Whilst I would never call Wilding over-rated, it said a lot about our squad in 2002-03 that he was our best player. I was at the Man U-Newcastle game on Monday with a mate who supports Man U and I had a smug feeling when 72,000 or so people were chanting his name, knowing Wilding had him in his pocket in the Everton game! 72000 singing wildings name at Old Traffird! I knew he had a cult following but WOW

I'm confused by this thread.
Underrated surely means someone who was / is good but was generally held to be rubbish or ineffective.
I don't see how McGinlay can be 'underrated' as Town fans have been in almost unanimous agreement that he was our best striker of the past past twenty five years or so (before Holt signed anyway).
Similarly, how can Nicholson be held up as 'overrated' when the overwhelming consensus is that he was a pile of s**t?
Anyway my two
Overrated : Tolley - was tipped to be the club's first one million pound player. Thought he was on a par with Edwards. Now plays for Wrexham.
Underrated: Asamoah. The charge that he 'had no end product' is always levelled at him but he was our second top scorer in his one season with us and had his fair share of assists too. The manner in which he left the club probably accounts for the poor esteem in which he is now held.

Overrated - in terms of high expectations that were not met - I'd probably put Dungworth at, or near, the top of the list. No Name signing who exceeded all expectations - Nigel Pearson

Similarly, how can Nicholson be held up as 'overrated' when the overwhelming consensus is that he was a pile of s**t? Because he was even worse than that. There aren't really too many that seem generally under- or overrated. How can Ben Herd be underrated when nearly everyone loved him - and many still do!? David Hunt underrated, definitely, slipped under the radar. James Constable is overrated by quite a few. I would say Marc Pugh but there are as many unders as overs - sums him up really!

Underrated - I always felt that Dave Tong didn't get all the credit he deserved in the 79 side. Mark Taylor was very consistent player - rarely had a bad game for us.
Overated - Austin Berkley & Steve Anthrobus both described on here as legends in the past.

Certainly slipped under mine. Not a fan on the basis of his performances for us regardless of where he came from and where he plays now.

Overrated - that clown Dave Edwards. An injury-prone bottle job that routinely skied crosses into the Wakeman end, and yet was touted as the next Pele by sufferers of 'local lad' syndrome. That clown dave edwards who is playing in the premiership Seriously?

Some wierdly eccentric choices, for example how was Mark Taylor underrated when he was nicknamed Zico by the fans?
As a personal confession, I overrated Sam Aiston and thought that he would play at Championship level.
However, I never rated Tolley and was criticised on here for describing him as a 400 metre runner not a footballer. It was always clear to me that Dave Edwards was by far the better footballer.

Jemson was always given stick even when he was scoring. The shout for Stuart Drummond has being most under-rated is an excellent one.

Excellent stuff. Not sure what is more interesting, the views on the players or the interpretation of the term over/underrated!
Not at all surprised to see that various Town holding/defensive midfielders being quoted (Atkins, Taylor, Peer, McInytre etc). Always thought that some of our fans have never appreciated or fully understood that role.

Over-rated: not really sure, can't honestly think of too many. Tolley isn't a bad shout.
Under-rated: Pugh; Jemson based on the fact he used to get grief off half the crowd every game he played despite a decent scoring record in a poor team, yet Rodgers was no-where near as effective when he left; perhaps Fortune-West - a lot of people weren't too impressed by that particular signing, but he didn't half shut the doubters up in the end.
Also, not so much by Town fans in general, but on this particular messageboard I do feel Mark Atkins is over-rated by some. He maybe wasn't quite as awful as the Meadow crowd sometimes made out, but that still doesn't mean he was actually any good. I think a lot of the praise started as a devil's advocate backlash against all the abuse. The fact is he had a turning circle the size of the Bismark and he was CONSTANTLY run off the ball. There's a reason he'd been released by (then League 2) Hull, and don't forget how that team with him as the "brains" of our midfield actually finished up...........

Don't disagree with you entirely, Liam but I think he was injured for most of the disastrous 02/03 run-in. We didn't have anyone else to 'pull the strings' in midfield. AAAAGHH. I've just had a horrible flash back to the time Ratcliffe played him at centre half against Bristol Rovers and we lost 5-2!

I can only assume the people describing Dave Hunt as underrated are basing it on his career either side of his time here, as I can't remember him making any impact, aside from a few long throws (and even they were largely disappointing.)
Underrated- Martin O'Connor Overrated- Ben Herd- Undoubtedly a very nice guy, and a competent right back, but the way people were banging on about him last season as if he was the answer to all our problems bordered on the ridiculous.

Under rated.... Dave edwards. Class act. Ray Woods. Two good wingers in Brown and Woods, but Mickey is the legend, Ray mostly forgotten. Over rated...... Chris Humphreys, a sprinter who has a go at football. No end product, no understanding of the game.

OVERRATED Karl Murray and Jamie Tolley total garbage, both run like headless chickens. others include Matt Redmile how Chelsea once an interest in him Dean Peer could not play marbles never mind football. Any1 remember a player we used to call FORESKIN he was useless, played at right back in early 90s dont no his name. UNDERRATED Richard Scott in the mid 90s was class, as was Zicco who scored a cracker i remember against Leyton Orient on a Tuesday night towards the Wakeman end. Auzzie Berkley was entertainment and i will always remember his goals away at Cardiff on a Tuesday night 2 - 2 hell of a goal. My number1 is Tony Kelly, when Kelly hit it you knew it. Kelly's going to get ya.

Under rated.... Dave edwards. Class act.. Shock horror - Shrewsbury supporter from the sticks praises 'local lad' Dave Edwards. Dancin has got competition. Personally I thought he was very average. I can also remember the infamous 0-1 defeat to Wrexham at Gay Meadow in which the so-called 'local lad' barely had a kick. In fact, he was anonymous for the majority of that season and Peters was correct to leave him out at Wembley. What exactly was all the hype about? I will concede that he had a good engine and was a competent box-to-box midfielder on his day however he was also prone to injury and was abysmal at finishing. In addition to this he always came across as a thoroughly boring individual with the charisma of a damp rag.
