2.5 overs - WICKET Guptill b S Curran 2 (NZ 6-1)
Martin Guptill's uncomfortable stay is at an end. He tries to pull a shorter Sam Curran delivery, swivels, and ends up hoicking it into the bottom of the stumps. Ugly way to go, but these have been three excellent opening overs for England. The pressure pays off.

4.3 overs - SIX NZ 23-1 New Zealand do know this is a 20-over game, right? Oh, there we go! A big ol' six from Tim Seifert, jumping onto a Sam Curran short ball and dispatching it into the crowd.--- 4.5 overs - SIX NZ 30-1 Now Colin Munro goes big, skipping out of his crease and hoickign Sam Curran back down the ground... ...and a man in the crowd drops an absolute sitter! He's had a 'mare.
--- 5 overs - SIX NZ 36-1 Back to back sixes for Colin Munro! This time he gets down low and ramps Sam Curran's last ball over his shoulder for another big 'un. 21 runs from the over!

6 overs - WICKET Munro c Morgan b Jordan 21 (NZ 39-2) Colin Munro's uncomfortable stay is at an end.
He'd been looking more and more frustrated and it's a tame ending, getting tangled up trying to work a fuller ball away and spooning it straight to the waiting Eoin Morgan at mid-wicket.
10.1 overs WICKET
De Grandhomme c Vince b Rashid (NZ 72-3)
Commentator's curse! Adil Rashid drops a little short and Colin de Grandhomme rocks back looking to dispatch over the square-leg boundary once again but picks out James Vince on the fence. Big breakthrough for England just at the right moment.

I'm still not sure why there is a need to play 5 T20 games. We have to wait until the end of the month for just the 2 test matches. Why not schedule 3 test matches and reduce the number of T20 games?

I'm guessing there will be generally more international T20 games in the build up to the T20 World Cup next year.

www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/50416520Encouraging words from Root and Silverwood about how they want to take the Test Match team forward, but the proof as always will be in the pudding.

www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/50444139A decent effort against New Zealand A with several players amongst the runs, and Denly looking like he has confirmed his fitness. I doubt the side that starts the first test will be much different to that in this game, Woakes for Curran being a possible change.

The batting, on paper, now has a more solid look about it with Root and Stokes at four and five and a proper batter, Pope, at six. They'll be well tested by this New Zealand attack though, particularly if the pitch is helpful to the bowlers. Hopefully Stokes is fit to contribute with the ball as his bowling will certainly be needed. The sides look well matched so hopefully we'll see two competitive test matches, but New Zealand deservedly start as favourites. The BBC have now noticed their mistake and taken Burnley keeper Nick Pope out of the England line up.

What a wonderful change to see a Test Match played at a lovely venue where there is virtually no seating and the spectators either bring their own fold up chairs or sit on the grass.

Joe Root's batting remains a concern for me.
He looked really out of sorts.

Joe Root's batting remains a concern for me. He looked really out of sorts. They were talking about it on TMS. Apparently he's trying to change his batting technique which is not something that can be done easily.

Apparently he's trying to change his batting technique which is not something that can be done easily. Possibly be better if he didn't have to worry about the captaincy? Key stats. 52.80 Joe Root's batting average in his 53 Tests before his first match as England captain in July 2017. 41.07 His average from his 31 Tests since taking over. Stokes seems to have come up on the rails in that respect!

Plenty of positives from the first day, if this is to be England's new approach to batting going forward then it looks like it could reap long term rewards. The selector's faith in Joe Denly was well rewarded, it was a shame he got out to the second new ball when he looked set for his first test century. A big first session at the start of day two, this is a very good batting pitch and a first innings score of 400 is the minimum requirement from this good start.

A poor shot from Stokes to get out for 91, great catch by Taylor though. 277/5, things now in the balance with Curran in next.

Pope also goes to a poor shot, it's frustrating to see him and Stokes both go to poor shots in the first hour after we had batted so well yesterday. 286/6, New Zealand now in the ascendancy.
