Purely my personal view: The last thing Conservative MPs want now is a General Election. The last thing most of the voters want is for this to carry on until they have to have a General Election. Sorry Liz, but sacking the chancellor doesn't extracate you from this mess, you have to change, and change fast. you clearly are not a conservative but somehow think you can speak on behalf of all of them, thats an amazing skill you have ;-)

If she wanted to put the country first, she’d install Rishi as Chancellor (if he’d take it).

Apparently the markets have reacted badly to Truss’ statement, which according to a supporter, was bad even by her standards.

No surprise at who is the first person to respond to "The unofficial Tory supporters thread". The person whose 'floating voter' credentials sank a long time ago. A history of being the patron saint of lost causes when it comes to leaders.

I think this sums up a lot of our feelings on the last 12 years of UK politics pretty succinctly;

On a personal level I'm actually starting to feel sorry for Truss. Imagine getting your dream job and it going so wrong so quickly. Its painful to watch now.
But even within the context of the slightly odd political world post brexit, its hard to see how someone with experience in the Government at a senior level could have quite so badly misjudged how her policies would work with the markets, her own party and the general public. She seems to have ripped up every convention and hoped it would all somehow fall into place.
Quite who the Conservatives turn to next and how they appoint them is going to be very interesting

Can’t help but agree. I find Liz Truss embarrassing but do feel sorry for her , genuinely . I know she has made dreadful mistakes in the short time she’s been in office which has impacted upon the lives of so many but I really think she has made decisions which she feels will help the Country grow . It’s all gone wrong but the pitiful thing is she can’t see it’s because of decisions she has made . She has been forced to change or rather , as I see it, she has been “told “ look, if you carry on down the path you are taking the whole party will suffer . So, she sacks her Chancellor which hasn’t won her many friends in the party and appoints Hunt in his place , someone who wasn’t even offered a position in her original cabinet as far as I am aware. Her track record as Trade Minister wasn’t great, she didn’t get the majority support of her parliamentary party and yet here she is, in charge of a party reeling from the turmoil of having to dispense of its previous leader . To put her out of her misery and the Country too surely the only way forward out of this complete mess is to call a GE .

That's not going to happen. The Conservatives asking for a GE would be like turkeys voting for Christmas

Jeremy Hunt is now the PM in all but name and Truss just an inconvenient reminder to the Tory members that they made a mistake thinking that the way forward is further to the right.
The Tory boys may not like it, but this is probably the best outcome for them.
Personally I'd like Hunt to point out that the best way to get growth into the economy without spending money that we don't have would be to join the world's largest trading block. That would make for an interesting cabinet meeting.

Hunt has refused to commit to increasing benefits in line with inflation. But claimed he is “very sensitive” to the needs of the poorest. Claimed Liz Truss has “listened” to crisis caused by mini-budget. She will be judged at the next election by what she does over the next 18 months. Warned all government departments, including the NHS and defence, will face spending cuts. “Difficult decisions” to come. Pledged that money that would have been received from the health and social care levy will be protected. Some taxes will go up. Others will not come down “as much as people hoped”. The Conservatives are united “around the most important issues” including growth and Brexit. He will meet with treasury officials later today and with Truss tomorrow. It was a “mistake” to cut taxes of wealthiest and to “fly blind” without the confidence of the Office of Budget Responsibility. He declined to give any specific commitments about his fiscal statement on 31 October.
This seems to be totally at odds with the platform on which Truss got herself elected.
Boris Johnson’s former press secretary Will Walden has said that Jeremy Hunt is tantamount to a “caretaker prime minister”.
Trussonomics is clearly “being jumped”, he told Sky News, and Liz Truss “didn’t come close” to calming nerves in yesterday’s press conference. The prime minister’s performance was, he said, “tone deaf” and did not show empathy.

Wage increases might not be in line with inflation, but they are running at around 5.4%, tax thresholds are not going to rise in line with inflation next April, nor did they last April. Petrol and general prices up, so VAT and income tax take will be up.
All in all, the government is going to have a far bigger tax take next year without doing anything.
Nibble at the windfall profits of oil and energy companies to offset helping people with their energy bills and you wonder why the Tories have managed to trash things so badly? Should be easy for another party to run things better without having to do too much - even the Liberals could do it!

There are discussions between senior members of the 1922 Committee of Conservative party backbenchers set to take place this weekend, about Truss’ leadership. There are rumours that there has been a “substantial number” of letters sent in to the committee calling for a vote of no confidence, Sky News has reported, despite Truss being immune for a year after her election.

An election getting nearer, things not going well. Do they grasp the nettle and change leader - somehow, without another 8 week leadership contest, or do they hope that Truss will become electable before the next election? A difficult decision, some might think it best to operate on the problem sooner, rather than later.
As usual, the interests of the Conservative party will come before the interests of the country.

'I don't think Liz Truss has any consistent beliefs. So instead she bought some opinions on eBay. She posed as a free-market liberal (probably out of nothing more than ambition, since we know how easily she changes her mind). This is not an especially conservative view, but some people think it is. The trouble is that our economy, loaded with debt and taxes, is far too decrepit to cope with such measures. You can say you are going to stimulate it back to health, but you might as well try to turn a hobbling pensioner into an Olympic athlete by giving him a handful of amphetamines, an electric shock and a can of Red Bull'.
The only good thing is that once the Tories have gone, millions will realise the truth – that they have no friends at Westminster, and if they want to change this they must build a new party and make it win.
