Right-wing Sky News cancel their debate to avoid candidate bickering damaging the Conservative 'brand'. Quelle surprise! Obviously never watched a Kay Burley political interview before. Sky cancelled it after Truss and Sunak withdrew.

I think that’s why it should be no one who has been in the cabinet. If you're not an establishment figure, then you're a 'populist'.
If you have held cabinet positions then you are part of the failed establishment.
If you've never held a cabinet position then you lack the experience. It really depends on which horse the media are backing as to which of these arguments get perpetuated. it seems the media have already decided who they wont

What's the point of all this razzmatazz for the benefit of a handful of individuals who should be sufficiently engaged to have an idea of who they want to vote for already?

To demonstrate some of the integrity they claim to possess by honouring a commitment to be questioned by the media/public, rather than aborting the moment their polling figures appear to be good.

Probably because politicians will cancel visits to hospitals, etc, usually for a chance to be on the telly. Running scared from an appearance on the box indicates they are not up to the job - because eventually the winner will have to face the media when PM, sometimes at a moments notice.
If a broadcaster wants to set up a debate, that will have to be conducted within ofcom guidelines, and a politicion decides not to attend after saying they would then why not empty chair them?

I remember Boris hiding from an interview with Andrew Neil in 2019.
He's subsequently utilised fridges to avoid questions. But his normal methodology has either been to lie, or bluster and fail to answer questions altogether.

Sunak 115 votes. Mordaunt 82, Truss 71, Badenoch 58, Tugendhat 31.
Tugendhat's supporters should 'lend' all of their votes to Badenoch tomorrow in order to eliminate Truss, then switch to Sunak or Mordaunt on Wednesday.
That might get rid of both the right wingers and leave the Membership with a choice between Sunak and Mordaunt. That said, if Truss was eliminated, maybe most of her supporters would end up backing Badenoch, which in turn would threaten Mordaunt's position.
Gavin Willimson would understand the rationale of my argument! He might be happy with either Truss or Mordaunt as Team Sunak's final opponent, but might not be quite so confident if Badenoch got through. That being the case, he'll want either Badenoch eliminated tomorrow, or Truss eliminated followed by Badenoch the next day.

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11026109/JASON-GROVES-analyses-Tory-leadership-race-battle-goes-final-four.htmlBy tomorrow morning Mr Sunak could be so far ahead that he is able to surreptitiously ‘lend’ votes to the candidate he would most like to face in the final run-off. The disreputable tactic is hard to prove. But Tory MPs believe it was deployed to give both Theresa May and Boris Johnson an easy run. In each case their campaigns were masterminded by former chief whip Sir Gavin Williamson, who is now on Team Sunak. On the evidence of recent days, Mr Sunak would probably rather face Miss Mordaunt, whose campaign appears to have stalled. She certainly looks likely to be in most need of support, despite clinging on to second place. Away from the cameras, in Westminster’s dark corners, Sir Gavin, Mr Gove and other backroom players may be about to make their decisive moves.

Now Sunak wants to run against Penny M? Did a Truss trouncing in the last televised debate scare him a little? Perhaps she should have left the mauling until it was just the two of them? Would be good to not have her as one of the two though.
Sir Gavin? I thought you had that wrong, but he really is isn't he? That's crazy.

Kemi Badenoch seems to be a sensible person who has her finger on the pulse of the issues in the uk but the race for leadership has come to soon.

Ellwood lost the whip after he failed to vote in last night's confidence vote Ex-soldier is chairman of the Defence Committee and is currently in Moldova He was one of 12 Tories who abstained in vote comfortably won by PM. Boris Johnson took revenge on one of his loudest Tory critics today for failing to support his Government. Former minister Tobias Ellwood was stripped of the party whip after he failed to vote in last night's Commons confidence vote. But the move is likely to be seen as driven purely by the PM's desire to get back at a backbencher who has made little secret of his loathing for him. One less vote for Mordaunt then. Still, that Tory MP accused of rape and told to stay away from the Parliamentary Estate will still have a vote, as he's not suspended.

Never mind that Elwood is presumably a good chairman of the defence committee just when we need one. No it’s far more important that he’s upset this useless excuse of a PM by saying what so many of us think. The sooner Boris goes the better.

Now there's a tactic: Come over as the one Sunak is most likely to beat and Sir Gav fixes it for you to be the other one of the two? Williamson has allegedly done something similar before on behalf of Johnson, when extra votes for Hunt mysteriously appeared which knocked the more of a threat Gove out from the contest, leaving Johnson in a run off against the ineffective Hunt. The suspicion is that those votes were 'lent' to Hunt from supporters of Johnson on the directions of Williamson. Williamson was also in charge of some proxy votes for Johnson.
