With our defensive side of the game obviously superb with no team scoring more than one goal a game against us this is Only a slight criticism and probably why we struggle to score goals...when other teams attack they go forward in numbers 3,4,5 players getting into the box. We only have 2 maximum. Jon Nolan should be further up the pitch constantly breaking into the box a bit like he did for the goal Saturday along with a winger and striker. Should Paul Hurst address this??

I was thinking at half time yesterday how we could get 2 strikers on the pitch and not be left short in midfield. Only thing I could come up with was swapping beckles for a striker and going 3-5-2 with Whaley and rodman as attacking wing backs . We are definately short of body's in the box when we get in good positions out wide. I think we have deano to thank aswell for our goals conceded column .

against blackpool there was at least three crosses that were begging for someone to take a gamble.i do agree that Nolan playing in the box could add to the attacking options but he also does the role of link player in the midfield

Just look at the stats. One shot on target all match I think. Which was for the goal. We really do have to sort that out. Otherwise we will not win games. Sounds obvious but true. One shot on target all game is not good enough

One shot on target all game is not good enough I only watched the 2 minutes of highlights through Twitter and saw two shots on goal by Nolan alone.

I do sometimes question how these stats are worked out particularly when you see the breakdown of possession percentage.

When Burton Albion won promotion to the Championship 2015/16 season, they finished second to Wigan, scoring a mere 57 goals, BUT only conceding 37 goals. If you win 1-0 you get 3 points, exactly the same as if you win 4-0. Goals for , as far as I' m concerned are not the criteria, it's the goals against column that decides if you are in with a chance of promotion. The way the tables look at the moment it seems that we are on course to emulate Burtons achievements.

Number of men in the box is definitely an issue, I lost count of the amount of times Carlton Morris had the ball out wide but had no one in the middle.
The problem with going 4-4-2 is who do you play in the centre of midfield, we already have an issue with finding room for 3 so who do you drop?

If we stop playing three in the middle, I've no doubt we'll concede a lot more and drop down the table. Yes, the wide players and midfielders must get forward as much as they can but we're built to be solid first and foremost. Not always good to watch but very hard to break down. We're playing to our strengths as we are. That means we won't score as many as most, if not all, of our rivals. But as long as we concede a lot fewer than them (Wigan apart), we'll keep challenging. I agree with haughmond; if our goals against average starts to creep up, our challenge will falter.

Key for town is that they don't create as many chances as other sides but due to the fact we're usally good for a clean sheet we only need to take one chance. It sometimes might not be pretty but it's been hugely succesful so far!

14 goals against, with 2 of them coming via penalties in the Rochdale game which we won anyway, is the best defensive record in the entire Football League other than Wigan.
All 3 of our losses have been by one goal.

Whats the obsession with the goal scoring. If we are winning games.... who cares. I will take a 1-0 win anyday.

What does, the fact we've got a better defensive record than almost everyone else? Or the fact that we only lost by single goal margins? If we'd scored in the games we lost then we wouldn't have lost, but every team in the league can say that and nobody's lost fewer games than us. The fact that we're 2nd, with the 3rd best goal difference says to me we've got it right and changing the way we set up is less likely to improve us than undo the good things we're doing.

With Grodfrey/morris as defensive mids. And Nolan linking the play, what is Ogogo's role? Should he be linking up play instead or should he be the one charging into the box?

I mean we're only 2nd in the league giving nigh on every team we've played a good game including the so called big boys of the league of which only one has beaten us through a miraculous own goal.
I'd love to win every game 4-0 , but to be honest I'll take our record and the manner in which we win every day of the week.

Defences win titles. Perhaps we’re guilty of not getting enough bodies in the box at times, but also we’ve got a very disciplined 11 who work uses for each other. We have no ‘luxury’ players in our first 11. Perhaps this is why we struggle/look lethargic when Dodds comes in sometimes. It’s noticable he hasn’t got the speed/stamina of some of our other midfielders.

I will take a 1-0 win anyday. if we want to do something this season , and be really critical ( which is harsh cus the team is doing so well ). Then it needs addressing . We are winning games , but we could and should have beat Bradford, bury and Milton Keynes , if we had put the ball in the net . No obsession, just a fact , the goals have dried up abit .

Conceded against West Ham , Everton , soutampton - all average teams . Do you think they won't win the title ? Goals win games , not clean sheets .

Needs must.
Wigan have Nick Powell, while Blackburn have Bradley Dack. We don't have the resources they have and it's been obvious since August how we have step up.
44 points before Xmas, something is working.
Also, the team of 78/79 didn't bang them in either.

Over the past six seasons, apart from the Wigan promotion at least one of the teams each season has been promoted with a goal difference of roughly +30. If we continue as we are, we are well on the way to achieving that figure. I can't understand the criticism levelled at the team when we are in such a great position leading to the Christmas period. None of us thought we would be in such a place at the start of the season. I am sure the Manager can see our shortcomings and will do his best to improve on these areas without having to upset the balance of the team.

PH recognises that we will always struggle to compete with the teams with big budgets. It is probably cheaper to strengthen a defense than an attack. Yes it would be great if we could score more goals but all credit to PH for his clever tactics in guiding the team to a fantastic position going into the mid season period.

City have the best midfield and attack in the Premier League. They don't have the best defence. They play to their strengths. We don't have the attacking firepower of Wigan or Blackburn but we can defend as well as anybody (arguably better). We play to our strengths. That gives us our best chance of competing with the other top clubs. Why would you want to change a method of playing that has made us more successful than anyone on here could have expected? As I said before, every team in the league can say their results would have been better if they'd scored more - Wigan and Blackburn when they came here for starters. If we'd tried to play more expansively, I've no doubt some of our draws and one goal wins would have seen us drop points because we weren't as solid as we might have been. A 1-0 win is as good as any other.

Their goal scoring is a bonus. Liverpool have an incredible attack (yet have scored less than boring Man United) yet find themselves much lower in the table.

The big teams in a division are expected to do it at both ends of the pitch, we’re not. Burnley are a far better comparison if you want to cite an example from the premier league.

Listening from a distance, set pieces seem would be where I would target for more goals. Delivery of free kicks and corners seems pretty inconsistent at best. I remember Gary Peters targeting this issue and got a fairly ropey team getting goals.
Agree with most that we shouldn't change the system, just tweak to improve. Worth remembering that Leicester's champions had a run of 1-0s ground out when teams put men behind the ball and Huddersfield won promotion last season with a negative goal difference.
