I suppose the only other easier draw would have been Borsovia.

Oblak - top keeper (although I'm happy for United to continue with Onana, so no killing necessary, and anyway I prefer Mamadashvili of Georgia). Also Sesko, who lots of top PL clubs (Arsenal, Chelsea, United) were interested in till he signed a new contract at Leipzig. Slovenia aren't nobodies, but they are ranked 57th (behind Iraq, Jamaica, Qatar and Panama, for example) compared to England's 3rd. In English club terms it's equivalent to Liverpool drawing with Exeter City. Worth adding to that Denmark are 21st and Serbia 32nd, it was such a low quality group as also evidenced by the games not involving England being equally dross. Hoping that we were simply dragged down to their level and that we’ll raise our game when required, but can’t say I’m feeling at all optimistic. It's also worth noting that fifa ranking are less reliable than Russell grants horoscopes or old moores almanac , if anyone even dares to doubt that go and take at look at the fifa rankings before replying inside.fifa.com/fifa-world-ranking/men

Denmark, Serbia and Slovenia should all be in the top ten. Two goals scored (both from deflected assists) and five points was a mighty achievement.

It'll be Slovakia unless Portugal pull 2 goals back now. Also what a player Kvaratskhelia is. Glorious. He's just a joy to watch. That jinking run inside his own half where he beat about 6 Portuguese players was just magical. I love Mamardashvili in goal too. His first save from Dalot was the best I've seen in the tournament so far. It would have been one of the goals of the tournament too. I'm sure the "big" teams will wake up for the knockouts, because only Spain have really got going properly so far, but Georgia and Austria have been far and away the teams I've most enjoyed watching so far.

Interesting and somewhat truthful. The glass half full in me sees that England have (a) qualified and done it as top of the group. (b) let in just the 1 goal, a screamer from 25 yards after the defence switched off, (c) despite not looking great going forward have looked totally untroubled in 2 of the 3 games. That isnt likely to win the competition nor trouble the biggest countries and we need to improve going forward. Whether we do or not is open to debate But in my view we have done all we need to so far. We will probably go out on penalties after a draw.....

Thanks for posting this - most of the comments are very balanced. I agree with the one that says Southgate seems to want to play all the best players but then ends up playing some out of position. We need to get the balance of the team right and if that means not starting all the 'big' names so be it. We are still in with a decent chance of going deep into this tournament if we make better use of our depth of attacking talent.

As already mentioned, England aren't the only ones where questions are being asked. Despite playing well in their first two games (which I watched) and topping the group there was some discontent here for the host nation after needing an injury time equalizer against the Swiss (I didn't watch that game so not sure how bad it was). France haven't done too great. The Belgium players were met with boos and abuse after their game here in Stuttgart (De Bruyne led them away and down the tunnel).

Brace yourselves... it has been confirmed that the 2026 World Cup will have 48 teams, as will every World Cup thereafter! It will effectively be a double Euros, with 12 groups of 4 teams, and 32 teams progressing to the knockout rounds (the top 2 of each group and the 8 best third-placed teams). May as just as well abolish qualifiers. Get every country that enters to turn up and play hundreds of games till we get to a meaningful competition. Just think how much could be made out of the TV companies selling our soul totally. Just think even Wales might get there then. Christ on bike, could you imagine the kerfuffle that the PL would kick up. Their half a million quid a week prima donnas are already playing around 3 games a fortnight and are tired now.

Switzerland looked a good side in beating Italy 2-0. Experienced defenders and a midfield ticking over nicely with an energetic press and two wide players with pace. Even given the fact that is one of the poorest Italian sides I have ever seen Switzerland will be hard opponents for England assuming we get through tomorrow's game.

As much as I want the Germans to win , it seems they brought on VAR at half time , 1-0 up now ( var got the goal ) I think they will take var off again and bring him back on later if necessary

Ally McCoist is a breath of fresh air and surely the best Co-commentator about? It’s good to see he’s become more mainstream again last few years
What is hard to understand is why ITV have fully axed Clive Tyldesley! It was bad enough when they replaced him as main commentator with the dull as dish water Matterface a few years ago

Got to feel for the Danes as what to make of VAR. A goal disallowed because his big toe was offside and a penalty given by snickometer. And whilst the Swiss did look good, Italy reminded me of England in that they looked knackered from the off (another "big" nation, holders no less, who have struggled in this competition).
Anyhow, come on England!!

Loving the Coist co-comms too! Much better than the street ‘bruv’ style commentary that has become the norm.
I’m struggling to understand how we can actually be involved in a major tournament and still not know our strongest team.

I’m struggling to understand how we can actually be involved in a major tournament and still not know our strongest team. I think it’s quite obvious really, when managers like Pep and Arteta are constantly pulling their players out of internationals “injured”, we seldom if ever get a full squad to choose from

Not a fan of commentators in general, all I want them to do is identify the players.
I have seen enough football and don’t need to be told ‘that was good defending’ or ‘that was a missed chance.’

Interesting statement in today's Observer which I (as a Physics teacher) appreciated - The English football team's version of Newton's Third Law should be every action has an unequal and hysterical overreaction. Lets hope that does not apply today and I think we will get a decent performance and a victory.
