Before yesterday's Cup Final, I was confident that, at last, we would win this tournament, given the array of attacking talent available to Gareth Southgate, but now I am less convinced: the City team oozed with all the skill and talent one could ask for, and yet United proved that hard work and good organisation can succeed when executed fully. Of course this has been true, down the years, but the occasional reminder dies no harm - we, above all should know this - our previous Hurst incarnation was not exactly like 1970 Brazil, but good lord, was it effective! I thought the same. Do we expect to much from Foden? However, I would say that players like Bellingham, Walker and Kane are on another level and if they play well we should have a good tournament, despite our central defensive shortcomings. That said, always one team that come from nowhere and provide a scare, fancy ze Germans on home soil to surprise a few. Can never write off the Italians and we know France always turn up.

I'm not sure I agree with that. Mainoo was outstanding. Southgate's teams have always been dull and effective.

For me
Pickford
Walker, Stones, Maguire, Shaw (please let him be fit)
Mainoo, Rice
Saka, Bellingham, Foden
Kane
Palmer is sub for any of the middle 3.

Just the final midfield slot up for grabs. But I think this is the team they'd look to for the knockouts. The team for the group games i think will change around a fair bit - will likely see Trippier, Gallagher, Trent AA, Gomez, Watkins, Gordon etc all featuring beyond those 12 you selected. Group games are almost trials for the later games with likely 3 out 4 teams going through. With that, points being dropped in the group games might not be a huge concern. Tournament will get going when the knockouts come and some actual jeopardy comes into place for most and think that will be reflected in the XIs chosen

My only issue really is our reliance on Kane and everything geared up to providing him with chances. Against lesser opponents those tactics have been shown to be damn near infallible, but it seems as though the better teams know how to nullify those tactics. The same thing happened at Spurs and again this season at Bayern. Many of the goals he scored were against teams that Bayern always or at least usually beat, but the better teams and even some of the lower mid table teams worked them out and exploited the weaknesses that relying on Kane brings.
I'm not saying that Southgate should drop him, because he is without doubt a world class striker, but the tactics need to be more flexible and if it isn't working for Kane he shouldn't be afraid to substitute him. Look back to South Africa when the ball was literally bouncing off Rooney, but he couldn't be subbed off no matter how little his impact was. No player is bigger than the team.
Actually I lied, there is another issue. Harry Maguire. Firstly his fitness is questionable, but more importantly his form has been at best sporadic for the last two seasons at least.

For these Euros I was adopting a new method of predicting the winners and top scorer - the panini method - however the packet of stickers I bought (first in years, takes me back) has Switzerland winning and Balde the spanish left back as top scorer, which may be possible as he has unique capabilities according to wikipedia --- "In Thursday, January 24, 2024 he suffered a Hamstring injury in his right foot,"

I'd rather have world class players we rely on.
France need Mbappe.
Argentina need Messi.
We need Kane.
I'm happy with that. And I can't believe we've got Bellingham in the same era. That two generational talents overlapping in a generation.

That two generational talents overlapping in a generation. That front four is ridiculous really. 114 goals between them last season. Saka is the lowest and he still got 20. And that's all at pretty elite clubs, who finished in the top 2 of the best 3 leagues in the world. England go into the tournament as favourites for a very good reason

A neighbours just given me a ‘full’ 1980 album cos he knows I follow Shrewsbury and it includes us in the Second Division. Graham Turner Ken Mulhearn, Trevor Jones, Jake King, Colin Griffin, Carl Leonard, John Keay, Steve Cross (the legend that is) Jimmy Lindsey, David Tong, Trevor Birch, Steve Biggins. Never collected them so never realised we’d ever been in it. If you or anyone wants it you can have it …… just pm me.

At least a passionate defence of Kane or something along the lines of 'you can only beat what's in front of you'. As I said earlier in the thread Kane is a world class striker and probably undroppable, but he needs to up his game against better opposition. Just my opinion and we'll have to agree to differ.

In 3 games he was in the starting line up and was subbed off. In the other 7 games he actually played for around 2 hours in total, in one game he came on in the 92nd minute. I don't know how many times I have to repeat myself, but I agree that Kane should obviously be first choice. However sometimes the best and most obvious choice for striker isn't going to click on the day or the opposition double on them or even that he needs a break. Occasionally he should start on the bench. If the opposition have been holding out for 70 minutes and suddenly see Kane getting ready to come on they are going to get concerned.

Of course kane is a good player.....so in these euros,I want him to step up to the plate,in the big games that counts.but Southgate should rest him in some of the games, and put Watkins in....what if kane gets injured???what then?
