750k is a great deal for a player in the last year of his contract... If he were to leave at the end of his contract I still think we would get a decent fee with a sell on clause through tribunal and could possibly have survived in the league. If he were to go in January I think we would get a similar fee to him going now and could have spent a few months planning to reinvest the money. We aren't light in that area of the team but with Woods playing we have a much better chance of survival. Poor timing if it all goes through. Unless Micky has a target lined up awaiting the Woods deal to go through - a bit like when you have a chain in the housing market. But I suspect it's more likely we'll be using the loan market to strengthen until the transfer window opens again in January.

Hi, Brentford fan here (live in Shropshire so soft spot for Salop) What can we expect from Woods? What are his strengths and weaknesses? Do you think he can cut it in the championship?
Hope you don't mind me asking and good luck for this season.

Woods to Brentford is not a done deal.
Peterborough have matched brentfords bid with the addition of a season long loan deal of one of their players coming in to the meadow.

Hope you don't mind me asking and good luck for this season. He is a top notch, ball playing midfielder, everything we do well on the pitch goes through him, his only weakness is he probably doesn't score enough but that's not really his game. After seeing him against higher ranked clubs in the cups I've no doubt he'll make the step up with ease! You've got a good en coming your way that's for sure.

Not a lot we can do about the timing. It's a silly transfer system and the window should close before the season starts but, if nobody produces an acceptable offer until the last minute, what can you do?
I hope we might have something lined up if we've lost two midfielders now but I suspect it'll have to be loans as shrewsace says.
If reported figures are correct, I don't think we've done badly financially with Woods and Goldson out of contract next summer. We'll never know what a tribunal might have ruled but the clubs involved will have a better idea of that than we do.
The departures are disappointing but always seemed inevitable. The most important thing is that we keep finding and developing young players of this quality.

750k is the minimum I'd be happy with.
Hopefully there is a sell on clause and some other add ons.
Still, about £1.5-£2million (Woods 750k,Goldson 600k,Lewis 250k(?),Ginnelly 100k(?) ) in the bank, which is a hell of a lot for a club like us.

Looks a done deal but as always I will believe it when I see it. He's a pacy, energetic midfielder with superb technique and composure on the ball. He can put in a tackle too and ,with the right coaching, his game does has a lot of potential to improve. Only negative may be he his quite defensive but it's not his job to get goals. Similar to Joe Allen,Leon Britton type of player but he is capable of going on surging runs forward.

Orient and Luton have just received large windfalls from the sale of Odabajo and Gray.

"@sportspeteo: Brentford have agreed a deal to sign highly-rated Shrewsbury Town midfielder Ryan Woods. #brentfordfc #stfc #DeadlineDay"
This guy is usually right, called Mellon joining and Goldson leaving.

No way would we get 750k upfront unless he had an absolutely incredible season and dozens of clubs were wanting him and offer him contracts. Not saying this wouldn't happen mind you. We'd also have little say in sell on fee's etc. 750k plus sell on clause plus increments could be a great deal.

Much as I love Brentford, I would consider this to be a poor move. Must be a lot of desperation around. Very disappointed.

Brentford aren't in our division. Ah. I'm with you. But even so, my point still stands. At this minute in time I would say that any side who can throw that amount of money about is in better stead than ourselves. Although I'd agree that it would be a strange move if Brentford are also after him.

[/quote] If he does have a great season in the higher league then his price will only go one way. He's certainly started off well. The money we'd get in January would be similar to what is being offered now regardless of his contract being up at the end of the season. The money on offer is good and sell ons will be as well. I just question whether the move is beneficial to us at this time in a football sense. Does the extra couple of hundred grand we get now outweigh having him in the team at least up until the end of the January window? I'm not sure. If the deal had been completed before the season started I wouldn't have minded so much but he's been pivotal to our team so far and will be difficult to replace.

At the end of the day we are selling out best player here, shortly after selling probably our next best player (Goldson), both of which had captained the club, and with little to no time find replacements...
If we have not got someone in before the end of the day, I will say i'm a little worried... even if we have almost 1.5 million on the bank.
If it all goes wrong and we get relegated, what the point?
Long way to go to make that judgement though.

Lessons been learnt I'm sure and MM will have some targets in mind.
I hope.

I cant see us relying on loan players THAT extensively again, but I can see it being more than last year.
Will certainly be an interesting few hours i'm sure.
