Agree that the timing of a rearranged date may still make it an attractive fixture but 3rd v 5th on Boxing Day after a couple of weeks without footy would have been a +7k crowd IMO, cold or not. If the game is off and therefore rescheduled after the Bury away game in January, it will be provide us with another key home fixture (alongside the home games v Chesterfield, Wycombe, Port Vale) later in the run in.

Maybe, but a lot of people might well have trouble getting to it and are unlikely to want to go outside in bad conditions - and even if it does survive the pitch inspections there's always the danger that it could be a farcical match like Ipswich Leicester was on saturday or that it could be abandoned, and that would put people off attending too.

Be a real shame to miss the big Boxing Day crowd - a rearranged game won't be on a Saturday and we'd never get as many midweek, even if both clubs are still as high as now (& they might not be by then).
Just been to the Meadow - the car park is clear of snow but looks very icy and the approach roads and pavements still have lots of snow on them. I hope to be amazed by the game going ahead but I think it'd have to warm up first and that's not being forecast. Disappointing, but could be even worse - Sheff Wed (whose game at Tranmere on Boxing Day is already off) have now also had to postpone both their Christmas/New Year home games because of burst pipes that can't be repaired until it thaws, when more pipes are expected to burst!
Massive fixture pile up ahead at this rate. The rearranged Accrington and Oxford games give us 7 games in 3 weeks in late Jan/early Feb. That could make or break our chances.

Just read the "volunteers needed" thread and maybe I was too pessimistic earlier. Sounds like a great effort by everyone so hats off to you all. If the car park's gritted now, who knows? Fingers crossed - we'll certainly be there if it's on.

Spoke to the groundsman today. The pitch is fine. The covers themselves only protect temperatures less than -5 if those temperatures do not continue for more than one night - however having a considerable amount of snow on top of those covers do hence why the pitch is protected.
Yes there are arguments for a postponement but the idea that it will be postponed and rearranged for April is never going to happen and as has been pointed out any replay would occur midweek when crowds will be lower regardless.
I really hope we get this one on, and feel there has been sufficient planning by the club (and support from the fans) to do everything possible for this to happen.

Lets hope we do not get any burst pipes-------------because the time it takes to get anything done around the Stadium means that there will be no football until June.

well pitch i am sure will be fine and the surrounding area with the donated heavy snow shovlers on Thursday and the first wave of volenteers too will make it easy on saturday for the other volenteers to finish the clear up. Let's hope we get a ref who is not a pussy for the inspecton Friday lunch time

... and -15 overnight, according to the BBC. The covers won't be enough to stop the pitch freezing if it really is that cold. Hope the forecast's wrong but I don't hold out much hope for the game if it's not. The covers were put down last Thursday. Since then we have had a -19C. So if the pitch passes tomorrow its stood a -19C. Keep the faith.

Just seen the report on T.V. from the ground with the supporters busy clearing the terracing and surrounds. Brilliant effort. I'm going to be more optomistic and say, yep, the game will be on.

A great effort by those involved.
One observation if the match is called off due to the approaches etc. Then it's a travesty.
In the run up to Christmas I have been to several supermarkets, plus visits up town and there is absolutely no concern for public safety at these places, in fact I would say that being in the stadium is a lot safer than trapesing around the Meole Retail park. The conditions under foot are awful yet it's not being cleared.
I saw a bloke and his missus today trying to push a trolley across a supermarket car park today, a bottle of baileys bounced out of the trolley straight onto a lump of snow, if it hadnt been covered in snow it would almost certainly have smashed.

Next crunch point comes at 12 today with the pitch inspection.
However, Graham Turner has stated that he forsees no problem with this particular inspection.

You heard it here first! I'm no Michael Fish but no way on earth the game will be on, don't know what weather service ShrewsWeb is using but haven't give it out to be any warmer at all! bbc.co.uk/weather Anything else to do on Boxing Day? (edited post title: let's not accidentally start rumours) I really hope you are proved wrong and you have to come on here and eat humble pie!

Temperature could drop to -8c on the night of 25th December.
So still some worries.
Boxing Day is however predicted to be +2c.
And no further snow forecast.

news.bbc.co.uk/weather/forecast/22?area=SY3There is snow on the evening of the game if you click on the arrow for Sunday, so hopefully it won't change to an earlier time. If the pitch has survived -19 then we shouldn't have a problem. - 18 tonight though.

It's not the -8 we need to worry about, more the -16/18 that the BBC weather site says we are in for tonight! However, like andygroundo said, the pitch has already withstood a -19 so presuming no circumstances have changed, all should be fine come Sunday morning!

The reality is that with temperatures so low even with covers the game has little chance of going ahead. The problem is that it will still be severely cold right up to kick off. So the fact is that when the covers are removed on the morning of the match the pitch will immediately start to freeze. By kick off the pitch will be like concrete. It may even be that the match is started but abandoned.

Bury's Home game against Torquay on Tuesday is already off as frozen pipes mean that neither the refreshment kiosks nor the toilets can function.
Possible problem for us too?
And what moron has paired Bury with Torquay on 28th December anyway? I preferred the system they had in place many years ago where you played your nearest team (usually Wrexham) on a home and away basis. However, nowadays the police would have apoplexy at so many local derbies taking place at the same time!
