One goal from open play in the last 5 games and one penalty. Not good enough if we want automatic promotion.
Yes you can say look where we were last season but thats gone and we are now second in the league and if we want to stay there we have got to get a goal scorer in.
Payne and Morris for all their hard work are not going to do it for us.
The system we play does not help, very hard to break down great defence and battling midfield. But we cant rely on always keeping a clean sheet.
It might be years before we are in this position again so lets not waste the opportunity.

From where I am looking in from the outside to speak rather than actually going to games it is quite clear to me that this is the case as well.
Its great that we are virtually impenetrable at the back but we need to be able to also guarantee a goal or two every game as well and currently we can't.
It's the only thing that is likely to foil our chances of going up automatically IMO>

I am sure Hurst knows this. His experiment with the formation last night and switching to 442 against Blackburn suggests he is trying new ideas. If you stop our wingers in this current system then you pretty much nullify our threat. We need different options to change it up.

I will also add 4 of them 5 games have been against West Ham twice, Blackburn and Wigan. Each defender is probably worth more than our forwards in them teams.

Think another winger is important, too. At the moment we're heavily reliant on Whalley for creating chances. Could do with a clone of him on the left.

But we are 2nd in the league so far more than mid way through the season without mythical goal scorer?

We need more player choices in attack but we don't need to change the way we play. We're second because the whole team defends so well and we've had enough in attack to score vital goals regularly.
If we change our system trying to score more goals, we'll have to sacrifice some of that defensive solidity. Since that's been the foundation of our success, that wouldn't seem to be a clever move - that would be more of a wasted opportunity than continuing with the system that's bringing us our best season in years.
We play 4-5-1 or 4-3-3 or, I gather, 3 at the back last night (with hindsight I wish we'd done that at Blackburn). All of those suit us - I don't believe 4-4-2 does.
I'd like to see a couple of attacking players brought in to give us more options. I don't want to see us sacrifice Ogogo or Godfrey so that we can play a second striker.

I think 4-4-2 suits when we're chasing a goal and the other team are sitting back - it allows the striker to be far less isolated which is the biggest issue with our system (Payne having hit 10 goals this season does suggest he knows where the net is). It's useful to have in the arsenal but I agree it isn't likely to become our new first choice system and rightly so. I do think the drawback with the "we've done well so far so shouldn't change" argument is twofold; firstly that teams play very differently against a side who are second halfway through the season (and on whom they will have far more scouting data now) than they did earlier on in the season, and secondly it ignores the fundamental difference in our system with Beckles in place of Brown. If Lowe comes in as first choice LB that might offset that change and allow Rodman to slot in again but at the moment he's almost a wasted attacking option given that so much of what he offers is his covering defensive work; work which isn't necessary with Omar being far more reserved than Junior down that left side.

not being picky at all,but I've watched whalley a few times now,and to be honest if he's playing a winger he should be beating his man on the outside then crossing the ball in to the striker(s).I just don't see it from him at the moment.I really do think we need another winger asap, but it's only my feeling at the moment

I bet Huddersfield would have liked one 90 minutes without conceding against West Ham, let alone two!

An available goal scorer is as rare as hens teeth in the transfer window.

Sadly Payne is off the boil and squandered a golden opportunity to get our noses in front.
Last night was a classic example where on numerous occasions we got ourselves into a shooting position and were too timid to pull the trigger. Nolan, Morris and Godfrey to name just three culprits.
We need a striker in the vein of young Eaves (first time around) who can create goals just by themselves and were prepared to let fly from distance.
Getting better wingers doesnt solve the problem of there being no one in the box to get on the end of a cross

IMO morris is far better than Payne at the moment . Payne is the one who is getting all the great chances . Bury , Bradford , Mk dons , last night ,absolute sitters . I also think at home we could go 4-4-2 , we don't need the extra man in midfield , and to me Nolan has been below his best for a few games . Looked like he got injured last night too . The only option we have left without changing formation is the shop , who I think could excel in the lone striker role . From what I've seen his hold up play is first class . And the wingers need to get the ball in the box more. Admittedly a lot of the time there's no one in there but last night on numerous occasions we had chances to put it in the box and didn't . I can't remember the last time Payne or morris scored a league goal , it's time for the shop .

Payne might be missing chances but I can't remember the last time Morris was in a position to miss a chance. I like them both but it's always tough for a lone striker. We need the wingers getting to the back post when the ball's on the other side, and/or a midfielder breaking into the box, to be that second striker. I can't agree about playing 4-4-2 at home. It may feel like we don't need the extra midfielder but that's generally because the three have won the midfield battle and we look very secure. Take one out and it'll be a very different story. You don't weaken your area of greatest strength to improve other areas. I'm sure we'll drop a lot more points at home if we change a system the players are used to and which is succeeding.

I think 4-4-2 suits when we're chasing a goal and the other team are sitting back Didn't work at Bury - or ever look like working! Neither did the starting formation. I've seen us only a small number of times this season but we've quite consistently had to chase a goal when I have - Plymouth and Bradford both games when Morris came off the bench to partner Payne and we looked far more threatening; didn't work at Bradford but it could easily have done so.

From a keepers perspective, Payne is making it more difficult for himself by cutting down the available angle. Instead of going wide, he would be better cutting in thus giving him more of the goal to aim at and making the keeper's job a bit more difficult. If he had taken that option last night he may have bought a penalty from the defender trying to catch him.

Our lack of goals is as much down to our wingers being anonymous in the last few games. Whalley looks totally devoid of confidence and at times last night he just wasn't switched on.

Both seem to have dipped in form recently - inevitable, but difficult for the team when it happens to both simultaneously. If we can freshen up the team out wide, Morris and Payne should get more chances. We can't afford the price of a striker who can do it all on his own.

You're right he should have just run straight at Joe and tumbled as soon as the defender got any contact from behind. I hate myself even thinking like it but that is how you win football matches these days.

Couldn’t believe how wide Payne himself last night for his golden chance. Poor. He’s way, way off being the player he was at the start of the year. For all of the talk about goals, and yes I know that’s what a striker is for, but I think Carlton Morris has been consistently turning in man of the match displays during his recent spell as a regular starter. We are a far better unit with his link up play, strength and tenacity to always make sure he is the right side of his man - something Payne rarely is.
Personally I think Rodman is the weak link in the attacking third. He’s had a good season but it’s been ages since I’ve had faith in him producing some quality. Whalley has his off days but these are less often and he’s regularly our biggest threat. Opposition fans as recently as Blackburn noted how good Nolan is so I’m not sure it’s fair to say he’s lost form either.
Whoever we play, we aren’t going to score many. It’s our system. Fitter, faster, stronger. Tenacity, pressing, incredibly well drilled. The midfield 3 and this formation are the reason for being where we are. Ogogo Nolan and Godfrey are our best players. Leave it as it is, plenty of 1 0 wins left in us.

If we don't get promotion to the Championship then we can guarantee that he will have moved heaven and earth to ensure we gave it our best shot within the resources we have available.
