Suggest this pub as the place for a pre-match rendezvous. Just off Campbell Road. Usually where the Stoke fans congregate.
Bit of a walk for the Britannia. But you cannot park much nearer without parking at the ground, which I wouldn't advise.
Maybe a bit of a B&A get together and perhaps we could get the players back there after the game.

Excellent stuff Sean.
I'll contact JudyS tomorrow and see if there is a chance of b&a getting a block of tickets together for the game - it'll be easier to make an atmosphere/ get songs going if people are sitting by others they know.

I know this area of Stoke very well as both sets of grandparents lived there, my parents were married in the area and I still have some relations there.
This was my paternal grandfather's local as he used to play bowls on the green near by - one playing partner being Jim Bob McGrory when he was Stoke City manager.
My maternal grandmother used to serve behind the bar and play the piano at The Gardeners Retreat in the 50s and 60s.
My dad used to work just up London Road at Campbell Tiles (part of the H&R Johnson group - "Cristal tiles" for all DIYers) - but the site has long since been made into a supermarket car park.
Maybe we should run the idea past laptop first - although it is the pub for Stoke fans I can't think they will be turning out in force for this?
Another alternative in thearea is Uncle Tom's Cabin, but thats a bit run down and rough even by the standards of Boothen to be honest.

I have been in the Gardeners before a match at Stoke, but not for many years. Used to drink in a few pubs in that area 30+ years ago, when I went to the Poly.

Yes, there used to be student accommodation along London Road near to a doctor's surgery, just off a private road.

After the game I suggest we all head back to Shrewsbury for a big night out whatever happens

Some mates had a rented house just behind the Stoke End (I can't believe I've forgotten the name of the road), and we used to drink in the Red Lion, but it was knocked down soon after, for the D road to come through

Just realised that with a 1pm kick off and a 12pm opening time, not much time for a pre-match beer.

I shall be cheering you lads on as a guest of stuttgarter and my immediate thought was the Gardeners. They usually run buses to and from the ground for those too bone idle to make the 20 minute or so walk, I'll ask on Sunday if they plan running them on the 16th. Usually a good bit of atmosphere in there without the less savoury elements. Other options are the Power League bar opposite the ground (4 quid parking I think), or the Harvester (no colours allowed though). Both are ok but not real pubs obviously. There'll also be shuttle buses from Stoke town...difficult to know whether to recommend that or not? Usually a bit of a no go area on matchday but I wouldn't have thought there'd be too many problems on this day. Anyway, looking forward to it, come on the Shrews!

Spoke to one of the few Stoke fans we have at work today. Recommended the Gardeners as the ONLY place to drink before the game, and backed up the comments made on here about the parking at the ground..............

What time will the Gardeners be opening on that Sunday?
If it is midday and a 20 min walk to the ground, I don't see much point in having a drink there. If it will open at 11am, then we are talking!!

Is the beehive the 'harvester pub' your talking about Sean? I thought that would be nearest to the ground!

My car load would be there for 11.30, if the away supporters and some of the other B&A regulars promised to turn up would that make it worth him opening?
