Left footed players on the right, right footed on the left. Slows everything down while they turn inside to their stronger foot. Get Saka off for Palmer and Bellingham or Foden off for Gordon. And have Watkins warming up. Liverpool under klopp managed to play some of the most aggressive and quality attacking football in recent history using salah and mane cutting in. Palmer, Saka and Gordon all reached double digits assists and goals cutting in as well. It's all in the set up and Southgates drilling of the team to play conservative, slow football. It's been the same since he took over. It gets results no doubt but it's torturous watching and it usually comes up short against teams of genuine quality. Even more infuriating because as soon as England drive forward and loosen the shackles we look a highly effective team. I have to admit that players on the ‘wrong’ side is my pet hate, I was schooled in the Arthur Rowley method of telling wingers to get to the touchline and cross the ball for him to head in. England’s tempo is so much slower that, for example, Liverpool’s. When Salah gets the ball he’s usually running forwards and gets inside the defender while running towards goal. Whereas Saka (for England) is static receiving the ball and has to pass backwards or sideways. Having said that Palmer looked to take on defenders and deserves a start.

Let's be honest we got out of jail there. The whole performance was abject at best and if not for one moment of brilliance from Bellingham we would have been out. Lets forget we had a goal wiped out for offside that was not down to an offside trap, we hit the post and Kane missed 2 great chances , their keeper probably had one of his busiest ever games , and then we scored and we scored again , not bad for what you call abject We did enough to win but not necessarily in the correct order to satisfy the critics

Dubravka was busier warming the bench when he was on loan at Man United! Foden's poor positional play was to blame for the offside and everyone misses chances, whether they hit the woodwork or go wide, they're all misses. Watch the first kick off and it tells its own story. Slovakia start the game, Kane trots into their half and all nine of England's remaining outfield players retreat deeper into their own half. Midfield abandoned immediately! Did they think it was a poor League 1 game and Slovakia would lump it into the channel to force a defensive throw in? We'll see whether England can finally up their performance levels in the QF. Switzerland have been far better than any team England have faced so far. I don't think we'll go much further unless we do improve significantly.

Left footed players on the right, right footed on the left. Slows everything down while they turn inside to their stronger foot. Get Saka off for Palmer and Bellingham or Foden off for Gordon. And have Watkins warming up. We don’t have a left footed left back, so let’s play Saka there and start Palmer on the right wing. Saka looked more comfortable there than Trippier and he has the ability to take on the defender on his outside. Trippier didn’t once try to take on the defender. He cut back every time ; sideways and backwards. Arrgghhh ! This said, the Swiss will murder us if we play like we did today. Did I imagine it or did Saka play as a full back when he first broke through? This left back mess is really on Southgate (and I speak as someone who's been generally supportive of him). Shaw's fitness was obviously a gamble. He's played 15 games this season and still isn't fit enough to come on, even as a substitute when the manager has juggled the position 4 times in the same match! We're now at the QF stage - is he ever going to be fit enough? Given all that, what possessed Southgate not to take another specialist left back, rather than assume someone else could cover it? Why did he bring Gomez as cover if Trippier/Saka and even Eze are used instead? Southgate's not only possibly wasted a squad place on Shaw, he's failed to provide a sensible alternative. With Guehi (who's been excellent) suspended, Southgate's innate caution means he's unlikely to risk another defensive change, so we're probably stuck with the ineffective Trippier again against Switzerland, if he's fit.

It was an appalling performance yet again, Slovakia can feel really hard done by to be out. Some of the England players sensitivity to criticism is really quite something, just acknowledge you’re not playing to an acceptable level.
Still, three more results like that and they’re all hero’s.

Stranger We follow Plan A and are a distant second in a two horse race. We then change . personnel and batter them for a few minutes. We score a quality very late goal the type that comes off once in 50 attempts. The players seemed to have decided to attack, possibly fearing another disastrous penalty shoot out. Momentum was now on our side and we quickly added a second. Enter Mr Southgate again, pulling every body back in the hope of killing the game. It is quite possible and far less nervy to defend in you opponents half but that is nose-bleed territory for GS. We held on and the result scores a 10 but the overall performance, considering the strength of opposition deserves no more than 4.

At that stage there was every possibility of the final score being 2-2 and a penalty shoot out. And so you take Kane your main penalty taker off. Thankfully we held onto the lead

Great penalty saves from Diogo Costa, however.

What a diva Ronaldo is. A record of 0 goals from 33 freekicks during his Euros appearances and just one goal from 60 direct freekicks at major international tournaments, according to ESPN. And yet we still have to endure the preening ritual of him shaping up to take one. Then the tears after he misses a penalty. What must be going through Bruno Fernandes' mind?
Surely, Martinez must rule that it is time to introduce some variety into Portugal's free kick taking or is Ronaldo just too big for his boots?

There was a good article before the tournament about whether Ronaldo is a benefit or a burden. Answer was very clear last night

You don't need to , but what you could do is take on board that It's not just an England thing , it's tournament football , we now have the Swiss , they almost beat the Germans who were the only side looking great , dumped the holders Italy out but failed to beat the Scots Anything can happen

Kylian Mbappe went down a peg in my eyes. When France scored, I know hw was excited, but to go up to the Belgian Centre Back and shout in his face was a pathetic, disgusting act. I was hoping we would offer him 450 quid a wick to play for us, but after that, I hope you rot away on your £1600 million a month.
That should teach him. I would like to see his face when he found out we'd withdrawn our offer.

England have struggled to break down teams, as for performances they have been dire, Switzerland have a very well organised team with a good defensive record, we don't deserve to have got as far as we have ,Let us hope we finally start playing football and look a lot sharper in all area's.
