As a very concerned Southend Utd fan I was interested to see your league position and attendances this season since your drop last team. As we are about to suffer the same fate, what has your experience of the drop and the Conference been like?
The way our club has been in decline for the last seven seasons is heartbreaking and perhaps we need another relegation for us to sort it out and get our house in order. However, unfortunately I don't think we would survive relegation.

We have a supoerb fanbase, and luckily a board that is ambitious, however even though we have a better squad than last season we are allway facing teams that mark quickly and spoil our pattern of play, the conference is not all that bad a standard and are some tidy teams, but on the whole it is the most depressed i have felt in all my years of supporting STFC, we will make the play-offs, but the championship? not sure, we need to get the team firing on all cylinders first, we have only had 1 game this season where wqe totally dominated, the rest have been scrappy dull affairs, God i hate it here........

This first season is a bit of a novelty - different (mostly friendly) clubs to visit AND we're winning games for a change so it's not too bad - as long as we get straight back up - next year i imagine will be sh!te if we're still here. (and it's play offs at best for us I think whcih will be a bit of a lottery!!)
I did think it was the end of the world when we dropped out but so far so good, but don't want to be here next year!!!
The support has been magnificent and it's nice to be a 'big club' for a change as well instead of being little old Football league backwater Shrewsbury...

Let's just say for one season it's novelty.
Let's not make it the norm

For a start, you would probably draw a 10,000+ crowd for your derby against Canvey, if anything, crowds will increase as you're bound to win more games in the Conference than you would in D3, also there are at least eight Conference clubs in London and the south east so you will have many local away games, Dagenham away will also be a good derby for you.
The weirdest thing about playing in the Conference is probably playing in the FA Cup 4th qualifying round! Also you have the chance to play in the FA Trophy rather the League Cup, but which competition does you have more chance of winning?
At the moment I'm enjoying the atmosphere of the Conference, but I would like to get back into D3 asap before we get stuck here!

The Conference has only been partley bearable because we came down with our house in order and could thus make a realistic attempt (financially anyway) at buying our way back up.
If Southend are coming down in dissaray and need to get their house in order, then their short stop could easily turn into a hereford/Chester type stop.
Attendances have increased, partly due to the novalty but also due to what we were told at the begining od the season mixed in with some high profile signings and the high profile transfer rejection of our best player (s).

It's awful mate, I wouldn't wish it on anyone...
The FA Trophy is very, very strange...your really not too sure how your supposed to approach it. It's more a case of wanting to win to save embarrassment (say, loosing to Hucknall) rather than wanting to win the thing...
Anyhows, best of luck for the season our kid...hope you manage to stay up...

Like going to work just for the paycheque, except you have to pay to watch the stuff. I've hardly enjoyed a game this season.

we love the fact that we are a big fish in a small league, hence the arrogance.

Stupid question but why keep going if you don't enjoy it ? its not as though you are being forced to go? Not a stupid question at all bally. I am giving it a break, starting with last Saturday's game. The only games I am definitely going to this season is Morecambe away and next week's England game at the Bucks Head. Other than that it will be down to the ones the kids are interested in going to.

Stupid reply Telford Shrews for a change, if you don't enjoy something you don't do it i would of thought. Fair play to you Seanbroseley i went through a spell a few years ago and only went to certain games but started to miss it which i'm sure will be the same with you?

"Real fans follow there club whatever" So how many real fans would you say you have? as this year your crowds are up so some of these can't be real fans according to you Telford Shrew as they would of been there last year too.

Bally's looking for someone to over-react so he can say 'I told you so'. I don't think Telford Shrew's post is silly at all. Watching Town this season has, at times, been extremely frustrating and boring. Does it mean I'd stop going? Nope. Not at all. These days there is far much more to a day out at the football than just the football itself - although the result/ performance is the big factor in how you feel leaving the game.

Fair play to you Seanbroseley i went through a spell a few years ago and only went to certain games but started to miss it which i'm sure will be the same with you? No doubt. But until the kids start getting interested again I won't be going to too many games. What has pulled me up short and decided this for me is Jimmy Quinn's comments after the Accrington game. The game itself was bad enough - on top of all the others - but he then had a pop at the fans not once, not twice but three times. And I just thought, "why am I paying this ****wit's wages?" I work nearly 50 hours a week, week out. I'm studying for some professional qualifications and doing a little bit for the umbrella group. I would like to have a little bit of enjoyment in what little time is left.

Ant i can't see what i posted there that suggests i was looking for someone to overreact, according to Telford Shrew you go watching games no matter what, even though you don't enjoy going anymore. Why waste part of your life doing something you don't enjoy anymore whats the sense in that.

I feel I could write a 10,000 word essay on it, but I won't.
There are a number of contributing factors.
The fact that football is not just about the game itself but a day out, meeting new people, seeing your mates etc. etc.
Also the fact that even this season, with the standard of football as poor as it has been, there have been some bright points. Why risk missing them?
