Penny Mordaunt for me, I see our Daniel is supporting Jeremy Hunt. just highlights how clueless he is . Nadhim Zahawi was on the front of one newspaper saying he would model himself on Margaret Thatcher so heven help us.

If you trust the bookies it looks like Mordaunt is going to win, as long as she makes it to the final two that is.

I honestly have yet to make up my mind; I am drawn to Rishi Sunak's attachment to financial rectitude (no enthusiasm for "unfunded" tax cuts), but conversely to a low-taxation economy: it is a circle which Tory governments always struggle to square, despite the evidence suggesting, I think, that generally lower taxation does not necessarily result in a reduced tax-take by the Exchequer: as with Labour, the mantra is "growth in the economy" and the argument is whether rates of taxation should be reduced with the intention of stimulating the economy or whether that approach must be delayed until an era of more "sound" money returns - very much chickens and eggs! As one of the few on here who will get to choose in the event that the field is whittled down to a final two, I shall be paying attention.

Sunak for me. He is from a financial post so is very unlikely to want to lock us down ever again with the problems it causes the economy. For the same reason I'm glad Savid Javid is no longer in the running - he wanted us locked down last Christmas 😡

What’s most interesting about this battle is what looks like a clear difference of opinions between the MPs and the rest of the party. By all accounts the MPs favourite Sunak could get completely rejected by the party members.

I've got a strange feeling Sunak might drop away and not make the last two, I think it'll be an all female affair.

Thankfully the worst two are gone. Zahawi’s come out of this with his reputation and credibility seriously damaged, and as for Jeremy Hunt I think everyone from the far left to far right is delighted he won’t be anywhere near the job. Even those few MPs who voted for him can’t have seriously believed in him.

I think Mordaunt has got this unless something dramatic happens.

For the same reason I'm glad Savid Javid is no longer in the running - he wanted us locked down last Christmas 😡 As long as he starts with the NHS funding I’d agree. Fact is the NHS is hardly coping in July with 7+ hours queueing ambulances if you can get one, no where to discharge ill or even recovering patients to and backlogs growing rather than reducing.

I don't get the people who are supporting Sunak. Like johnson he broke the law and was fined. Add to that the Green Card business, tax etc etc. Another slippery customer.

www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/jul/13/daily-mail-out-to-stop-rishi-sunak-as-tory-rivals-vie-for-press-backingRishi Sunak is discovering that hell hath no fury like the Daily Mail scorned, as the right wing newspaper dedicates itself to destroying the former chancellor’s bid to be Tory leader. In the week since Boris Johnson was deposed, the newspaper has remained steadfastly loyal to the outgoing prime minister – and steadfastly opposed to those such as Sunak who helped to force him out of office. The expectation among staff at the Mail is that it will formally back Liz Truss for leader, with journalists at the outlet told to avoid being overly critical of the foreign secretary. This would fit with Tuesday’s front-page story, which was headlined “Truss: back me or it’ll be Rishi”. The strong support for Johnson could be jarring for some of the Daily Mail’s readers, because until last autumn, under the editorship of Geordie Greig, the newspaper was often critical of Johnson. But since Greig was sacked and replaced with Ted Verity, the newspaper has become one of Johnson’s strongest supporters. Paul Dacre, the former editor, remains involved with the title amid speculation that Johnson has promised him a seat in the House of Lords after failing to get him the job of running the media regulator Ofcom.
