I thought we showed a bit of an improvement but clearly have issues.
Savin - 6 - looked reasonably assured but we need to work on distribution. Hoole - 3 - really poor in the first half and not much better in the second; too easily turned and weak in the challenge Feeney - 6 - played well; glad to have him back, had to cover for both Pierre and Hoole Pierre - 5 - looked reasonably solid and unfair to blame him for both goals - hesitated when he could have hoofed it yes, but would probably have rebounded in - that suicidal passing at the back he was not the worst to blame and you could see it coming a mile off Benning - 4 - not his best came and was exposed by the runner quite a few times Winchester - 5 - did ok; bit of a worry in that it looked like his left leg / groin again Perry - 6 - did really well in closing down and made his presence felt - much less of a headless chicken compared to last year Bloxham - 5 - played ok and looked dangerous at times, faded a bit but not as bad as in previous games. Castledine - 6 - shame he couldn’t nab a goal in the first half, closed down well and clearly has something about him; needs to get used to having less space to play. Sagoe - 8 - I thought he was brilliant tonight; closed down and won the ball so many times and when he got it he ran at people and looked really dangerous Marquis - 6 - did ok and tried hard with little service - I like his niggling the defenders but he seldom gets the free kicks he should
Biggins - 4 - at fault at the start of the build up for their goal; doesn’t make the right decisions either defensively or offensively. A couple of decent flick ons didn’t make up for what was basically a hole in the midfield - Shipley would have been a much better replacement for Winchester Nurse - glad to see him back, looked a threat going forward and managed a horrendous cross the back line ball to Hoole to keep him awake. O’reilly - too late to make a difference - had a couple of shots and moments but the game was over Shipley - got stuck in but the game was over Lloyd - no impact and clearly not a lone striker

13 goals against in 6.....we have to have a return to the 3-5-2 formation immediately. Far too weak defensively to cope again in any game. Bolton should have scored eight or nine.
Marquis looks completely lost up front on his own and clearly needs someone up front with him.
Just have to get a result on Saturday.

Savin 6
Hoole 4 Feeney 5 Pierre 4 Benning 3
Winchester 5 Perry 6 Bloxham 4 Castledine 5 Sagoe Jr 6
Marquis 5
Nobody comes out of it with any credit, but Savin, Perry and Sagoe Jr all had their moments.

I think people need to stop excusing dog s*** performances by saying there are positive moments. I'll accept last week against Huddersfield away as we were hardly going to get anything from the game but didn't get spanked. So far we've played 6 games so far, won 1 (even in that game we were 2-0 down at halftime), lost 5, scored only once in the league (which was a screamer from long range) and conceded 13 goals (over 2 a game on average!) Scrapping around looking for excuses and the two moments in a game where a half decent ball is played into a box or we string four positive passes together shows how dog s*** we've been all year and also how some of us are willing to accept performances like tonight on the pitch. One or two flashes in a game is the bare minimum I'd expect in a game we are expected to lose. I'd also expect us to have a defence capable of looking like gaining a clean sheet instead of running at a snails pace, hoofing the ball and making mistake after mistake. Hurst was right a few interviews back when he said we had tolerant and nice fans, other clubs would be toxic as anything right now. Toto needs dropping. Pierre needs dropping. Bloxham needs dropping. We aren't even in September and I want the season over already. toto was dropped, tonight was down to the tactics again, sitting back, leaving wide men to have the ball and then backing off them, we were lucky to get away with 2 or 3 more goals on saturday, it could have been 7 tonight without the need to exaggerate, most fans thought tom was very poor on saturday and yet he started again tonight, Marquis on his own up front isn't working, he needs a man playing off him and yet hurst wont even try it even mid game when its already lost, hursthas already given up on playing it out from the back just like Taylor did about 3 games in last season, the manager with an abysmal last 6 seasons in the EFL now has 13 games on the ruin in all comps without a win, you used to create polls for managers with stats nowhere near as bad as that , why is that ? is it anything to do with you shouting for hursts return time and time again ?

Disappointing to see the manager getting blame so early in the season.
I wouldn't be surprised to see a centre back appear before the deadline.

They haven't recruited for that shape at all though and you miss out most of the more exciting players and replace them with unperforming ones. Back 5 of Hoole - Feeney - Nsiala - Pierre - Benning is depressing to even write. No role for Sagoe and would find it very hard to play both O'Reilly and Castledine

Truly feels like "end game" merely six games into the season
Of the top 10 worst players I've ever seen pull on a Town shirt I think Aaron Pierre now occupies two places. His performance and general lack of effort tonight brought back all the painful memories of the 5-1 at Peterborough in Ricketts' last game.
More worrying than that was a desperate lack of leadership on the pitch. Did anyone see who was given the armband when Winchester went off?
No words of encouragement, no 'keep your chin up' to Pierre or any of the others who had a shocking night. A notable mention to Bloxham who after 100+ appearances still hasn't convinced me there's a player in there.
The loanees look as you'd expect players from the top academies in the country to look like and were a class above any other blue shirt on the pitch, but we're probably only a couple of defeats away from desperate SOS calls to parent clubs citing dubious injuries to get out the place.
Two massive games coming up. Two defeats is unfathomable yet highly likely.
What a sh*tshow we are right now

Neither fullback looks up to the required standard and I would hope to see Nurse start on Saturday. We haven’t had a right back for more than a year and it looks like we still haven’t got one.

You can bring in all the kids on loan you like O Reilly, Castleside, Sagoe, Feeney but if there isn't some experience in there it's going to quickly come apart.

You have to ask where the money has gone. All big earners other than Shipley are off the books, we had a a fee for Sraha, and none of this season’s signings are on anything north of £3k. So how on earth isn’t there enough money in the budget for a few more signings? Bizarre and concerning.

Definitely. May be a season too far for Mal defensively - its when not if Nurse takes over. And Hoole's first half hour was one of the worst performances I've ever seen from a Town footballer. Feeney back there soon perhaps. It's still early but I thought the out of possession attitude and work rate wasn't great second half either.

Would Nurse and Winchester be on 'Big Money' as well, possibly Marquis and Savin have been enticed on good contracts as well.
The other side of the coin - the loans may not be costing much at all. - 4 out of 5 at least are academy players on smaller wages where Town would only look to contribute a percentage.
A small squad with the injury record of Nurse, Rossiter, Kayode, Savin, with the likes of Bloxham and Pierre, Shipley who is Mr 33% When he wants to and Perry (who to be fair is doing much better).
Its a recipe for disaster.

Winchester and Feeney have already been injured and are needed in their primary positions.

But if you put Feeney at RB then you've got Nsiala and Pierre in the centre until such time as the other Feeney recovers. We need to bring someone in that can operate at either RB or CH, like James Bolton used to do.

I guess we still having to pay off the guys you wanted sacked last year , the ones who did a better job than hurst , I did say once sacking a manager can lead to financial problems and cut backs , by the way the club is for sale , would you buy it if you had £10m ps The money hasn't gone anywhere , I guess the chairman isn't putting his hand in his pocket each month for find £100k , mainly because he wants out and any money he puts in isn't going to add any value to the club , and he isn't going to get it back I don't blame him , he's running the club sustainably again and if that means we go down then that's the new owners problem ,

So how on earth isn’t there enough money in the budget for a few more signings? Bizarre and concerning. I think the answer is more straightforward than people think. Roland set a budget every season which hasn't increased really over the last decade and we've finished in the bottom half nearly every year in a relegation scrap. Every year the division has become more competitive and tougher as Championship teams have dropped down but not automatically gone back up. This year is different however because we've had teams come up that are more competitive and unlikely to go down and be in that pool of relegation candidates with us (ie Wrexham and Stockport). Under Askey and Ricketts Roland got his balance of payments. Steve came in to the club and kept us up in his first season. Brian and Steve quickly realised that the budget set was uncompetitive in the division and overspent, against what Roland established we could afford. In the end in January Roland and Steve have had a huge falling out, probably because Steve knew the amount it would take to reach the playoffs in his last season and wanted Roland to fund 3 more players for that push. Roland was unhappy about the overspending and having his ego challenged. We finished 12th under Steve with a competitive budget for the division, much higher than the one Roland set at the start of the season. Last season Moore cleared as much of the ship as he could with many of the established League 1 players in the team on higher wages than we could afford and they knew they were going to be uncompetitive once they saw how dreadful Taylor and Bignot were as a management team. Leahy was sold and the money probably covered a portion of Flannagan, Marosi, Bayliss; wages for the year but realistically the budget was higher by legacy of those contracts. Those players in the second half of the season downed tools once they realised they were unlikely to get another contract here and wanted to protect themselves on the way out. This season there is no legacy in the budget other than Shipley, who I'd imagine Moore would love to shift given his wages are likely to be high, but given how he plays well once every five games its unlikely he's got a row of suitors lining up. This season's budget is the norm and the standard for what Roland wants. Steve and Brian delayed the relegation we'll experience this year by three years by overspending and creating a 'competitive' league one budget. We do not have a competitive budget this year, and Roland putting in 500k once in a decade to "bail us out" hardly means that Steve and Brian bankrupted the club during their tenure. I don't blame Hurst for this mess, I blame Roland.

Sagoe Jnr played well and that’s about it. Thoroughly outclassed and shipped two of the worst goals you’re ever likely to see.
Castledine had incredibly rare moments of good, and not a lot else but I think he, O’Reilly and Sagoe Jnr are going to be heavily relied on to give us any kind of fighting chance.
I still think, and hope, fixtures against teams much nearer our stature might prove wrong the complete writing off of our season, because P’boro, Huddersfield and Bolton is a heavyweight start, but ultimately I think like many others that we are absolutely destined for the drop, and felt that way before a competitive ball was even kicked.
We are a dead club at this level I’m afraid.
Shoutout to Hoole, for managing worst player of the match when 2 of the other 3 at the back with him were directly responsible for the goals. Some feat that.

They didn't spend millions, they spent a competitive league one budget which required a one off injection of 500k to correct which some teams in this division spend on a single player. Last year you wouldn't say a word against Taylor or Moore, and arguably they had better players at his disposal than this year, particularly in defence.

Like most fans I eagerly await team news an hour before kick off and see how close the actual team is to what I hoped to see. At 2pm at Huddersfield I was reasonably happy looking down the list but was surprised to see Tom Bloxham in the starting eleven but accepted that we back the managers opinion until the game progresses. We sit in the car afterwards and chew the fat and assess each player’s performance. On to the next game and the same process begins as it did tonight. I said I was surprised on Saturday so tonight I was absolutely astounded. What is he offering to keep getting a starting berth? I am not blaming him for tonight’s result - other players that I feel should not be getting starts can carry the can for that but I am not so surprised to see them as they are picked in their preferred position. TB doesn’t seem to have such a position but somehow gets fitted in. I hope that Saturday sees that change. I hope Nurse comes in but whether that will be lest Centreback or left back is anyone’s guess as both positions are woefully served at present.

Good post Scarecrow I agree with the majority. £500k in a decade ? Roland has put £2m in to pay wages since January 23 , money he will never get back a new owner isn't going to be interested until roland stops doing that and instead builds up a big debt & puts the club into admin , Only then comes along the next guy , pays off the 25p in the pound to clear the admin , at this point football Is relevant
