I've been critical of Roland's appointments but credit where it's due here, 3 & 1/2 year shows ambition, it's a great appointment. It’s also a bloody big wedge to pay out should (& let’s all he doesn’t) fail - huge gamble with such a lengthy deal On the face of it, yes, but I'd expect there to be some break clause protections built in re minimum targets etc. Having got over my initial surprise I'm very pleased with this appointment - and relieved it's one that all supporters can get behind. He's an ex-striker too - whether that brings us a more attacking approach is another matter but it makes a nice change! All the best, Steve.

I’m not thrilled by this appointment but will of course back the new manager. Good to see that we have gone for someone with a lot of experience. His last spell was a disaster at Birmingham City. One of my close friends (supports Brum) said he has a massive ego and will just lose his temper frequently at players. Maybe we need that, Sam was a bit “too nice”. Fingers crossed anyway, if it clicks, we could be watching some entertaining football. Birmingham have been a basket case for a long time though - Zola and Monk ran aground there recently too.

I think that having an ego is an almost compulsory attribute for a manager in almost any work situation 🤣 Good luck to him!

Experienced was the key thing for me and I’m glad we didn’t go back to Hurst. His next job is likely going to be in non-league.

His coaches will be interesting, definitely need an attack minded coach I can't remember the last one we had. Very interesting January window approaching, s**t loads out of contract. He's got 4 weeks to cast his eye.

Ok I’ll ask the question - does he wave at the fans?

About the best we could get in the circumstances, as already said the back room appointments will be vital.

Very excited by this appointment, a very experienced manager at this level. If he can get some self belief back into the squad, with a few good additions in January, this season could still be a decent season. Next season could be great, we should have full crowds by then too. Very happy with this appointment.

100% effort from players Sunday for sure. Already looking forward to an attractive third round home tie and the problems that will bring.

In Roland we trust! Looking forward to singing there is only one Roland Wycherley again when success comes our way. I really hope so and SC will get my full support whatever the results.....Feeling fairly positive the squads good enough and Steve's experienced enough. Also 2 years out of management he needs it to go well as much as we do. However it does seem a quick appointment and appears to be a friend of Roland so i just hope the generous 3 1/2 year contracts got the appropriate get out clauses like 'Your number one target is to avoid relegation' with a break clause if it goes tits up.... I'm only saying this as twice bitten you should learn a lesson...

There always one who was never going to be pleased. Can we all just get behind the bloke for now and see it as a new dawn rather than yet another opportunity to hark back to the recent past. Well said

Pretty pleased with this. We could have had others with different strengths etc but he brings the experience that hopefully can get a tune out of a good squad (on paper)!
Welcome Steve!

He's got 4 weeks to cast his eye. Yes but we can only sign players if we remove someone from the playing squad or they're under 21, we've already got Love and Goss on the sidelines so makes the January window a bit different this year.... If you look at the squad now which senior players would you off load (Might as well pay them off because if they're not in the squad it just costs money to keep them fit for no reason) sure they'll be some movement but not as easy as before with unlimited squad numbers

Agree with comments on here. On Sunday I think we will see a team that wants to play and knows how to play. A lot of this will be as a result of Ricketts departure. An interesting and good comment has been made about who Cotterill gets in as his Assistant. Will certainly need to be attack minded and not afraid to play football . The new manager has some talent to work with. All the best from me to the new manager

I doubt many of us are demanding promotion out of this appointment, or even the play offs. We just want someone to turn us into a hard working, respectable and competitive team at this level, one which is capable of a top half position and which does not flirt with relegation.
Credit where it's due, this is an excellent appointment. Cotterill has all the experience and ability necessary, plus the financial backing to make this happen. If it doesn't, well fair enough, s**t happens sometimes, but no faulting the ambition of Roland here. Well done STFC.

To the extent that this appointment will signal an end, for the moment at least, of the visceral "pro-" and "anti-" (insert name of your choice) camps on this board, I welcome this speedy announcement - one of the few benefits of social media is that it provides an opportunity for people to let off steam; I shudder to think how toxic the atmosphere would have been in a ground with supporters!

All in all pleased and slightly suprised with this. Very quick appointment so must have been on the cards before Sam was let go.
My Burnley friend said when he left there the club was in a better place than when he started!
Onwards and upwards.

The speed of this appointment does suggest we'd had him already lined up for the post. Either that or he was keen for the job after nearly two years out of work. It doesn't take long to agree terms if both parties want the same thing.

That piece makes for an interesting read and it does gel with my own feelings about formations - they have to suit the players. As I may have said on another thread some time ago, I recall Arthur Rowley adopting a similar approach, and changing his tactics (at about this time of year) to a more defensive system, which wasn't widely welcomed; however, that season (67/8) we finished 3rd in the old Div 3, so there 👌! I also like the length of contract, as it suggests that the Board has the confidence that, in the event of relegation, SC is the man to get us back up, and possibly higher; additionally, if another club were to come sniffing, it could necessitate a significant compensatory wedge coming our way - the equivalent of buying a player with retail value.

Excellent news. To me this is like receiving a year's supply of my favourite ale for Christmas from a tightwad relative who would normally buy me a pair of Rudolph socks from the Pound Shop😀. There are no guarantees in life but hopefully this means onwards and upwards.
