you suddenly become God's voice on earth. What a crock. **rolls eyes**

@onthetrain Does that include item 1? I suppose we would be more civilised if we were married before we had sex, TV and the internet has created a perverse society. If you back to teh 1970's you would be outcasted having children before marriage in some comunities but now its excepted. I have however broke this rule many times and have 3 kids and still not married.

What bothers me is that its being treated like some pop band tour.
Also the fact that catholics seem to be worshiping him more then they do god.
Oh and not to mention why on earth should us tax payers pay for his visit?

why does matron start a thread about the Pope on a football site ?? let me explain. take a look at the statistics. there have been 67 comments made over 3 pages on the pope thread. thats more than any other topic on the front page including the post match discussion "just back" thread. so the answer to your question is simple, its because the forum members are interested in other things than football and shrewsbury town. its also worth pointing out that Hoover has 2 threads on the front page, one about george michael (47 posts) and one about the police (not footy policing) (13 posts), and windsor jnr has one about 9/11 which has attracted 46 posts. i note you havent posted criticising them? is this personal perhaps? if it is stop being a coward posting behind a different name. step up and discuss it. also, of your last 10 posts only 3 have been about football, the other 7 have been moaning about people discussing things other than football finally, if you dont like it, then tough tittys. when the mods change the rules banning any discussion without a direct link to football, specifically stfc, then i will stop any OT threads, until then, why not sod off eh?

I can't understand atheists like Fry who get hot and bothered about religion. If you are an atheist then your non-belief in God be should as much a part of your life as your non-belief in unicorns or fairies at the bottom of the garden. Chill. No-one is questioning people rights to have faith in a god, it is what is done in that god's name. Exactly. People who believe in fairies and unicorns don't abuse other believer's faith for money/power etc, among other things. Belief in fairies and unicorns doesn't affect me in any way. On the other hand, catholocism has just cost me (well, us) millions. Yes, there are other, larger, wastes of taxpayer's money, but that doesn't excuse this one. The catholic church isn't short of money; ok, this is a state visit not a religious visit, but the "state" only exists as a religious organisation. Everyone uses/needs the police, fire service, NHS, roads, directly or indirectly. Religion is a choice. You want it, you pay for it. Also, people that believe in uncorns don't come around telling me i should to and that i'm morally empty if i don't. Mankind is more than capable of morality without organised religion, and as the world as a whole becomes more educated, the need for it decreases. It served a purpose and is becoming redundant - that's not to say it was ever inherently a bad thing, but it's been used by those willing and able to exploit it for centuries as a tool to further their own agendas (and historically, religious belief is VERY easy to exploit). p.s. to the person moaning about our "independant" nuclear " deterrent"... Yes it costs some money, but that amount pales in comparison to the amount we pay out to benefit frauds and work shy scumbags who live in better conditions than i do having worked every week since i was 14. Please, name one benefit that giving money to these people brings. On the other hand... western nuclear power now goes a long way to stabilising many regions across the world, actually preventing proliferation by many countries. Consider that Japan, of all countries, is considering a nuclear weapons programme now that the US UK and Russia are scaling down their stocks while places like Korea, India, Pakistan etc (those not on 'our' side in many ways) are set on increasing theirs. We all know we have enough weapons globally to wipe us out many times over, but the point is that the masses, who arent privvy to the same understanding or information that their leaders might be, are scared of a country like Korea on their doorstep flexing their nuclear muscles. Up until now they have sat under the umbrella of NATO protection, which they now perceive to be weakening. Does it sound like a good thing for Japan to make some weapons of their own? Or any more countries than already are? Notice any similarities to 1944 onwards? So, " deterrent"? Yes, actually. Oh and if you're referring to "independant" as a snide remark about how very little of the missile/warhead itself it British made, rather than just bought off the americans, I should tell you that it actually refers to our ability to use it without permission from or consultation with the US, if we need to. Sorry for the off topic rant, but some people need to realise we don't just have nukes for fun

I found it a bit of a guilty pleasure watching the Pope pontificating from his pontoon Popemobile, which isn't what I expected when the much anticipated papal visit was given the green light to proceed.
In stark contrast, if my memory serves me correctly John Paul was a bit of a party pooper when parading around in his role as pontiff.

matron, your making this personal,i merely pointed out the pope has nothing to do with stfc -that makes me a whining 2 year old , i come on the site to read threads about the club .religion and politics NO . so what the hell is stopping you reading threads about the club? and yes i do think you're like a whining 2 year old. The thread title is The Popes Visit, how much clearer does it need to be that this thread is not about stfc? You have to make a physical and mental decision to view it. it didnt jump out at you, it didnt spring up like spam when you clicked on another thread. you chose to view it and now you have the front to whine about it being there. fortunately, you are vastly outnumbered on this board by people who either do like discussing other issues not related to the club or have the brains to be able to navigate safely away from topics they have no interest in.
