Two way traffic on Pride Hill.
Squaddies and locals fighting up and down the Mardol.
The floating restaurant.
Coleham being a night out on its own with no need to cross the river into town.

The Bus station at Barker Street A Tesco in the town centre A computer shop on Wyle Cop called 'STD' The (All?) American Drugstore in the Charles Darwin When Smiths was Menzies and when Smiths was further down by where Hawk Cycles is now. When Smiths had a branch in both centres. Ebbrells's fishing tackle. No gyratory, no Old Potts Way, no Sainsbury's, no A5 extension, when you could walk from Bayston Hill to Meole over fields. Fountains outside the Shirehall lit in different colours (at night, bit of a hazy, early) childhood one, that. Gaudy Christmas lights, not the boring 'tasteful' ones we have now. Everyone in the square on New Years Eve. When the tip was near Emstrey (that sort of direction anyway), not Battlefield. The Empire cinema Sidolis where the Bellstone is A video shop in Coleham Hasty Tasty (unfashionable fast food joint!)

The Green Dragon, end of Barker Street. The Chanticleer. Two lanes of traffic up Pride Hill. Music Hall dances, and seeing Amen Corner performing. Cattle Market in Smithfield, and the Poulterers on Roushill Bank. The Plough in the Square. Durants where you could hear records in a booth before buying. The CO-OP when they put money etc in a tube and sent it whizzing along a long brass pipe. Watching the town from the Enclosure. Colin Whittaker on the left wing. Workington Town v Town. Being plonked on the wall on the Riverside when little, so i could see. Alf Wood ending Malcolm Yardleys career with a tackle when we played Tranmere. The big communal baths in the changing rooms at the Meadow. Queing from the top of Dogpole for F.A.Cup tickets. The Radbrook Hotel, The Oak Hotel, The Beauchamp Hotel. Catching the S14 into town. Fish and 4d worth. Yep, thats 4D not 4P. Dances at the Lord Hill. Harry Fentons. Jacksons. Razor cut hair from Pete on the English Bridge, then a nice bit of friction rubbed in. Georges Howells Mens Barbers, took ages cos he used to do " deals" on the phone in the back room, and give you s**te racing tips. Mountfords. Proper Levi Jeans. Broques. The Pink on Saturday. Pumping out the Meadow pitch. Buying Ice cold milk in a wax carton from a vending machine in Barker Street. Shrewsbury Baths. ( Fff****in freezin) Small cubicles along the side and wire baskets for your clothes. Watching football on the Harlescott Rec. and smelling the dubbin on the balls when you pinched them from the back of the net to kick about with your mates.

I remember when a trip to Telford was something special Strange but true I remember going to Telford loads when we were kids as it was the magical place with a TEN Screen cinima! Littlewoods Cafe was always a fav when my nan and grandad took us into town, and I hand more than one birthday party in Wimpys! I remember when the first view you had of returning back the Shrewsbury (from Telford) was as you rounded the corner of the ICI factory (that caught on fire that one time) near Leaton on the old A5... to be fair the view from the new A5 is actually much better! I remember when Battlefield was still mainly a feilds! I also remember when Co op was where Matalan is now in Battlefield, we did all our shoping back there in 80's late 90's. Searching for Atari ST game in Tandy which was under the Markent across where Maplin is now! Thought of another one, Sidoli'd the ice cream/cafe where KFC was now Soy... everytime we went to the quarry as kids it was ice cream from Sidoli'd (thought the window)... I can beat that I remember walking from behind the esso on harlescott lane all the way to ennerdale drive It was just a field with some cows in it Almost too hard to believe that now First saverite appeared, now where Charlies is Then either payless diy where charlies used to be or the coop was next Many hours spent shoplifting over there ;-) Only joking Scooter remembers. Battlefield when it was just called field ;-)

Tiffany's was so bad it was good. (Lager'n black anyone?) Dandelion & Burdock from 'off sales' at a pub near the station (heading north). Sea scouts. Rolls Royce Motors. The Harlescott Inn (anyone remember Peggy the barmaid - my mum?) Was Sidoli's for posh kids? Milk machine (wax cartons) at Barker Street bus station (RIP). Really cold. Vagg's Motors day trips to Rhyl/Aberystwyth. (Must be why I like The Welsh - but not sheep!) Milk bar next to the cinema (was it the Empire or Granada up from the railway station?) - only taken there once. Standards of living are so different now. My kids are amazed that going out for a meal was a rarity back in the 60s and 70s. Aberdeen Angus steak bar somewhere in town - my 18th birthday in 1974. First meal out with friends (from Shrewsbury School of Art situated above the Wakeman Grammer School). LIVING GODS: Alf Wood, Jimmy McLaughlin, Trevor Meredith, Peter Dolby.... A youthful Graham Turner (player before manager).
Oh yes - and STFC having a football league team better than (former) division 4! (How bloomin' long before we get out of this basement level of existence?)
Oh, happy days.... (Pre-Cameron)

Can anyone remember what shops were underneath the multi-storey in Barker Street? I think a Games Workshop was on the end? Also what year was it pulled down, even though it's not too long ago it does seem ages to me. Anyone have a picture of it they can upload?
A book of all these memories should be created with the title 'The Changing Face of Shrewsbury' and should have pictures too if possible.
