Who would choose as the most overrated and most underrated Town players? For the most underrated player in my view has to go to Mark Stallard. Stallard was disliked my most fans but offered so much experience and know how up top. Martin O'Connor was the same, just to intellegent for the players around him. I'd argue Lewis Neal, but there wouldn't be much point with the boo boys out to get him. For me the most overrated, I'd go for either Ben Davies or Dave Hibbert. Two non existent players on the footbal pitch for me. Davies was an expensive luxury who dodged a tackle and was very inconsistent, take away his goals and he was nothing at SALOP. As for Hibbert how he's playing higher than Harrold is beyond me.

Underrated - Stewart Drummond (still to replace his goals from midfield, even now) Overrated - Jamie Tolley (Never had the ability or application when he was at Town.....I think he overrated himself more than we overrated him too!!)

Lewis Neal isn't a patch on our current 2 wingers. He could learn a thing or two about beating a man, hard work, and tracking back, from them.

Overrated - that clown Dave Edwards.
An injury-prone bottle job that routinely skied crosses into the Wakeman end, and yet was touted as the next Pele by sufferers of 'local lad' syndrome.

He's capped for Wales too has he not?
I always thought Pugh was underrated. Not saying that as he's at Bournemouth now but it was always my opinion.
I didn't see much of Humphrey but was surprised to see the reaction after he left. Would have probably played Pugh infront of him but like I say I never saw much of him.
For some reason at the time I thought Grant Holt was overrated (I'll recieve pelters for this) but in hindsight last season it dawned on me just what a player we had. Although I fully agreed the sale of him when we did - made a good profit and didn't risk the contract debacle again.
Marc Tierney seemed to slip under the radar a bit, doing well by all accounts at Colchester. Also thought Darren Moss should be playing higher than Morecambe with respect.

Hilbert definitely over rated IMO, will be interested to see how he does at Peteborough.
Under rated, would have to be Carl Griffiths.

That clown dave edwards who is playing in the premiership They've finally realised he's plop too! He can't even make the 18 man match day squad anymore. Wolves fans i have spoken to say he's a championship player, not good enough for prem. under-rated = Marc Wright, World Class signing for us! over-rated = Lewis Neal, can't understand everyone's hype about him, he's RUBBISH!

Hibbert and Langmead both overrated. Capable of a good game and have a great attitude but Langmead makes too many mistakes and Hibbert just not quite consistently good enough. Leslie is a bit overrated he just doesn't perform enough to warrant a contract.
Underrated: Herd and does anyone remember Mark Taylor? A very consistent midfielder who was with us in the 90's?

I love threads like this - it's what makes footy message boards such fun.
In the spirit of the posts so far - over rated must be Arthur Rowley, Peter Broadbent, and Joe Hart (couldn't even get in the England side in the summer the looser)
Underated - robbie turner, Stuart Nicholson and Patrick O'Toole

McIntyre is a very under-rated player IMO, also Sorvel when he was here.
As for over-rated Tolley springs to mind, along with Nicholson. What was the name of that striker from Hartlepool ex Boro, signed in about 2000 - 2001 he was supposed to be up there with Pele, think he only started about two games.

Underrated (in terms of contribution to the team rather than necessarily by fans...): Gary Hackett, Chris Withe, Dave Hockaday. Also thought that Jones fella who played CB a couple of years back was decent - he's fallen of the edge of the earth... Overrated: Ian Woan, Gary Patterson, Jamie Tolley, Lewis Neal, Cureton,

If we're talking from a time ago:
Under rated - I echo Mark Taylor (a very good creative central midfielder), - also Mark Blake (a £100,000 signing, but who later seemed to see Williams and Walton emerge, but who i always thought was quality) - Wayne Clarke (abslolute quality when he was here)
Over rated and bound to be controversial: - Dean Spink (a player who to me seemed to be nothing more than average yet was apparently one of our 'cult heroes' - Neil Lyne (always thought he was slow) - Austin Berkley (winger who often got the ball went forward to the opponents box, then who went all the way back to where he'd gone from with the ball)

I hero worshipped Dean Spink when I were a lad. Actually when ever I chatted to him in the players bar back at Gay Meadow I think i still worshipped him. And Neil Lyne! OK i'll let you have Neil Lyne! My overrated would be: Mark Atkins, Mark Taylor, Sam Aiston Underrated: Mark Blake, Gary Shaw, (Ray?) Woods, Richard Scott i was trying to think of names not mentioned yet.

Dont see how Davies is over-rated, he was fantastic for us when he was fit and he showed what a good player he is last season with Notts County. Most overrated players for me - Hibbert, Paul Murray, Langmead, Tolley. Underrated - Ben Herd, Kevin McIntyre, Leo Fortune-West , Mark Pugh.

Overated - Jamie Tolley, Mark Atkins and Ian Woan Underrated - Derek Asamoah Mark Atkins over-rated??? Yeah I remember all the fans ringing in to Radio Shropshire praising him and all the fans singing the songs about great he was. He was one of those players who does a necessary job but will never win praise. I know Crippen has an issue with Edwards and the local boy syndrome. I think that could apply to someone like Pete Wilding who is a top bloke but in my opinion was nowhere near good enough to play league football (even though he did have Rooney in his pocket!!). Would have to agree on Aiston being over-rated, the fans loved him for his ability to run at players and then get stuck in but too often there was no end product or normally some sort of reckless tackle (remember the Sc***horpe tackle). Would agree that Drummond was under-rated, and Tierney, was guilty of writing him off as a standard lower league left back but is doing well for himself.

Whilst I would never call Wilding over-rated, it said a lot about our squad in 2002-03 that he was our best player.
I was at the Man U-Newcastle game on Monday with a mate who supports Man U and I had a smug feeling when 72,000 or so people were chanting his name, knowing Wilding had him in his pocket in the Everton game!
