Excellent from England after being 0-1 down in this series. So many positives to take from this series in terms of player development.

And Oliver Poole from Coventry's girlfriend has said yes to his proposal on the above twitter account! Perfect day.

Excellent from England after being 0-1 down in this series. So many positives to take from this series in terms of player development. It was a great come back, what with all the illness in the camp and the loss of Burns, Archer and Anderson to injury. Don Sibley the leading England run scorer with 324 runs at an average of 54. Ollie Pope with one hundred and 2 fifties in 5 innings and a whooping series average of 88.66. Zak Crawley also showed promise and Ben Stokes certainly delivered with the bat, averaging over 45. Mark Wood was a revelation with the ball, 12 wickets in just 2 matches, whilst Stuart Broad was England's leading wicket taker with 14 wickets at a cost of 19.42 per wicket. He was consistent throughout the 4 match series. All in all very promising indeed. Next stop Sri Lanka.

Amongst all the chat about some football game tonight. The World Champions are playing their first ODI game today since that famous July day at Lords last year. England currently 82-2 after 15 overs having been put in to bat by South Africa.

Very poor performance by England.
Easy win for SA.

Very much a second XI put out by England but a heavy defeat at the end of the day.

Very much a second XI put out by England but a heavy defeat at the end of the day. Yes a much weakened England team. I think they didn't read the wicket correctly and went too hard too soon, it wasn't a 300+ wicket. A superb innings from De Kock today.

There was also a stat on twitter earlier showing Archer bowled the most overs of any England bowler, across all formats, in 2019.

England unchanged from the first game. England won the toss and chose to field.

Good to see Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali back in the side today, and bowling well. Saqib Mahmood also impressive with the new ball on debut.

I really don't see the point in recalling Jennings. Yes he's a good player of spin so, if he actually gets a game, he may do well in Sri Lanka, but as soon as he's back on a English pitch next summer against a pace attack he'll almost certainly be found wanting again. Sibley and Crawley will open the batting barring something strange happening and Denly is also there as a spare opener if need be.
It's good to see Foakes recalled, but a shame that Moeen still doesn't feel ready to return. There are a couple of warm up games and it will be interesting to see whether Buttler or Foakes gets the nod for the first test.

We’ve seen with the recent New Zealand and South Africa tours how a freak injury or two can cause mayhem, what with Pope having to keep in NZ and Burns doing his ankle playing football.
This squad looks well balanced and I’ve got nothing against Jennings stepping in should something happen to a batsman.
I’d imagine it’d be something like: Crawley, Sibley, Denly, Root, Stokes, Pope, Foakes, Curran, Bess, Wood, Leach
Maybe Broad over Curran.

But the selection of Jennings is unlikely to be anything other than a 'horses for courses' short-term selection for the reasons I gave earlier, i.e. his technical problems against test class pace bowling. Therefore I would have preferred the spare batter to be someone who they thought could have long a term future in the side, for example Sam Hain. It would also have been good experience for a young batter to be on the trip.

If Denly or heaven forbid Root suffer a back spasm you’re bringing someone in with a little bit of know how (not much admittedly!) otherwise the top order is looking even greener.

Your point about the test championship is a good one. It's difficult to see Jennings getting a game this summer though, barring injuries, and assuming Burns returns to fitness/form.

I think a series has to be 3 or more tests to count in the Test Championship

Great to see Dale Steyn back, even if it's only for the T20s.

England managed to snatch defeat from jaws of victory in the first T20.
Needing 7 off 7 Morgan holes out. Curran and Moeen also out in final over and ended up needing 3 off last ball to Rashid but only managed 1 and was run out. Might have been different had Chris Jordan got on strike but watched the entire final over from non strikers end and didn't face a ball.
SA 177-8, Eng 176-9

Two very close and entertaining games, I hope the decider on Sunday is as good. England probably should have won both games but could easily have lost 0-2. Superb batting from Mooen, rightly the man of the match, to really turn things in England's favour with the bat. Then excellent from Curran in the final over after getting clattered early in the over.

As things stand there will be no radio ball by ball coverage of the series in Sri Lanka.

Will there be the "Cricket Social" on the web? That's as close as we might hope to get, but it's a sad decline of the great TMS.
Beeb funding needs sorting if they think a huge pay day for "stars" like Graham Norton and the dreadful Mrs Brown is more important than TMS.
