prior to the game i was apprehensive and just hoped that town would turn up and they did. no surprise to see Charlton come sprinting out of the blocks.
Nolan missed towns best chance, in the first stages of the first half Charlton won a lot of the 50 - 50 balls. who could win the battle in the midfield was pivotal tonight and town got better as the game progressed.
thought Bryn morris and Godfrey were immense tonight both cut out a lot of threats.looking at the stats Charlton had 12 shoots and town had 9. i thought Charlton looked more willing to have a shoot.I was concerned they managed to have five free headers. Whalley was very consistent with his crosses ,free kicks and corners ,we seemed to have a lot of them in the second half but unfortunately no end product.in the second half town pressed higher up the park and counter attacked with speed.
Nolan scored a dream goal scoring a volley as you are running whilst trying to not lean backwards ,get your knee over the ball and hit the target was made to look easy with a sublime goal,it would easy to just focus on the Nolan strike, but towns off the ball movement opened up the space a delightfully weighted header from Payne set up the chance for one of the best goals of the season, we need to keep out feet on the ground , i will view it as we go in at half time leading and anything can happen in the second half.

Well done to the team and fans on a very professional performance, capped by a bit of class for the goal
Bit worried early on when Charlton had three decent chances in the opening ten minutes but from then on we grew into the game and generally controlled things pretty well
Charlton’s main attacking threat seemed to be the full backs going forward and overlapping with their wide midfielders which gave Whalley and Rodman in particular a lot of space - hopefully we can make the most of that on Sunday counter attacking
Thought Godfrey in particular worked exceptionally hard tracking back and covering the defence. Only slight concern was Charlton did look useful from set pieces and we did give some silly free kicks away at times. Need to avoid that in the second leg as it’s a way back into the game for them

Thought the game went very similar to our league game there, Charlton came flying out of the traps but we got more into it and thought there were some immense performances in midfield tonight especially. Just hope we can get a early goal on Sunday to settle the nerves as a one goal advantage will always put the tie on a knife edge.

Bowyer not happy at Carlton Morris staying on the pitch tonight. Thought there were three yellow card offences and that he should have been off. #cafc
Bowyer: "There is a lot of football to be played. I believe my side are still better than their side. They have just beaten us, but my side are better. We'll go there and turn it around." #cafc

Would have been harsh to give either of the possible hand balls as penalties, and felt he let the game be reasonably physical without letting it get out of hand. Tried to let the game flow as well. We’ve had some duff refs this season but thought he was one of the better ones

That’s what I just said to them ‘you are better than them, I’m telling you now, I’ll look you all in the eyes and tell you that you are a better team than them" Im sure PH will pin that one on the notice board tomorrow. It riled me up when i read it so im sure it'll do th same for the players. Also liked Karl Robinson making out that we were celebrating the win abit too much when it was clear all of the players had been told not to celebrate, what a knob.

Was right behind the goal - I don't think I've seen a better Town goal live, or ever in fact. Great performance and Charlton ran out of ideas in the second half. Travelling fans outstanding.

Truly mega day.
My train stopped at Stafford and remembered our away game there ...
Thank you to the club, players, and especially the fans, for a day that will live with me forever.

Then another repeat performance 2 weeks later at Wembley.

What a night. What a goal. What a team. Another memory to add to many more this season.
Much like the away league fixture, we recovered from an ominous first 10 minutes & by the end looked head and shoulders above Charlton. It is however just half way and 90 minutes for them to mount a comeback.
Not one of them let us down, but special shout out for Bryn Morris who was so good that our midfield trio were as good as when Ogogo is in there.
I wish the 2nd leg was tomorrow. Come on Salop!

Just back .
Top battling performance by the team. Midfield 3 were immense. As were the back 4 and deano .
Lee Bowyer can do one. Weasly little runt .
On to Sunday where I hope my larynx can recover in time.

Let the game flow well and didn’t buy in to the soft dives over tiny contact That's what I thought. Smarter than L1 and L2 refs, and more willing to allow a bit of physical play than the prem refs, who give fouls for almost any contact. I was especially impressed with Bolton & Toto in the second half. Charlton came down their left a lot, but those two worked really hard at times to keep them out by the touchline and stop anything dangerous coming in. Excellent.

Just back from another brilliant away game at Charlton. Lee Bowyer is just another bad loser who believes all the hype that they are better than little old us. Well chum just for the record we finished third and you were sixth that’s why you ended up playing us. The season’s results don’t lie.
However, Sunday is another day and another match so just calm down and stop moaning. At the moment you’ve only lost the first half!
What we mustn’t do is go into Sunday with the mindset of MKDongs all those years ago, i.e., that the job is already done - it isn’t

What is that little scrote Bowyer on? We finished 16 points ahead of them. Charlton are probably able to afford better individual players than us but our team ethic throughout the season and last night has been superb.
A great way to win what was on the whole a scr@ppy match, but our "game management" was superb. Bowyer accused us of time-wasting which is incredible bearing in mind what his side got up to in the second half of the league game at our place. Nolan probably added another couple of million to his transfer value with that wonder goal. Godfrey, B. Morris, and the defence, especially Nsiala, were superb.
I winced when Rodman panicked and booted it out for another corner at the end when he had time to clear it up the pitch but overall an excellent performance. A pleasure to see Town back on their game.

A pleasure to see Town back on their game. There were two Charlton players on Rodman when he cleared for that corner one of whom was behind him so had he tried to hook it clear it could have ricoched anywhere. There was also a town player by his feet and the last thing either of them could afford to do was leave it for the other. Top, top play in the circumstances from Rodman. I just hope they can recover in time for sunday. There was only one way to play last night and thankfully that was what we got. High intensity pressing and as good a midfield performance as I've seen all season. Need the same again on tired legs on Sunday. I was also right behind the goal. Was in all the way from Nolan's boot - incredible technique. Probably the best town goal I've ever seen live. Money talks sadly - can't see Nolan staying whatever league we're in but hey ho, what a night. Outstanding support from 777 Town fans - I never thought we would top the league game here, but we just did.

I watched the game from my armchair and had company in the room in the form of Mrs ST. It's fair to say that she has never watched a whole football match and is a novice in the ways of the game.
So I was impressed that she quickly saw that we were bigger, stronger and harder working than Charlton and also that the ref was calm, not easily fooled and allowed the game to flow.
I guess we'll still be bigger, stronger etc on Sunday.
I didn't think I'd seen a better ref all season, although I thought Charlton were lucky to avoid a couple of yellow cards.
Also the best I've seen from Bryn Morris.

What a shame the standard seems to drop with the divisions - our season end could have been quite different.

Time for him to put that right then! I can't remember in which of our home games he was abysmal, but distinctly remember it as one of the worst refereeing performances of that season. How was he at West Ham and Sunderland?

He'll surely score one day soon - he's almost scored a few great goals now!

A word of praise for the away fans too. Great noise came through on TV throughout the game.
I loved the flags at the front. Those guys made a great contrast to the orchestrated employee flag waving at Arsenal when they score. Keeping it real.
