Yes. Tactical voting has been very successful in by elections, including North Shropshire. It now needs to be employed in the General Election, otherwise the opposition vote will be split, allowing Kawczynski another 5 years. On the face of it, Labour look best placed to be the main challenger to the Tories in Shrewsbury, having come 2nd in the General Election. But that is deceptive. Helen Morgan came a poor 3rd in North Shropshire in 2019, but the majority of Conservative supporters here were never going to switch to Labour. Hence when the by election took place they either sat on their hands or backed Helen Morgan. I strongly suspect that the same scenario exists in Shrewsbury - if you want Tory supporters to desert Kawczynski, then the Lib Dem candidate is likely to be where they take their vote, as few will transfer their allegiance to Labour, even though I'm aware that Paul Marsden won the seat twice for Labour in 1997 and 2001 before defecting to the Lib Dems. But that was over 20 years ago and the demographics of Shrewsbury have changed. However, in Telford a Lib Dem vote is a wasted vote, so their supporters need to get behind the Labour candidate if Allan is to be defeated. Co-operation between the Labour Party and the Lib Dems in the area of tactical voting is something the Tories fear. It's gone on unofficially in North Shropshire, Tiverton & Amersham and Wakefield, but needs to be developed further. Of course, much, if not all, of this is predicated on the basis of Mr Kawczynski being the Conservative candidate at the next GE.... On the wider issue of "tactical voting", in the event of such a tactic proving successful, it would inevitably result in the election of a government which, quite literally, and by definition, nobody actually would have positively voted for; ain't Democracy a wonderful thing... well, that's because both the main parties for their own selfish reasons don't want to go anywhere near PR.

You are absolutely spot-on with that remark, but and it's a crucial "but" I am not entirely convinced that that an election decided under a PR system would, in and of itself, necessarily result in efficient and acceptable governments!

Just total disregard for carrying out the collection of a windfall tax when even the oil companies had anticipated there would be one. A dereliction of duty.

OK - so long as we're agreed that it isn't "sleaze" at all; personally, I would not be against, in principle, an additional government levy on the oil producers whose profits have been artificially inflated by matters beyond their control, the profits being dictated, to a large extent, by high prices fuelled (!) by Putin's activities, and the global bounce-back in economic activity following the pandemic.

Would not think there were many who would disagree with that. Shame our current government is a little slow off the mark. That tardy approach seems to be happening all over again with the failure to control the price cap on bills - because of government inaction we have seen reports on likely price cap rises escalate from the sublime to the ridiculous in the last week or two. Sunak or Truss, whoever, they need to get a grip!

Be careful what you wish for: no system of governance has ever existed, nor can EVER exist, without "conflicts of interest" - even dictators, and non-democratic one-party States, have to balance the pros and cons of a particular course of action and it simply comes down to identifying those conflicts, and the quality of decision-making. On balance, I don't think we have too bad a system - one where, every few years we get the chance to register our approval or otherwise in those decisions. Never forget that a halo is only 9" away from being a noose!

Only the wallpaper appears to be staying. Removal men spent Monday loading up two lorries with the contents of the flat above Number 11 Downing Street that has been Boris and Carrie Johnson’s home for just over three years.
The Johnsons avoided the trauma of watching their flat being stripped bare by remaining out of the country on holiday in Greece.
Two removal trucks were needed to store possessions while the couple work out where they will live after Mr Johnson hands over power to his successor in the first week of September.
They will spend the final weeks of his premiership at Chequers before, according to one source, moving temporarily into a house or apartment provided by a friend, or possibly a Conservative Party donor.

We have a morally bankrupt and corrupt ruling 'elite' globally at present. They have just used the rackiteering principle, that Smedley D Butler wrote about, brilliantly to oversee a massive transfer of wealth whilst we had a global pandemic. They will now use the global climate crisis and the global cost of living crisis to do the same. These people are very competent, despite what anyone might believe. What a time to be alive. I mean, look at how these people behave. We must cut carbon emissions, so we will all meet in a remote spot to discuss it. We will get there by private jet!

Boris and Carrie Johnson never got to enjoy the prime ministerial superyacht they wanted the taxpayers to stump up for. But, after cavorting on the dance floor at Daylesford – the Cotswold pile of JCB boss Lord Bamford – there is speculation that their first post-Downing Street trip might be aboard The Virginian, the digger-maker’s ultra-luxe pleasure cruiser.
The 62.3-metre motor yacht comes complete with key features such as a “luminous observation lounge”, an “amazing upper-deck bar and dining area” as well as “a fully equipped gym”, of which the disgraced PM is clearly in urgent need.
The Johnsons aren’t likely to be minded to pay the £220,000 a week it normally costs to hire the craft, which is currently at anchor in the Mediterranean.
A shame for Bamford, whose key operating firm JCB Excavators has just reported pre-tax profits for 2021 at £324.5m, but whose boating venture is more of a money-pit than money-maker. It’s nursing a £6.2m pre-tax loss in 2020 on turnover of £823,816. Accounts further reveal accumulated trading losses of £104.2m and a negative net worth of £94.5m as at December 31 2020.

Oh, it's lovely, man with (too) many failings because he's human shows his human side. If only some of his efforts could have gone into the realisation of the better life he promised voters instead of the greater glorification of Boris and some dodgy party fund raising.
Don't think we could accuse Truss, Patel, Raab or (m)any of the others of having a human side.......

It really is a nauseating sight to see the likes of Buckland, Cairns and Skidmore abandoning Sunak in order presumably to be in the mix to be awarded Ministerial posts by Truss.
Complete lack of principles, which is to be honest is of little surprise.

As has been mentioned, although the point seems to have been missed by some, virtually ANY donation to a political party can trigger an accusation of conflicts of interest; I look forward to the day when Labour will refuse to accept Union donations in order to avoid such accusations when passing pro-Union legislation; in the meantime, we have perhaps an imperfect system of party funding but an alternative is not yet being suggested - just a simplistic "bring down the whole thing" approach with nothing in its place - evil nihilism, at best!

Hydrogen could be made with surplus wind and solar ppwer, when it's available, but lends itself to being stored on a factory site and powering an energy intensive manufacturing process on the site - the thing about electric buses, JCBs, cars, is that we already have electricity supplies everywhere for the distribution of it.

Here's some Labour sleaze.
Tony Blair was warned about the flawed Post Office Horizon computer system that led to hundreds of wrongful prosecutions, The Daily Telegraph can reveal.
The Labour prime minister was told by officials in 1998 that Horizon was “increasingly flawed”, says a report to Sir Wyn Williams’s statutory inquiry into the scandal.
Despite having the option to renegotiate or cancel the government’s contract to buy Horizon, Mr Blair opted to continue with the project and even suggested giving its makers a bonus.
Courts have heard allegations that Post Office bosses knew Horizon was flawed but still proceeded with prosecutions. Lord Arbuthnot of Edrom called for those responsible “to be held fully to account,” saying: “The fact that Horizon could not be relied upon was known to some people – including, we now learn, the then prime minister – from a very early stage.
“This makes it all the more dreadful that so many people in authority ignored the protestations of the sub-postmasters and humiliated, prosecuted, bankrupted and imprisoned them.”
Officials gave Mr Blair three options: scrap Horizon; renegotiate the contract with supplier International Computers Ltd (ICL); or terminate the deal. The prime minister opted to continue.

According to the polling firm Ipsos UK, three-quarters of all voters, and two-thirds of people who voted Conservative in 2019, think the privileges committee inquiry into whether Boris Johnson misled MPs about Partygate is justified.
This does not of course include the Daily and Sunday Mail, whose editors Dacre and Verity have for weeks disgracefully included article after article in their paper backing Johnson and demanding that the inquiry never takes place.
This is bad news for the Mail newspapers which have been running news articles and opinion pieces clearly designed to kill the inquiry. The Mail group is still very supportive of Johnson and at the weekend it carried a news story based on a briefing circulating among MPs arguing, in effect, that it would be bad for parliament to penalise ministers who lie to MPs. There was also an opinion piece saying the inquiry was akin to a show trial from Stalin’s Russia – written by someone who had clearly forgotten what actually happened to the victims of Stalin’s show trials.
