Taken off Shrewschat:
Oldham Athletic wanted to let fans in for free for the JPT game 2 weeks today. However, Town have rejected this suggestion as they would have been left out of pocket, fair point as we are entitled to a share of the gate.
However, I can sympathise with Latics who have 3 home gates in eight days. With the carling cup as well, it does make me wonder why we also have the JPT games sandwiched in at such an early stage of the season...in this current financial climate it just doesn't make sense.
However, it has now been suggested that the admission prices for the game be reduced to £5 for adults, £2 for pensioners and under-16s free. (It would normally be £20 on the day for adults).
Town are yet to confirm.
This sounds a good compromise to me...I'm sure if the roles were reversed we would do likewise.

I'd like to know exactly what our travel expenses are for this - can't be much. No overnight stay or owt like that to bump up the price, surely just a coach journey up?

Seems an odd one that: no free entry for the price of a return coach to Oldham.
On a more serious note: maybe we didn't want them with a decent following behind them?

Wouldn't we also have to pay for a meal somewhere for the players, appearance money and maybe there win bonus Not saying it shouldn't be cheaper though

if it was free - would you go?
WBA fans paid £49 to see them at Chelsea
It would be VERY interesting to see how many turned up if it was free.
If people want to go they will go.
I dont subscribe to this theory of going if it is £13 but not going if it is £15 - you DONT have to buy a programme, you DONT have to buy beer, if you live in Shrews then cycle there and dont pay for parking or fuel in the car. If someone wants to go, they will go.

I know the club will not say as it's a private business matter - but a ball park would be nice!

nothing to stop Oldham reducing the prices for their league games either side of the JPT tie is there? Don't see why we should lose income so that Oldham can get a big crowd?
A charge of £10 with 2000 attendance gives both sides £10k approx. Its a case of getting a sensible compromise, as it should also be with the Stoke game. If its £25 to go to Stoke, I'm not sure how many will bother and it would be a great shame. i hope the Town are not being stupid on this one.

If someone wants to go, they will go. Have to say I don't agree with you on this one. Comparing a team's first game of the season after promotion with a midweek First Round JPT tie is not exactly a fair comparision. I know there a lot of people on here who go to every away game, but as someone who goes to 5 or 6 in an average season I wouldn't normally bother with a JPT away tie. But if it was free to get in I'd definately go and support them, and I think a lot of other people would. You say "if people want to go they will go", which is true. But surely a venture like this is a). about rewarding the hardcore away following and b). enticing more supporters to go to an unnatractive midweek fixture? I don't know how many more would go, but I think it would be worth a try.

The famous game against Wycombe 2 years ago, both sets of supporters with season tickets were allowed in free. If they can agree once, why not this time?

Think Oldham have got the first PR punch in here leaving us looking like the mean guys. In reality, if Oldham were only thinking of their fans' finances they would have offered to pay our travel expenses wouldnt they surely.

If someone wants to go, they will go. Not sure what you mean. Its not about going if it were 13 notes rather than 15. They are suggesting free entry. And Oldham would have done this with thier own fans in mind, not Town fans... And what does it matter how many would go? Thats not the point here is it from Oldham. Its not a case of free entry to try and get as many fans as they can into the stadium, its about giving ther supporters a break because of the number of games at home they have about that time...which in turn woudl be the same for Town fans. And what matter is it how many Town fans go, the point is it would be free for those that would make the effort to go... I think you are missing the point here of what the aim is for Oldham...

I really dont understand Oldham on this one as they would have to pay for stewarding, electric and other cost so why they want to throw a chance to make a few quid? I can understand if the do charge £5 just to cover their own cost.

I really think Shrewsbury are well within their rights to hold out for the best deals for the club in both the upcoming cup games. Afterall how many businesess would throw away the chance of a few extra quid.

As the good chap from Notts says, if they want to help their supporters I am sure there are plenty of ways and opportunites to do so...

quite obviously an attempt by oldham to get more people in to buy all of the matchday parafinalia. if they thought they were going to make money charging an admission fee they would. so if we agreed to this, oldham would make money on consessions and we would make nothing.

If someone wants to go, they will go. What an awful analogy. £49 for WBA at Chelsea against a freebie in the Tin 'O Paint trophy? And of course a two quid difference in price (£13 against £15) won't make any difference to the vast majority of supporter's. You don't pay to get in BS you also don't have to consider multiplying that cost if you are taking family. Did you think about either of those before your response? I have already decided I won't pay more than £20 for Stoke. Especially with having Stockport on Saturday. You have to have a cut off somewhere, unless you are like Bizzy who lives and breathes STFC, but it should also be remembered he has no mortgage, no family to think about. I'm not knocking Bizz lad at all. I was exactly the same as him years ago. I went to every game home and away including Welsh Cup and even some reserve away games. But, I lived at home and was single. Things were different. I have to take into account bills to be paid and my wage doesn't go up just because I say to my boss: "Town have three away games this week boss, how about it?" So, in essence, I don't subscribe to your: "If people want to go they will go." Start a family, take them along and pay to get in then I will maybe treat your observations with a little more respect.

'Take Take Take'? Don't get that at all. On one hand we call for the club to 'maximise' our earning potential but then criticise when we do.
GT has has spoken about the importance of cup runs and the revenue it brings to the club. What's the point of earning away cup trips to bigger clubs if we don't gain finanically from it. The folks moaning here will be the same moaning in May next year if our playing budget is cut due to missed financial opportunities.
Cunning ploy by Oldham. Let go and knock them out!

By the way. I don't agree with free either as Town would lose out and there are still costs to be paid.
£5 would be a nice acceptable gesture though, especially with so many games at the moment.

I don't expect to watch professional sport for free and think that Oldham are indulging in some mischievous PR knowing that Town cannot agree to their proposal.
Not only would Oldham be taking money form their own fans in refreshment and programme sales etc, they would also be taking our money!

Totally cr@p at getting my point accross today - not intending to make people angry....... so Ive established fans 'in general' would / are willing to pay for a more prestigious game
BVS - I think it is disgraceful when some clubs, especially away ones charge crazy amount for kids.
In my opinion Kids should be a token gesture of say £1 with adults paying normal admission for games that are not sell outs - get bums on seats.
I'll put it another way - the faithful few will ALWAYS turn up - be it Conference or Championship. We have a fan base of about 10,000 of which each game 4,500 - 5,000 currently attend home games. What I was trying to get over was that if entrance was free, I don't think you would get a full house and another 10,000 locked out of the stadium. (exaggerating the example to make the point). And I also feel the total gate receipts would be far less if they charged £13 instead of £18 because there would not be the increase in numbers to make it financially viable and reach the break even figure.
