To the extent that this appointment will signal an end, for the moment at least, of the visceral "pro-" and "anti-" (insert name of your choice) camps on this board, I welcome this speedy announcement - one of the few benefits of social media is that it provides an opportunity for people to let off steam; I shudder to think how toxic the atmosphere would have been in a ground with supporters! COYB Very pleased with the appointment. It’s a real statement of intent from the board, and great to have such an experienced name in. As with all of the old ‘names’ he’s got a few negative marks on his CV, but judging by comments from supporters of his past clubs, he’s generally well thought of. Off the field, I think (realistically) it slams the door firmly shut on Paul Hurst ever returning as manager. It’s a new era. The ‘Hurst season’ and its aftermath has slowly turned into a millstone... we need to move forward now.

I expected Town to fart around for weeks and weeks before making a decision which would have been Hurst . Seems that RW has realized that we are in the s**te and needed to act quickly . The seriousness of our situation has dawned on our “Board “ and they have made a decision which , by the posts on this board , has been well received. Steve Cotterill has taken up the challenge but no doubt wants to have some security hence the length of his contract . I think this appointment will go down well with the players . He has a job on getting us out of the mess we are in . I’m looking forward to seeing how he gets on ; he has some very good players to work with , let’s see what he can do with them . All in all I am surprised , didn’t think RW would go for a well known personality like Steve Cotterill .
I am very pleased with this appointment, really good news , gives us hope and brightens the gloom which has covered the Club of late . Welcome SC - I wish you every success with our magnificent club .

First thing that came to mind was how long has he been out of the game? I guess that would be the only concern. But even so, as the club states I do think its important that we got something in sooner rather than later considering the state we're in and with the amount of games coming up. Good luck to him. Lets hope things click. 👍

There is no hiding place now for those of our players who have been error-prone and underperforming this season because they have a manager with a track record at this level. If those players want to see a role model they should look no further than Whalley who plays every game as if his life depended on it. Come on Town - a place in the third round and a move up the table should cheer us all up as much as the imminent vaccine.

I think some of the central defenders might be slightly worried about their chances of getting into the team/squad. I expect a lot of players to be loaned out to make room for new players.

Intrigued on his backroom staff too. I think that's an area Ricketts didn't do that well with and needs some work. The two staff we have already he will know though - Jensen he managed at Burnley and he will have worked with Andy Johnson at Birmingham. No doubt this is one reason why Jensen is still here

Is he famous enough for us to be known as ‘Steve’s Cotterill’s Shrewsbury’ I wonder?
I see Derby County have a new name for the moment.

All credit to Mr Wycherley and the CEO for an astute appointment that also has us fans hoping for great things. They, like us, saw a while back that SR may have been well intentioned but he was floundering to motivate, organise and push a good squad to the necessary fitness levels. Onwards and upwards from here...

Very pleased with this appointment, very experienced manager. In regards to him not having a job for two and a half years, he probably had his brain fried at Birmingham! They have had 4 managers since he left!

Very good article that - looks like after a season so far full of damp squibs we can expect some real fireworks!

Not discounting that but he left Bristol nearly 5 years ago. He will be a different man and the football world feels quite different (for numerous reasons). I wonder how different it will be for him playing and training in covid. He's obviously been out of the game for a while and it must be a fairly weird environment to come back into

Lewis is positive. Sounds certainly like what we need in the short term at least

Looking forward to seeing how he will play Jason Cummings. Sam failed to get the best out of him. Not just Sam - it seems to me that Jason Cummings has failed to get the best out of Jason Cummings too. Let's hope they click. We needed a manager who could boss a dressing room that now contains a fair number of older heads as well as bring on the younger players. I don't mean in an old school bawling and shouting way but a proper leader. I don't buy that we lack fitness - I think we've shown a lack of confidence, spirit and commitment and, as someone said earlier, that translates into looking like a lack of fitness when up against a more committed team. Cotterill seems the right man for that job. I'm feeling a lot more optimistic than I was a few days ago.

Good luck to Steve and I hope it works out for us.
But, having seen a lot of Birmingham under his tenure I am worried. In the season where he had his six months in charge Birmingham were joint lowest scorers with 38 goals, and he hardly ever played two strikers, even at home. The following season, with no major additions to the squad, Gary Monk played Lucas Jutkiewitz and Che Adams, who had both been there under Cotterill, in nearly every game and they scored 36 between them and the team 64.
It may be that his face didn’t fit at Birmingham, and yes they are a basket case. Maybe L1 and L2 are his level and I would love him to do very well and at least drag up us to mid table. But goals win matches...
So fingers crossed.....

Talking about experience, whenever I think of Cotterill I'm reminded of Cheltenham and (what I think was) their first season in the League. I was down there on the away terrace when we went there and won 1-0. I think it had been moved for the box, perhaps even our first appearance on Sky? Lee Steele scored. Just having a look, I think that may have been back in 1999.

More than happy with this appointment. Well done RW, hopefully we can now put to bed for some time at least the often quoted (by some) line that "Roland has no ambition"
Invested quite heavily in the squad already this season, now prepared to invest in a long term contract with a manager who has proved he knows how to succeed at a club.
Hopefully it will work well, SC will find that he will be allowed to run the playing side pretty much as he wants without interference that he may have encountered at other clubs, and get the backing to bring in whoever's he wants (within the budget that will no doubt have been discussed.)
Looking forward to seeing what we can do, still plenty to play for this season.

I’ve just read the article in the Star with Paul Binning, Bristol writer, giving his take on Cotterill. Based on his views I think we’ve got someone who will fit the Shrewsbury Town mould. He seems everything we need. Apparently he says to players what he wants and gets from them what he wants. Let’s hope he can fire up our lot to deliver what I believe they are more than capable of. I think he will.

I remember him giving an after-match pitch side interview (think it was when he was at Notts County) a couple of the younger County players were 'warming down' behind him and weren't perhaps applying themselves as much as they should (joking around and loudly laughing). Cotterill politely excused himself to the interviewer turned round and gave them a right mouth full!! Then apologised profusely to the guy doing the interview and carried on as if nothing had happened!!
