A great performance and loads of character shown to bounce back from going 0-1 down in the first test of the series. Loads of positives from the last two games with young players progressing towards cementing a place in the side.

That's certainly a green pitch at the moment. I would love to see Archer and Wood bowling flat out in tandem on that wicket 😊

I'd still suggest that further changes could be made to the side.
Denly is not likely to be the long term answer to the number 3 position, and not only is Buttler not scoring many runs in red ball cricket nowadays, but his keeping has become untidy, something we can't afford in Sri Lanka.
Not sure what Foakes did wrong not to be included in the present party.
Mat Inns NO Runs HS Ave Foakes - First-class innings 109 172 28 5474 141* 38.01 Buttler First-class innings 105 170 13 5080 144 32.35

I wouldn't even contemplate it at the moment. Let him establish himself in the lower order first. Foakes has been very unfortunate not to get more opportunities, he's one of the best wicketkeepers in the country and has been for a number of seasons.

Root, Stokes, Pope needs to be the 4/5/6 for the foreseeable. Sibley has earned a run alongside Rory Burns, and therefore I’d like to see the promising Crawley develop so he can be a natural replacement for Denly in the next 12/24 months. I’m not sure Foakes is good enough with the bat, but then he wouldn’t have scored less than Buttler in the last year. And if 1-6 continue up do their job, there’s less pressure on the runs and we could maybe just pick the best keeper.

As ESPN say:
Ben Foakes, "a wicketkeeper first and a batsman second..."
Sadly that doesn't fit the England blue print that sadly has been the norm now for years. The wicketkeeper can be average so long as he can score runs.

The wicketkeeper can be average so long as he can score runs. Not just England to be fair, nearly all international teams select on that basis now. Foakes is a capable batsman though, with a good average which makes his omission difficult to understand.

Bob Taylor was also a good ‘keeper but his average was half that of Knott, so Knott was deservedly number 1.

The one I most remember was in the Ashes test match at Trent Bridge in 1977, the game were Sir Geoffrey made his England return after his self imposed exile.

Stokes does seem to let himself down at times but I suppose its his aggression that makes him the special player that he is. Take that away and he wouldnt be the same. You would have thought there would have been some security at the point where the players leave the pitch. Looking at the scene there appeared to be a couple of stewards in the area near to where Stokes left the playing area but they didnt seem to react to the person who was directing the abuse. I think it would have been different had it happened in this country.

Buttler throws away his wicket with a dreadful shot when Woakes was quite capable of forming a decent partnership with him.

Buttler's poor run continues, not that it matters too much in the context of this test match.

England all out for 248 setting South Africa 466 to win. That should be more than enough for a 3-1 series win.
