Re triallists, a report of a 1-0 win in a friendly Altrincham played on Saturday states that their goal was scored by triallist A and triallist B made a double penalty save.

That could be the case with Towns report on Saturday.

Fred Davies won the league with trialists!!πππ€«ππ Think 3 of them were only signed on the Wednesday and Friday before the season opener on the Saturday. Withe, Hockaday (Weds) and Wayne Clarke (Fri). Patterson had been signed a bit earlier. No wonder we had a slow start.

The Fred Davies season was a different era unfortunately.
Premier League Clubs generally hog all the talent nowadays.

Not a problem per se that triallists are used, just frustrating that it looks like the first 4-5 matches of the season will essentially still also be pre season as squad wont be properly assembled until September. Not sure I expected any different though! Also although I know you aren't making the comparison, one would hope the contractual and squad building wouldn't be comparable between a national league side and a league one side...

Unfortunately the games in August are now usually short of whoever we take on loan from Premier teams. Been like it for a few seasons now. But we are not alone with that.

11 days since our last signing. 6 days until our first friendly. A squad of 12. Itβs going wellβ¦ I hear 1 or 2 this week

And thus perhaps we should change our way of doing things. I find it strange how weβve almost sacked off the first 4-5 games of the season as we await PL loanees to arrive but then weβd never consider easing off come the last 4-5 games of the season.
Strange ethos for me. Iβd be much happier if we swerved the PL loans in order to get ourselves ready and fit.
Then I guess weβd miss out on the likes on Hurstβs last PL loan success.

The problem is the transfer window , what purpose does it actually serve to lower league clubs apart from a hinderance ?, it wouldn't be so bad if the window closed before the season started

To be fair, according to transfermarkt.co.uk, thereβs only been 9 loan signings made across the whole of league one so far.
That doesnβt excuse only having 12 permanent players on the books though, as even if we have a full loan quota we still canβt fill the bench.

It simply appealed to my sense of humour, no names mentioned in the report or any hint they would be signed despite their success.

I've had similar concerns at the start of the last few seasons. Doubt it will affect us this season but you can quite easily put yourself only into the play offs rather than the automatic by not having your team up and running till you've played about 6-8 games.

Carlisle have picked up Archie Davies from Dundalk. He's a Right back, so wonder if he was on towns radar given he's been in a position of need and was playing in Ireland.
Rumours have dried up a bit of late.
But I guess I presume they have a list of loan players they are targeting who they hope will be first team players.
So in reality maybe there aren't that many more permanent signings to come. 3 or 4 maybe and possibly they will be mostly cheap ones who are squad filler, on bench or injury back up rather than first team XI.
And the waiting game will be end of the August for those loan players.

Wonder if he's got 4 or 5 team mates that he wants to bring along with him!

Will need some permanent ones as well, loans have a habit of either being hit and miss, plus recalled in January.
Perhaps some of the trialists will be made permanent. Still a second gk and right back worries me.

I would say again, I'd give Elliot Bennett another year if he would come for the right money.

Elliot Bennett would be a great player to have in the squad. He isn't going to last a full game but quality guaranteed if we need him to come on.
