Rainbow Records - What was the one opposite Woolies with the listening booths?
Jean Jeanie - My mate worked there and remember him getting mugged taking the takings to Barclays one day, smashed over the head with an iron bar.. They eventually caught the Scallies (clue) who did it.
I remember a tailor called Jacksons on Pride Hill (I think) where you went to buy your trousers with massive waist bands and as many buttons as you could get.
I remember the Cascades and St. Mary's (rough as F**k) for a teenager but great times.
Nights out would include the Cascades, the Sabrina Club, The Oak, oh happy days..

I sense the possibility of someone compiling a book from all these reminiscences! I'll add some of mine. Orange flavoured ice cream at Sidolis. The Raven Hotel. . The Sidolis used to live on Granville Street, around the corner from where I lived and, as a small boy, Mr Sidoli used to give me a lift to school. His daughters were always horrible to me, but he drove a big black Daimler which made up for it. My late Aunt was involved in a campaign to save The Raven Hotel and the old Market Hall, sadly it failed. I still think the new market hall is a monstrosity.

Agree completely about the market hall, but the sidoli girls were rather nice.

The Pengwern up Coleham

On the Tandy shop story. I actually worked in Shoplatch in the early 80's in the Shroppy Star office, and my office looked down at Tandy's store. I remember watching Michael Jacksons "Thriller" video from my offcie window on a Tandy TV in their window. First time i had ever seen Thriller, as of course there was no MTV then

Always finished a Saturday night in there... I remember going to the Riverboat in the early 80's, got very drunk and was woken by the cleaner at about 2 a.m, I was fast asleep on the bog A very drunken walk back to Meole that night...

The "Bloodtub" & the real "Hole in the Wall" getting served in the Elly at 10 in the morning when there was licensing hours. The White Hart in Mardol was a big Town supporters pub, along with the Wheatsheaf & Nags Head. Anybody remember the light up plan of Shrewsbury o/s the library - you'd press a location button & it would light up on the map. By the way the "Witch's name is Vera, and apparently she has two lovely daughters .

Lyons tea shop on Pride Hill, Barker Street Bus station, Midlands Rd buses, Away fans coaches parked around the Abbey. Football special trains with away fans coming direct from the station. I also remember the "witch" selling papers near the station - she looked 100 40 years ago! Buying the "pink" on a saturday evening to get a report of the away match (and score).

Spoon collar shirts. What was the hi-fi shop over the Welsh Bridge called? Chinese take-away nearby (chicken and chips with gravy chinese style!) Fire at a furniture shop in Barker Street c.1970 John Phillips lying unconscious at the Station End. Friendly v. Stoke City but Gordon Banks did not play but signed autographs after the game. Pre-season friendly v. Montrose. Visit from the Queen.

What a great thread. Ah, so many memories. Yes, remember the mongolian restaurant, Rainbow records, even the restaurant in wollies.
So much has changed over the years, and if i followed my footsteps from the railway station down over the english bridge today, so little remains from when i'd tread the same path in the 1980's. No woolworths, no wimpy, even the post office has moved on. By the time i'd be nearing the site of the Old Meadow i'd be quite emotional but then, like an old friend she appears to smooth my worried brow and reassure me everything is going to be ok... Three cheers for the sex shop at the bottom of the Kop.

no A5 extension, when you could walk from Bayston Hill to Meole over fields. Every school day at Meole I used to do this. Call for my mate and his brother on Overdale Rd, get some fags from the machine OUTSIDE the shop , walk down the top end of Pulley Lane to the farm and then over the fields and the little footbridge over the Rea Brook and into the newer bit of Meole village. Sometimes we'd walk all the way down Pulley and cut through the woods by the back of Meole estate. Wasn't there a rope-swing there too. Sod this I'm getting too nostalgic I hate to say this, but the Shrewsbury that I grew up in has gone now and it's not coming back. Pretty much everything on this thread has brought back happy memories, but that's all they are and Shrewsbury is now very much like any other medieval town in the country, full of chain stores and chavs. I'll always be a Shrewsbury boy at heart, but the place I loved is a million miles away now.

St George's Junior school divided into single sex boys and girls schools.
Midland red buses that had cords for bells.
Bradley Manor (now to be seen on the Severn Valley Railway) taking over from heavier locomotives and hauling the Cambrian Coast Express from Shrewsbury.
Machines on the station where you could punch out your name on a metal strip.

Go bananas in the riverside centre Go Bananas - that was an awesome place! There was a facebook group called 'I survived the health hazard that was Go Bananas' which says it all really! SY3 - you are right, Beijing Terrace moved to Radbrook Green from the old Barker Street car park. Think that car park was demolished in 2000, I was at sixth form at the time and I remember them building the Bar Med site shortly afterwards. Beijing Terrace moved into the site next to Radbrook chip shop after they rebuilt it (it burned down in 2000, the chippy returned but the Indian stayed empty until Beijing Terrace relocated there instead) I remember the little chippy between Jacksons (source bar) and the sixth form. Speaking of source bar, that place has always been terrible, in all it's various guises. A lot more recent here but whatever happened to the plans they had to rebuild the Riverside centre, demolish the (now) Onyx/Blu club and rebuild it on the site between the back of the Pride Hill and Darwin centres (back of McDonalds)
