Those threads are by no means delusional - last season was no fluke (in fact it could be argued the only fluke about it was the fact we lost out to two ex-premier league sides with massive budgets). Last season just shows what can be done with the right management team in place. It can be done again if we can achieve that and defeatism will never get the team higher up in the table. It's not defeatism, more a dose of good old fashioned realism based on the fact that, over the last few seasons we have been bumping along on the 50 points mark. Saying that however there is no reason why we can't improve our lot. With the right recruitment 60 points (as a minimum) should be an achievable target for Sam and the team next season. At least we will be heading in the right direction.

I could put forward the argument that 30 years of L1 and L2 football suggests it was a bit of a fluke, along with countless good managers and players. I wouldn't say it was a fluke, as that implies it was lucky and it wasn't. I would agree that it was exceptional rather than to be expected though.

Mathematically safe. Hopefully the dithering, illogical, maths-illiterate and neurotic on this thread will be able to enjoy their Saturday.

Ideal scenario we’re safe by the Walsall game and there not. We send them down in front of a packed away end.😏 Love when a plan comes together 👌🏻

It's been a mad, bad season; up and down big time but to be fair they still have to go out there and earn the points needed to keep us in the division. And where we're at now is about par for us at this level in recent times. Other than last seasons anomaly around the 50 point mark is the norm. We get a win from the last two games we're done better than usual. So this season is no different to the majority at this level in recent seasons. With last season a one off its back to reality and just trying to stay in the league and get consolidated at this level. So they've done alright I suppose; we've gone around the Wrekin to do so, mind but we've stayed up. We get another go at this level next season. Not an easy task looking to the last few seasons so an achievement of sorts. I guess... Fingers crossed, come August we will start our 5th consecutive league 1 campaign, It’s interesting to look back at our most recent league 1 campaigns and see how we have fared: Season total points league position safe from relegation (points) 2018/19 2017/18 87 3rd +37 2016/17 51 18th +2 2015/16 50 20th +4 2013/14 42 23rd R -9 2012/13 55 16th +7 If we take away last season, our performance over the other 5 has seen us average only 49.6 points per season and one relegation. This season we have 50 points with 2 games to go. We are just about holding our own at this level as things stand. thanks for that; . but what it means to me is by the end of the season we only manage on average to hover at the bottom end of the table. you would hope to some more of an incremental improvement than that. just relived that after a dire season we can relax as the pressure for the Coventry game is now off.

What it also shows is that, apart from 2017/18, we're not improving or progressing.

What it also shows is that, apart from 2017/18, we're not improving or progressing. Or deteriorating or declining. Take a slightly longer term view and we are improving and progressing though. We don't have the feel of a club that "belongs" in League 2, which we certainly did when I became a regular watcher. Five consecutive seasons in League 1? That's surely progress.

Sustaining League 1 football is certainly progress but it would also be nice to see some sort of steady progression in League 1. We should be well placed to achieve that, ie financial strength, youth setup, training facilities etc.

Never going to be anything else in my mind since we got that unexpected win at Gillingham. Not because we were any good but because we were less crap than many of the other teams around us. I still say that come next Saturday 49 points will prove enough to stay up, possibly 48. That is just how crap more than a handful of teams have been this season. Can’t beleive some on here felt we were going to need 52 points to be safe given how poor the teams around us have been.

Quite a few people embarrassed themselves on this thread. it's easy to say we've embarrassed ourselves but it could of gone badly wrong today. Teams fighting to stay up get results out of nowhere, it happens every season. It's fine margins why we are staying up, at this point just one extremely lucky result at Gillingham has kept us up.

I'm optimistic for a top ten finish next season. If we can get to 50 points playing only for 45 minutes in most games then surely a summer of recruitment, coaching and greater consistency will see a substantial improvement.

Or one “bad” win against Wycombe, or disappointing points against Wimbledon, Sc***horpe, Fleetwood, whoever. It doesn’t come down to one result. Just have to face the uncomfortable reality - over the season we were good enough to stay up. Given the permutations, it was never likely to go wrong in these last games, otherwise the bookies wouldn’t have given us the odds they did.

This season’s no different to any other in that respect. We didn’t need 52 points because nobody ever does. It’s just been more competitive than usual with a lot of inconsistent teams. Even Bradford looked pretty good on that first day.

Assuming Bradford, Walsall, Sc***horpe and one from Wimbledon, Southend and Plymouth go down, that still leaves the 2 that don't, Wycombe, Gillingham, Rochdale and Accrington to struggle next season. Plus Bury, who look like they might come up, might well have a significant number of points deducted from them by the EFL plus lose most of their players.
I can see Bristol Rovers doing a lot better, and with their fan base so should Plymouth. But hey, it's not always about fan base. Ask Bradford City.

The only luck at Gillingham was theirs - we could and should have put at least four past them. Oh, and that applies to Barnsley as well.

It was a good performance, what I mean by luck is catching Gillingham having a off day, they were beating all the other side's around them in the weeks building up to the game so I very much think the 3 points there was lucky even though we fully deserved them.

A friend of mine had given up hope a month or so back and said he couldn’t see where the required pints could be gained. I said to him that I thought we could get a result at both Southend and Gills. Why?One of them have lost 13 at home and the other one 12. Our record over the last five years at both grounds has been outstanding, so our performances/results were no surprise to me.

I said a team might get relegated on 50 points this season and it was the case. Plymouth relegated on 50 points on goal difference over Wimbledon and Southend who both survived on 50 points.

With the ball in his hands, he attempted to roll the ball out of play.
But Sc***horpe’s Josh Morris ran over to keep the ball in and then chipped it over Macey into the back of the net.
Outrageous.
A draw would have relegated both sides and Plymouth were understandably furious.
The official Twitter account called it ‘The most unsporting goal in Home Park history before adding ‘Unbelievable. Just unbelievable.’

So as pointed out when we were on 50 points - that we were safe and wouldn’t get relegated this season with the other poor teams around us. Our GD would have been good enough to keep us up even without the 2 points we have picked up this last week. Glad we didn’t have to put it to the test though........

My point was not related to Town but independently regarding the possibility that a team might go down on 50 points this season. When I originally made that point others told me it wouldn't happen etc, but it did.
