My goodness that was a classic team set up by the odious toad Robinson. I thought players were not allowed to surround the ref. I think three or more players were around the ref at least ten times in the game. They looked a decent side when they played it but what niggly rubbish to watch. Odious toad - love it!!! But come on Dave, we know from Rochdale that surrounding the ref is the ‘in thing’ at the moment!!

whilst no team scores from every chance ,we potentially could have scored four more goals. there keeper looked very wobbly when pressed / run down by our forwards. there defence was less than convincing especially when we got behind them.i think if we had pressed them more for sustained periods of time, this could have turned into a goal fest for town .
however considering we are still not back to full strength i thought we did really well in this game and especially when the team knew how vital this result was after the defeat.

Made hard work of it today but a good game with lots of chances. Certainly had a entertainment value today but all them missed opportunities could of cost us. Was a bit disappointed that Blackburn won but Portsmouth are winning so could be dropped points for Wigan.

Gotta pick fault with Payne today, thought he was way too casual at times. Thought Beckles did really, really well. Nothing fancy mind but solid in defense. Nolan his usual neat and tidy self, making himself available again and again and making things come together. He's one hell of a find for us. I thought we played one of the best games we've had in a while today. Some of the football was a joy to watch. Which makes it all the more perplexing as to why we were desperate to hear the final whistle.

Payne had two chances in the box and went for the tap in ( i agree it looked very casual ) but his third chance when he was one to one was the worst miss. he has had a few substitutions were he looked to going through the motions, but today he looked like he did early in the season and was a lot more fired up and he really worked hard ran down a lot of balls to press the keeper and proved a handful for there defenders .also he covered a lot of ground coming back to help the defence adding his height for the corners. he is our top goal scorer

Town looking tired. Too much stop start. Payne nothing like the target man of Morris. Glad Bolton is back, and Thomas looking good, but Godfrey off the pace and Whaley delivery poor. Godfrey definitely picked it up in second half, and still think Whaley wasn’t at his best but can’t argue with two goals. Bolton was excellent and think MOM between him and Beckles. Payne did a lone front man ok at times and pressed the defence well but can’t help thinking if we had a top class striker in place of Payne he would have had a hat trick today. Thomas faded and think he would have been replaced if Rodman or Lowe was on the bench. Lowe coped well most of time but shows how useful Beckles height is at left back as thought Lowe was caught out a number of times in the air. Bryn Morris looks more capable, and think he can continue to deputise Ogogo. Would like to see second goal again as just seemed to come out of nothing. Definite deflection but presume must have have a lot of spin on it as Henderson still looked like he had it covered from where I was. He does worry me with this antics and winding up of their supporters. Do that at 4-0 maybe but not 3-2 up in a very important game. Still, great to see passion and his distribution was lovely at times. Most important thing is 3 points and no red cards today 👍

Excellent 3 points today and deserved the victory. Beckles and Nolan superb and can't argue with Whalley's two goals. Payne looked knackered at about 70 minutes but did well enough up front. On now to Wembley and hopefully Blackburn slip up against an in-form Southend side.
What a season!

Portsmouth 2 Wigan 1 FT. Well done Pompey! Would have preferred Blackburn losing but Wigan losing isn’t going to do any harm. Well done Pompey 👍

Well done Pompey 👍 From what I've seen of the Blackburn highlights, MKD just weren't able to cope with the pace of Armstrong. His signing by Blackburn in January has really helped their cause. 9 goals in their last 9 games.

Well done Pompey 👍 yes we need them both to slip up, Wigan still have two games in hand and Blackburn have one game in hand but all we can do is try and win all the rest of the games and hope they slip up

Sadly though looking at the remaining fixtures for all 3 of us I can’t see too many points being dropped by the others, hopefully us too but it’s likely that we have lost out on the top 2 places with the result at Rochdale. Hope I’m wrong .

Rochdale result was such a killer: 3 more points and I’d be backing us as favourites. Still, Wigan dropping points means they’re very much left with work to do.

MOM for me was Beckles. He was constantly clearing the ball from danger. Also Bryn worth a mention, he worked so hard again today and shame his shot hit the bar. WhalleyI thought was playing better today and of course scored 2 goals so well done to him. I thought Nolo looked like his knee was giving him Jip first half, but he was back on form 2nd half. I felt disappointed with Deano's performance again today, he seems to have lost that energy he used to have and conceded again. Good game, as usual on edge of seat and anxious towards the end when oxford given the free kicks close to goal, but we did it, and just heard Wigan lost! So excellent day for us.

His performance deserved a goal, maybe just shy of full match fitness & confidence. He was clearly beating himself up a lot ( off the ball) over the missed chances. We were more of an attacking threat today & in part that has to go down to Payne starting. Show some patience with Stef and he will come up with the goods. Has to start games now as we need the wins.

Agree that Payne's running in behind was a big factor in how effective we were going forward. Morris has done really well by all accounts in the run in for us but they are very different types of forwards - Payne is less adept at holding the ball up, but it has the knock-on effect that our attacking play is quicker. Games when we'll have more of the ball and generally be on the front foot - and so not having Morris as an out-ball - are ones Payne can definitely do a job for us in. Not sure I agree that Morris "can't" start now, though. Offers us a lot.

Don't get me wrong I love Morris, think he's been our most underrated player this season ( I'd still be tempted to start Morris in the 2 away games) but at home we've got to be more pro-active now & for that reason I'd start Payne up top.

Not sure if anyone else has noticed or mentioned this elsewhere, and if so disregard. PH in his post match interview seemed somewhat peeved with Rodmans back injury. Sounded a bit like the boss at work tired of the malingerer kind of attitude. Might be me reading too much into it but seemed less than impressed? Anyone else get that vibe from the what he said on radio Salop?

Similar comments made earlier in the season as well about Rodders by our leader

The first 15 minutes of the second half was probably the best we have played in a good few weeks, we should have been 5-0 up before Oxford got a goal back out of nothing.

Agreed. It was the ‘you'll have to ask Alec’ or something like that. I remember a month or two back, Hurst said something similar about Rodman when he missed a game.

It's a back injury, and therefore it's very difficult for the player and therefore the manager to know when he'll be ready to return Also why would a player malinger from the first team days before a cup final, when such an action could mean he's left out?!

That is exactly how I understood the manager's comments. He has no idea with a back injury whether it is long term or here today gone tomorrow, neither does the player or probably even the physio.
